LEZANT PARISH MAGAZINE

The Committee were concerned that without reports from the parish organisa- tions there wouldn’t be enough content to justify printing and distributing the magazine after this issue. However, we are determined to keep it going as long as possible as it is the main way of keeping residents advised of what is going on. Jo has lots of ideas of how to fill the pages but it would be really good if you would send us your contributions, some history of the parish, poems, reci- pes, whatever you think we can include. This will mean that we can continue from May onwards, perhaps with a thinner magazine but a magazine! Thanks to everyone for your support.

And, if you haven’t joined our Facebook page, please do so—search Lezant Par- ish Magazine on Facebook and click on Join. Jill, Jo, Pam and Rob

The result of the poll held on the 27th February asking if you want to use the Lezant Neighbourhood Plan to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area gained a very substantial YES.

There was a 37% turnout with 90.8% YES and 8.8% NO, (there was 1 spoilt paper). This means the plan is now in effect.

The Government’s 2011 Localism act was to enable communities to have a direct say and influence the development and growth of their local area. There are 137 towns and parishes in Cornwall working towards having a plan. There are now 38 which have a plan and we are one of these.

Thank you for voting.

LEZANT FLOWER AND GARDEN GROUP

February the 19th wasn’t the brightest or warmest of days for garden visiting, but 8 members braved the elements and set off to visit the garden of Jo and Tom Hynes near Winkleigh. We had visited in 2018 when the garden was in full summer bloom and decided we would return for Snowdrop and Cyclamen time. The couple have the National Cyclamen collection but as we went through the door to the garden, we were met by a woodland scene including Helle- bores, Hepatica, Daffodils and Camellias. Even in the dismal skies, the pol- larded lines of Willow glowed a burnt orange colour. Two greenhouses hold the more rare and tender plants and Jo told us how she inherited a collection of Cyclamen from a Dutch grower. They knew it would be a large number of plants so they took an articulated lorry across to collect the 600 plants which were all in terracotta pots and, of course and most important- ly, named. On reaching Customs, the Officers boarded the vehicle looking for illegal travellers but soon forgot this task when they saw all the plants!

The garden is easy to wander around; Jo and Tom are happy to wander with you and explain about the garden. They have over 400 varieties of Snowdrops. Jo also explained the mechanics of importing and exporting plants and the amount of paperwork involved. As with most of the gardens we visit, there are other features in the garden and seats to sit and just en- joy the scenery. Tea and cake was taken in the conservatory. The garden is well worth a visit and opens under the National Gardens Scheme. Jo said since they started opening in 2003, they have raised £30,000 for various charities.
