Today's Top Stories. Watch a Spacecraft Punch an Asteroid Tonight. There's a Secret Organ in Your Head. How to Get Started With Welding. First of all yes, Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites are actually 11 films on this list. Trust me, it was Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites to whittle the sheer volume of poorly adapted comic book movies down to just these few, but I think you'll agree that these are Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites worst of the worst. If we missed your favorite bad film, please feel free to add your comments below. Maybe D. Unfortunately, even the last minute addition of Jeff Bridges as deceased wild west Marshal Roy Pulsipher bearded comedian Zach Galifianakis was originally slated for the role couldn't resuscitate this buddy-cop comedy meets supernatural thriller. Batman Forever The same cannot be said for Batman Foreverhis pretentiously named first foray into Batman mythology. Taking the reins from a disheartened Tim Burton, Schumacher immediately set about recreating the look and feel of the classic '60s show, replacing Michael Keaton with Val Kilmer as Batman, casting Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones as the interchangeable maniacs the Riddler and Two Face, and then decided to add Robin the Boy Wonder to an already overflowing mess of characters. While it was a hit at the box office, no one remembers Batman Forever and fewer still care. Blade: Trinity In addition to being the film the killed the popular Blade franchise, David S. Goyer's Blade: Trinity also holds the distinction of being one of the few American motion pictures to prominently feature the made-up Esperanto language. Whereas the first two films of this franchise took an obscure hero from the fringes of the Marvel universe and built a whole world around him, Blade: Trinity is relentless in its need to upend the status quo, offing beloved characters and introducing several new ones—including Ryan Reynolds' Hannibal King, Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites Parker Posey and Triple H as vamps—only to kill them just as needlessly. The odious icing on this inedible cake is a pretentious extra feature found on the Unrated DVD release in which Goyer the writer interviews Goyer the director via cheesy split screen, which is somehow even worse than it sounds. Barb Wire With Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites pin-up looks, platinum blonde tresses, and surgically enhanced assets, Pamela Anderson was once the living embodiment of a Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites, Unfortunately, her big-screen debut, Barb Wirewas a bust. Based on a short-lived comic series, the film saw its producers working with little source material besides a great title Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites a willing leading lady, so screenwriter Ilene Chaiken decided to rip off Casablanca and see if anyone would notice, with the titular Barb replacing Bogie and Temuera Morrison as her old flame. Film critic Roger Ebert famously called out Chaiken in his movie review but still, somehow, managed to give it two-and-a-half stars. Jonah Hex Jonah Hex, a disfigured bounty hunter and a stalwart of DC Comics Western line, is the last character you would expect to get a feature film. But after the successes of Blade and Ghost Riderthe studio gave this one the green light. Unfortunately, Jonah Hex also marked the live-action directorial debut of the veteran Pixar animator Jimmy Hayward. It's still unclear how he landed the job—perhaps it was the box-office success of his Dr. Seuss adaptation, Horton Hears a Who! This axiom proves even more true when one has to deal with notoriously temperamental ones like Josh Brolin and Megan Fox. The real question—for even diehard Jonah Hex fans—is, how can you understand what Brolin is saying under all that makeup? Catwoman After Batman ReturnsWarner Bros. Unfortunately, the first draft was turned in the same day that Batman Forever premiered, which ultimately doomed the project. After years in development hell with numerous actresses attached, Warner Bros. The resulting mess earned Berry a Razzie award for worst actress and cost Pitof his Hollywood career before it even began. The Spirit By now, the story of how Robert Rodriguez quit the Director's Guild of America over its refusal to grant a shared directing credit to Rodriguez and acclaimed comics author Frank Miller on 's Sin City has become the stuff of cinematic legend. That film, much like the comic it is based on, was an R-rated stylistic tour-de-force, and a box office hit Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites boot. The same can't be said for Miller's solo effort, The Spiritbased on Will Eisner's iconic creation. Miller aped much of the style and technique that was on display in Sin Citybut while that film contained dynamic and even daring performances from the likes of Mickey Rourke, Clive Owen, and Bruce Willis, The Spirit was on autopilot from frame one, with bizarre performances from Gabriel Macht, Samuel Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson. Perhaps the most baffling scene comes when The Spirit Macht wakes to find himself in a dentist's chair a la Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man before his arch-nemesis The Octopus Jackson appears in full SS regalia and waxes poetically about death. Howard the Duck When Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik introduced Howard the Duck in Marvel Comic's horror series Adventure into Fear inthey never could have imagined that their absurdist creation would find a fan in one of Hollywood's rising young stars. Following the breakout success of American Graffiti Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites, George Lucas discussed the possibility of adapting the cult comic book with his Graffiti co-writers and fellow USC film school alumni Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz. Lucas' attention turned to the Star Wars films, but inwhen he stepped down as president of Lucasfilm to focus Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites producing films, he paved the way for Huyck and Katz's ill-fated adaptation of one of comicdom's strangest characters. Many have cited Howard's drastic personality change from a rude, obnoxious, cigar-chomping drake found in the comics into a more downtrodden, put-upon everyduck in the film, as one reason why audiences and critics alike didn't respond to the movie. A more glaring problem may be the hypersexualized world that was created for Howard, down to the detailed, human-like nipples found Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites amply-endowed female duck's breasts, in a PG-rated film that couldn't decide if it was for kids or adults. Superman Returns Then came director Bryan Singer who, after bringing Marvel Comic's mutant heroes The X-Men to the big screen in two successful and critically acclaimed films, decided to jump ship and relaunch Superman instead. Singer decided that he would recognize Dick Donner's two Superman films as canon while ignoring everything that came after them, setting Superman Returns five years after the events that transpired in 's Superman II. Unfortunately, while Brandon Routh cut quite the figure as the Man of Steel, audiences were less than thrilled with some of the film's major plot developments, including Superman miraculously flying an entire mountain of kryptonite off into space, and perhaps the ultimate curveball from left field—that Superman fathered a child with Lois Lane and didn't even know it!? Ok, so I saved the best—or should I say worst—for last. With the sudden departure of wunderkind director Bryan Singer, Twentieth Century Fox was left high-and-dry for the third installment of their blockbuster X-Men superhero trilogy. Fox set a release date before actually signing acclaimed British director Matthew Vaughan, and Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites warned against rushing the film into production before abruptly bowing out due to personal matters and leaving Brett Ratner as his hastily hired replacement. Using Chris Claremont's seminal Dark Phoenix saga as the basis for the script, Fox and the Rat took a scorched Earth policy to characters and situations Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites in previous films, ensuring The Last Stand would be the end of the saga. With the shocking success of The Last Standand the underperformance of Superman Returns at the box-office, Fox was determined to right the ship that Singer seemingly scuttled, spinning off Hugh Jackman's popular Wolverine into his own film. X-Men Origins a prequel to the earlier X films, attempts to chronicle the character's mysterious past, beginning with his much-maligned origin story from the Marvel Comics and continuing until his time spent in the secret Weapon X program. Despite appearances by some familiar characters from the Film Noir. 100 All-Time Favorites U—including Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool—the film wasn't regarded highly by critics or fans alike, who spread bad word of mouth based largely on an early workprint uploaded online. • Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Adapted Screenplays
Absorbing the Worlds of Others: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala’s Adapted Screenplays By Laura Fryer Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of a PhD degree at De Montfort University, Leicester. Funded by Midlands 3 Cities and the Arts and Humanities Research Council. June 2020 i Abstract Despite being a prolific and well-decorated adapter and screenwriter, the screenplays of Ruth Prawer Jhabvala are largely overlooked in adaptation studies. This is likely, in part, because her life and career are characterised by the paradox of being an outsider on the inside: whether that be as a European writing in and about India, as a novelist in film or as a woman in industry. The aims of this thesis are threefold: to explore the reasons behind her neglect in criticism, to uncover her contributions to the film adaptations she worked on and to draw together the fields of screenwriting and adaptation studies. Surveying both existing academic studies in film history, screenwriting and adaptation in Chapter 1 -- as well as publicity materials in Chapter 2 -- reveals that screenwriting in general is on the periphery of considerations of film authorship. In Chapter 2, I employ Sandra Gilbert’s and Susan Gubar’s notions of ‘the madwoman in the attic’ and ‘the angel in the house’ to portrayals of screenwriters, arguing that Jhabvala purposely cultivates an impression of herself as the latter -- a submissive screenwriter, of no threat to patriarchal or directorial power -- to protect herself from any negative attention as the former. However, the archival materials examined in Chapter 3 which include screenplay drafts, reveal her to have made significant contributions to problem-solving, characterisation and tone.

Springer PAGES: 66 Adapting graphic novels requires new approaches in the theoretical models currently available to film theorists. Comic book films must be dissected beyond references to character, setting, plot, or story; analysis must consider the choice of plot and story within or outside a preexisting canon, the exclusion or inclusion of thematic elements, and the fidelity of visual narrative. The intertextual variability intensifies when considering comic book films and new methodologies are required for a proper examination of this genre. Using the works of comics scholars (McCloud, Eisner, and Ewert, et al), the studies of film theorists (Andrew, Wager, Ryan, Bordwell, et al) and graphic novels from highly regarded authors and artists (Miller, Moore, et al) new modes of adaptation emerge as specifically designed both for the comic book film and a greater understanding of visual narrative. iii Acknowledgements In the winter of my sophomore year of college I was told by a friend to read Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns.

Trisha Arlin A PRAYER ABOUT METAPHORS “Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech HaOlam, Blessed are you Lord, King Of The Universe” These are Blessed Metaphors For a hierarchy we have no use for, A patriarchy that excludes us And for a divine being we don’t believe in: So we reject them. Mazal Tov! Instead we look for our own metaphors: For a one-ness that unites, A presence that comforts, A mythology that instructs, A venue for all your questions, A chevre that gathers you in, A community that resists oppression, A tradition that stretches, A music that exalts, And prayers that are more than words. We feel this quest deeply, And it connects us, It’s not in belief It's in the Knowing. Blessed Knowledge, Whatever that is, We give thanks for this Place, Where we can look for our own metaphors And where we are invited to share them when found. Amen.
