LEZANT PARISH MAGAZINE ISSUE 103 JULY 2018 EDITOR: ROB PETCH TEL 01579 370151 This issue : JILL PRICE TEL 01579 370835 ADVERTISING & ACCOUNTS JILL PRICE Front cover photo: Cow and calf at Royal Cornwall Show 2018 by Shirley Ough Well, its me again! Rob is on a well deserved holiday and so I have “volunteered” to put together this month’s magazine. Rob will be back to do the next one for August/September. I’m sure lots of you will remember Val Bugden Cawsey who lived at Tregada for some years and was a Parish Councillor, member of Lezant WI and a founder (with Ruth and Veryan) of the Lunch Club. Val has been diagnosed with ad- vanced malignant melanoma but is determined to do something to help others who have had this devastating diagnosis. (Why am I not surprised? This is the Val we know—positive and courageous always.) She has organised a Walk on 1st July—all details are on page 33. Please come and support her in this event and help to raise funds for the current research at Derriford Hospital into this rare and aggressive cancer. Summer has really been with us for the last few weeks with a lot of dry weather and a good deal of sunshine too. Let’s hope that the events in the Parish for July are fortunate enough to have the sunshine. Two events at Trebullett Chapel this month— the blooming great tea party for Marie Curie and the annual Summer Sunday Lunch. See page 4 for details. The Horticultural Society’s Summer Garden competition is judged this month and we also look forward to that organisation’s big event of the year—the Annual Show. Janet’s reminder on page 8 should jog us into looking at the schedule and decid- ing what we can enter. A defibrillator has now been installed at Treburley Club and this will be unveiled on 29th July with a cream tea to follow. See page 32. Of course there are the usual monthly events as well as detailed on the diary page. Best wishes from your temporary editor Jill Price The Committee would be glad to receive any comments or suggestions you wish to make about the magazine, whether complimentary or otherwise. It is your magazine and we want to please as many of you as possible with the content. Contact Rob on [email protected] or 01579 370151 . Any potential adver- tisers are also welcome and should contact Jill at the telephone number on the cover. The views of the contributors are not necessarily those of the Editor or Magazine Committee and contributions are always welcome. RAINFALL FIGURES FOR MAY 2018 May 2018 40 mm 1½ inches May 2017 88 mm 3½ inches 2 3 TREBULLETT METHODIST CHURCH On 2nd June Julie Dinnis organised a Coffee and Cake Morning at Trebullett Hall in aid of Precious Lives (CHSW). This is her special charity and she is try- ing to raise £1000 for it. The morning was very successful—well attended with lots of delicious cakes and plenty of tea and coffee. Plus good company! A very enjoyable morning and £210 was raised towards Julie’s target of £1000. A report on our Strawberry Tea will follow in the next issue but, in the meantime, there are two more events for you to look forward to and both (as usual) include food! On Saturday 14th July Tabitha (our Chapel Secretary) is organising a Blooming Great Tea Party for Marie Curie and on Sunday 22nd July there is the Annual Trebullett Summer Sunday Lunch. Details of both are below and we look forward to seeing you there. TABITHA’S BLOOMING GREAT TEA PARTY FOR MARIE CURIE SATURDAY 14TH JULY 2018 TREBULLETT HALL FROM 2PM TO 5PM Please come along to enjoy tea and cake and support this wonderful charity TREBULLETT METHODIST CHURCH SUNDAY LUNCH 22ND JULY 2018 SERVED FROM 12.45 PM PRICE £10.00 per person FAMILY TICKET AT THE DOOR 4 LEZANT PARISH CHURCH Sadly the annual Cheese & Wine party in aid of the Churchyard had to be cancelled due to a change of date and therefore lack of advance publicity and support. It is not intended to hold the event later in the year but donations towards the Churchyard fund are always welcome and would go towards maintaining the graveyard and keep- ing the grass cut both at the Church and outside the Church Room. At the recent PCC meeting considerable discussion was given towards fund raising and whether to hold a Fete this year. It was decided that after the success of our Summer Supper last year at East Penrest, a similar event would be held in 2018 and every effort would be made to form a Fete Committee to hold a Fete in 2019. This would require finding a new venue as well as a team of volunteers. There is no requirement to be a Church member to be on the Fete Committee. We are just looking for people who support the Church and wish to see it continue to provide the community with its pre- sent level of services and pastoral care. Many of you will have noticed that the Church clock is now back in working order and striking again, although it does require one or two small tweaks to its new automatic system to make it completely accurate. A final sum of £3319 was raised to help pay for the clock repairs, which was a marvellous effort given the other demands on Church finances. We are delighted that we are now able to go ahead with the restoration of the lovely East window, which will require scaffolding to be erected for a week or two but hopefully will not cause much disruption to our services. Revd Heather and Robin will be on holiday in July from 8 th to 21 st . During that period if anyone requires the services of a Priest, please ring the Rectory on 01566 770649 and leave a message and you will be contacted by a Church member. MISSING! Tessa Baker is looking for her copy of the 1841 Lezant Parish Tithe Map. She wonders if anyone in the parish has it as she thinks she may have lent to somebody. If you have it, please either contact Tessa direct or if you don’t have her phone number or email address, contact Jill on 01579 370835 or at [email protected] 5 ADVERTISEMENTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS We always try to keep some space for your announcements and adverts! MRS MARY BENNETT Mary was born on 25th July 1927 to Thomas and Letitia, who ran the Sportsmans Arms pub in Treburley. She attended Trekenner Primary School and upon leaving, she helped to run the family pub and Cuddacombe Farm. She joined the Lezant WI and went on to marry Walter Bennett in 1968. The family sold the pub in 1971. They won a few awards for their garden at the Lezant Horticultural Show. The family continued to farm until retirement. Mary was a keen member of Treburley Social Club and enjoyed the monthly bingo and belonging to one of the skittles teams and taking a turn on the dance floor during their music evenings. She enjoyed and embraced village life and was a friend to many. She will be sadly missed. She died on the 5th May with her funeral being held at Lezant Parish Church on the 24th May. This was a very well attended event which paid tribute to the love and respect in which she was held by the commu- nity. Canon Richard Maynard conducted her funeral and she was laid to rest in the Churchyard. Mrs Mary Bennett MRS PHYLLIS ROBBINS Phyllis came with her husband Charles to Clamland, Trebullett, in 1977 and they en- joyed their life there. During that time they played host to the Launceston Area Art Group of which they were members and were often seen at parish events.
