Hilary offers an understanding of salvation in which Christ saves humanity by assuming every single person into his body in the incarnation. My dissertation contributes to scholarship on Hilary in two ways. First, I demonstrate that Hilary’s teaching concerning Christ’s assumption of all humanity is a unique development of Latin sources. Because of his understanding of Christ’s assumption of all humanity, Hilary, along with several Greek fathers, has been accused of heterodoxy resulting from Greek Platonic influence. I demonstrate that Hilary is not influenced by Platonism; rather, though his redemption model is unique among the early Latin fathers, he derives his theology from a combination of Latin-influenced biblical exegesis and classical Roman themes.

    HILARY OF POITIERS’ VIEW OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Joey Newton Hilary of Poitiers was a significant defender of Nicene orthodoxy in the fourth century. This article focuses on his contribution to the doctrine of the divinity of the Holy Spirit. What is particularly fascinating is that Hilary’s most profound contribution was made in a prayer rather than a lengthy argument as such. Hilary of Poitiers is generally recognized as the bridge between Western and Eastern Christianity in the development of Trinitarian theology during the fourth century.1 The ongoing controversy surrounding the creed of Nicea (325) that was kept alive by the tenacious defenders of Arian theology was the context in which Hilary formed his theology and wrote his key theological work, De Trinitate.2 Hilary’s purpose was to refute decisively the Arian teaching of Christ as a created being and the homoiousian teaching that Christ is not fully equal to the Father in his deity. The final section of De Trinitate (12.52–57) is a prayer that pulls together Hilary’s primary points concerning the relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This paper considers the final three sections of that prayer, paying special attention to Hilary’s understanding of the Spirit in relation to Father and Son and his work within believers, thus demonstrating that Hilary had a fuller sense of the Holy Spirit than is sometimes afforded him. 1 The various suggestions for his importance undergird the scope of his influence.     Reflection Wednesday Week 1 St Hilary of Poitiers 2021 St Hilary of Poitiers was born at the beginning of the fourth century. He was elected Bishop of Poitiers in 350. He fought strongly against Arianism and was exiled by Emperor Constantius. His works are full of wisdom and learning, directed to the strengthening of the Catholic faith and the right interpretation of Scripture. He died in 367. He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1851. The alleluia verse states: “Let the message of Christ, in all its richness, find a home with you;” The message of Christ is not just about information or even teaching, it is meant to lead us into action. It was the motivating force behind the life and work of St Hilary even though it caused him to be exiled. Scripture will also motivate us into action if we give it the time and place in our prayer - like Jesus. One of the fears of Jesus which was also a motivating force, was he did not want to be made a king in the earthly sense which is why he moved from town to town. It was a healthy and beneficial fear and urged Jesus to preach and visit many different communities. His prayer also assured him that his Father was watching over him and as the psalmist suggests, God is true to his covenant, he keeps his promises, and inspired Jesus to do the same. H. WILLIAMS This essay challenges the criticism usually levelled at the early Fathers prior to Augustine for not articulating a view of justification by faith that corresponded with Pauline Christianity as reflected in the formulas of the sixteenth-century reformers. Not only is such a view anachronistic and tends to assume that there was (or is) a uniform definition of justification, but there is evidence that Latin theology before Augustine promulgated the tenets of unmerited grace and the necessity of righteousness that come only through justifying faith. In particular, the Matthew commentary of Hilary of Poitiers explicitly formulates a biblical theology of ‘fides sola iustificat’, and probably contributed to a revival of interest in the Pauline Epistles by the end of the fourth and early fifth centuries. t is still axiomatic for some Protestant writers that the principle of justification by faith was ‘discovered’ or ‘rediscovered’ by the I Reformers.1 This often implies that the important principles expounded by Paul about the truth of salvation were overlooked or misunderstood by most of the early and medieval Church until Luther, meaning that not until the sixteenth century was Paul’s teaching about the imputation of the righteousness of God to the sinner by faith properly interpreted and integrated into Christian history. Just as the notions of penance, tradition, sacraments etc. represented a series of corruptions from the simple and straightforward biblical message of the Church, so too the original apostolic intentions as expounded in Romans and Galatians became overlaid with an encrustation of alien teachings and practices sometime after the first century.

    TMSJ 20/2 (Fall 2009) 199-214 PENAL SUBSTITUTION IN CHURCH HISTORY Michael J. Vlach Assistant Professor of Theology Recently, at least since the eighteenth-century liberalism gained a place in Protestantism, the penal-substitution view of Christ’s atonement has come under attack. The claim that the doctrine was unknown in the ancient church has emerged along with the idea that such a teaching was invented by the Reformers. The fact that the first thousand years of ancient Christianity frequently espoused the teaching that Jesus suffered death, punishment, and a curse for fallen humanity as the penalty for human sin shows the falsity of such a claim. The fact that early Christians supported other views of the atonement did not exclude the possibility of their supporting penal substitution also. Other views of the atonement include the classic/ransom, the satisfaction, the moral influence, and the governmental theories. Without discussing penal substitution thoroughly, the following church fathers and writings expressed their support for the theory: Ignatius, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Epistle to Diognetus, Justin Martyr, Eusebius of Caesarea, Eusebius of Emesa, Hilary of Poitiers, Athanasius, Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Ambrose of Milan, John Chrysostom, Augustine of Hippo, Cyril of Alexandria, Severus of Antioch, and Oecumenius. Martin Luther wrote during the second Christian millennium, but he too endorsed penal substitution. Available writings show clearly that the early church supported a penal-substitution view of Christ’s death. * * * * * Since the rise of Protestant liberalism in the eighteenth century, it has become common for some to claim that penal substitution, the view that Christ died on behalf of sinners, is not a biblical doctrine.

    1207 SAINT AMBROSE OF MILAN (DECEMBER 7TH, 2020) Readings: Ephesians 3: 8 – 12; Ps. 88 (89): 1 – 4, 21, 22, 25, 27; John 10: 11 – 66. Ambrose was born in Trier about AD 340, the son oF the PreFect oF Gaul. He studied law and practised as a lawyer, and was appointed governor oF much oF Northern Italy, with his residence in Milan, the capital oF the Western Empire. In 374 Fighting broke out between diFFering Christian parties over the election oF a new bishop oF Milan. Ambrose – a declared Christian, but not yet baptized – made a speech urging the people to act in peace. While he was speaking a child’s voice was heard saying “Ambrose For Bishop!” The crowd took up the cry, and proclaimed him bishop oF Milan. The election was conFirmed by the bishops oF the province: within a week Ambrose was baptized and on 7th December he was consecrated as bishop. His way oF liFe changed at once. He gave his money to the poor and his lands to the Church, retaining only enough to support his sister. He turned his studies From the law to the scriptures and Fathers oF the Church, and became an eFFective writer and preacher. He lived a simple liFe, working hard in the service oF his people, any one oF whom could come to speak with him. He celebrated the mass every day and, with Saint Hilary oF Poitiers (13th January), was responsible For the introduction oF hymns into the liturgy in the Western Church. One oF the most inFluential events oF his liFe was his meeting with Augustine (later bishop oF Hippo: 28th August), who had gone to Milan to study philosophy.

    The Holy See BENEDICT XVI GENERAL AUDIENCE Saint Peter's Square Wednesday, 10 October 2007 Saint Hilary of Poitiers Dear Brothers and Sisters, Today, I would like to talk about a great Father of the Church of the West, St Hilary of Poitiers, one of the important Episcopal figures of the fourth century. In the controversy with the Arians, who considered Jesus the Son of God to be an excellent human creature but only human, Hilary devoted his whole life to defending faith in the divinity of Jesus Christ, Son of God and God as the Father who generated him from eternity. We have no reliable information on most of Hilary's life. Ancient sources say that he was born in Poitiers, probably in about the year 310 A.D. From a wealthy family, he received a solid literary education, which is clearly recognizable in his writings. It does not seem that he grew up in a Christian environment. He himself tells us of a quest for the truth which led him little by little to recognize God the Creator and the incarnate God who died to give us eternal life. Baptized in about 345, he was elected Bishop of his native city around 353-354. In the years that followed, Hilary wrote his first work, Commentary on St Matthew's Gospel. It is the oldest extant commentary in Latin on this Gospel. In 356, Hilary took part as a Bishop in the Synod of Béziers in the South of France, the "synod of false apostles", as he himself called it since the assembly was in the control of Philo-Arian Bishops who denied the divinity of Jesus Christ.
