Study 06-13-21.Docx Sunday of the Fathers of the 1st Ecumenical Council The Church in Ephesus June 13, 2021 7th Sunday of Pascha Revision E Gospel: John 17:1-13 Epistle: Acts 20:16-18, 28-36 Today’s Gospel lesson is used in the West also today, the Seventh Sunday after Easter. Today’s Epistle lesson is used in some Western Churches on the 8th Sunday after Trinity (July). The theme of the last five Sundays has been the development of the Early Church. This continues by focusing on what the Twelve Apostles and their successors did to establish their churches on a correct doctrinal foundation. The Reading from John 17 speaks of Who Jesus is in relation to the Father. The Reading from Acts 20 addresses the Apostle Paul’s prophecy that people would come into the church in Ephesus after Paul left and challenge the statements in John 17. This was a major issue for the Church in the second half of the 1st century. The Gospel writer John, the son of Zebedee, spent the latter part of his life in and around Ephesus combating the heretics that Paul warned everyone about. The Fathers of the First Ecumenical Council did the same thing later on in the 4th Century. In the 1st century the leader of heretical opinions was the Arch-Heretic Simon Magus1, who tried to purchase the gift of the Holy Spirit from the Apostle Peter (Acts 8). He also claimed to be the Christ, stating that he only appeared to be crucified, but wasn’t really. As a master of illusions, he demonstrated his “powers” by bodily flying through the air, and by having plates and dishes fly through the air to serve him at dinner. He impressed some Christians so much that four of the original Seventy Apostles apostatized to follow him. He impressed Emperor Claudius and the Roman Senate so much that they commissioned a statue of Simon with the inscription: “To Simon, the Holy God”. Especially vocal regarding the heresies of Simon were Irenaeus of Lyons and Justin Martyr in the mid-2nd century, where the statue of Simon was still there. In the 4th century the leader of heretical opinions was the priest Arius of Alexandria, who claimed that Christ was not equal with the Father, but was some kind of a lesser god. Arius quoted the Scriptures very authoritatively taking statements that refer to Christ’s human nature and applying them as if they referred to His Deity. The Arians used force and bloodshed to suppress the voice of the Orthodox and they hounded and hunted down anyone who dissented with them. The Arians were blindsided at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, not expecting such a clear and powerful argument against them from the Scriptures, especially by Athanasius of Alexandria and others. Especially vocal against the Arians in the 4th century were Athanasius of Alexandria, John Chrysostom, Hilary of Poitiers and Ambrose of Milan. For example, the Arian heresy dealt with by the First Ecumenical Council claimed that Jesus was not really God but was a lesser being created by God. The heresies of the 1st Century, on the other hand, denied the Incarnation and claimed Jesus was not really a man. Today’s Gospel lesson can be used as a theological treatise to answer many of these mistaken beliefs. A brief outline of John 17, where Jesus was speaking to the Father is: 1. Glorify the Son (i.e. by crucifixion) that the Son may glorify the Father. The Father gave the Son authority over all flesh (John 17:1-2) 2. There is One God and Father, the only True God (John 17:3) 3. The Son glorified the Father on earth and finished the work He was given to do; i.e. Incarnation, Cross, etc. (John 17:4) 4. The Son will return to the glory He had with the Father before the world was (John 17:5, 13, 24) 5. The Father gave the Son the Twelve; the Twelve know the Father’s love for us (John 17:6) 6. The Twelve know that: 323 i. All the Son was given came from the Father (John 17:7) ii. The Son’s Words came from the Father (John 17:8, 14) iii. The Father sent the Son (John 17:8) iv. The Twelve are the Father’s (John 17:9, 20) v. The Son is glorified in them (John 17:10) 7. No one knows the Father but Christ (John 17:10, 25) 8. The Son asked the Father to keep the Twelve as one as the Father and the Son are one (John 17:11, 21-23, 26). The oneness in the Church parallels the oneness in the Trinity. 9. The Son kept the Twelve in the Father’s Name. None of the Twelve were lost except Judas (John 17:12) 10. The World hated the Twelve because they, like the Son, were not of the world (John 17:13- 16). Hilary offers an understanding of salvation in which Christ saves humanity by assuming every single person into his body in the incarnation. My dissertation contributes to scholarship on Hilary in two ways. First, I demonstrate that Hilary’s teaching concerning Christ’s assumption of all humanity is a unique development of Latin sources. Because of his understanding of Christ’s assumption of all humanity, Hilary, along with several Greek fathers, has been accused of heterodoxy resulting from Greek Platonic influence. I demonstrate that Hilary is not influenced by Platonism; rather, though his redemption model is unique among the early Latin fathers, he derives his theology from a combination of Latin-influenced biblical exegesis and classical Roman themes.

    HILARY OF POITIERS’ VIEW OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Joey Newton Hilary of Poitiers was a significant defender of Nicene orthodoxy in the fourth century. This article focuses on his contribution to the doctrine of the divinity of the Holy Spirit. What is particularly fascinating is that Hilary’s most profound contribution was made in a prayer rather than a lengthy argument as such. Hilary of Poitiers is generally recognized as the bridge between Western and Eastern Christianity in the development of Trinitarian theology during the fourth century.1 The ongoing controversy surrounding the creed of Nicea (325) that was kept alive by the tenacious defenders of Arian theology was the context in which Hilary formed his theology and wrote his key theological work, De Trinitate.2 Hilary’s purpose was to refute decisively the Arian teaching of Christ as a created being and the homoiousian teaching that Christ is not fully equal to the Father in his deity. The final section of De Trinitate (12.52–57) is a prayer that pulls together Hilary’s primary points concerning the relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This paper considers the final three sections of that prayer, paying special attention to Hilary’s understanding of the Spirit in relation to Father and Son and his work within believers, thus demonstrating that Hilary had a fuller sense of the Holy Spirit than is sometimes afforded him. 1 The various suggestions for his importance undergird the scope of his influence. Thanks to our pastor’s leadership ond our well equipped communications equipment and the skill of Pilip Muschke, we were able to be “on line` almost St. Jerome - Translator of Latin Vulgate instanetly. We missed only one session between our live class 4-5th Century and our first on line class. Today, we pick up the session we missed. We had covered two sessions of the three session Unit 2. The first of these sessions was on The Apostolic Fathers. These were those who had either known our Lord or known those who did. Among those would have been the former disciples of Jesus or the early first generation apostles. These were the primary sources to whom the ministry of our Lord was “handed off.” Saint Paul was among them.

Love is neither a verbal action, nor a sentiment, rather is a positive action of self-giving, and self- sacrificing on behalf of the beloved one! Accordingly our father, the blessed Peter who acknowledged God as the true Love, he loved men, suffering many troubles from both the inside and outside church for the sake of the salvation of his people. St. Peter was tortured because of the persecution that befell his children, first under Diocletian and, later, under Maximin Daia. He suffered death every day for the sake of Christ. His spirit was bitter for the schism of the church that occurred by Melitius of Lycopolis (Asyout). He was in agony because of the heresies, especially of the Arians who denied the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. He wrote to the emperor while he was in prison expecting his execution, not to flatter him, but to ask him not to submit to his own thoughts, as he gave himself over to the demons. Finally, when almost all the Alexandrian believers went out to prison to die for their Pope (Archbishop), he gave his life secretly, asking God that his blood would be the last that is shed in Egypt under the Roman rule. In the “Encomium1,” attributed to his disciple Pope Alexander of Alexandria, he was likened to the prophets, high-priests, apostles, and the evangelists: “O glorious, excellent one, you who were born as a consequence of a vow as was John the Baptist! O, you who were given as a gift from God like the prophet Samuel, being worthy like that one of the gift of prophecy and wondrous revelations from the time of your childhood! O you who were called to the high priesthood like the priest Aaron - or rather (you who) have been exalted above Aaron, for he was (a priest) figuratively, while you are one in truth.
