Then again, sometimes ideas just materialize out of the blue! Each February, as anyone who has been in Scouting for fi ve minutes knows, is our month to celebrate the anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America and for every Cub Scout pack in the United States (and beyond) to put on a spectacular Blue and Gold banquet. This past February 28, I had the opportunity to be a guest of Cub Scout Pack 3026 in Allegan. (Thank you Cubmaster Frank Andrews and leaders!) What a fantastic Blue and Gold program and an extremely well run Cub Scout Pack! Now, your question to me should be: “What are your criteria for making such a statement?” Well, I am glad you asked (you did ask, right? ). Here are the quality points I watched for: 1) Super cool invitation related to the Blue and Gold theme 2) Cub Scout greeters at the door 3) Well laid-out and colorful, themed items throughout (wall decorations, table centerpieces, etc.) 4) Reserved places or tables for guests 5) Well thought-out dinner or food service plan 6) Seating by dens with each parent having a table role to perform 7) Lots and lots of properly uniformed

Fire Bans and Cooking Requirement for Advancement A significant part of the country is currently under fire bans that prevent the use of open flames outdoors. Some of these bans have been in effect more than six months and are preventing Scouts from completing Tenderfoot requirement 3 and Second Class requirements 2e, 2f, and 2g. The National Advancement Committee has approved the substitution, during periods of fire bans only of the use of a cook stove or, when no outdoor cooking is allowed, completion of these requirements over a kitchen stove. Please appreciate the importance of these exceptions to Scouts and leaders currently working on these requirements. These substitutions are allowed only during periods of fire bans. Terry C. Through a generous financial gift Powder Horn Course made by Dr. Robert Skinner and the Skinner Family, in Sporting Clays Classic memory of Mrs. Raynell McLean Skinner, several POPCORN improvements to Camp Rockefeller’s existing Barrier-Free Popcorn Sales Campsite (Northpoint Campsite) were made possible. This Commissioner’s camping area is reserved for scouts and leaders with New Eagle Scouts physical disabilities, limitations, or special needs that could Bobcat Day prevent them from enjoying camp to its fullest extent. District News JOIN SCOUTING NIGHT SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 24, 2017 The Quapaw Area Council has designated Thurs- day, August 24 as “Join Scouting Night” in each of the 39 Central and Eastern Arkansas counties lo- cated throughout the council. As in years past the ultimate goal and purpose of “Join Scouting Night” is to “Give every age eligible boy the opportunity to join Scouting.” Nearly 600 hundred volunteers will assist in the planning, promotion, and execution of the most exciting Scouting event of the year.
