FULOP MAYOR OF JERSEY CITY MAYOR OF JERSEY CITY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 18, 2016 CONTACT: Motivate/Citi Bike: Dani Simons, [email protected] Mayor’s Office Jersey City: Jennifer Morrill, [email protected] Mayor Fulop and Citi Bike JC Announce Bike Share System Expansion to Begin Locations unveiled for 15 New Stations JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop and officials from Citi Bike Jersey City announced today that expansion of the City’s successful bike share program will begin in mid-July with 15 additional bike share stations and 150 more bikes, bringing the system size to 50 stations and 500 bikes. The locations for the new stations were also announced. “The familiar blue Citi Bike has become a fixture on the city’s streets since last year’s launch as residents and commuters have found it to be a healthy, affordable, and sustainable alternative transportation option,” said Mayor Fulop. “Part of the commitment we made when we launched was that the service would be accessible and convenient for residents in every neighborhood across the city. Today’s expansion is part of that ongoing commitment.” Community input helped shape these locations, with over 500 suggestions received via an online portal. The City looked to add stations to the bike share network in high demand areas as well as in new neighborhoods to make the system a more accessible and attractive transportation option city-wide. Citi Bike Jersey City launched in September 2015 as the first bike share in New Jersey with 350 bikes at 35 stations providing a new, environmentally friendly, healthy and affordable 24/7 transportation option for Jersey City. The Fulop administration specifically sought a bike share system that would provide its members the ability to access Citi Bike in both JC and NYC – the largest bike share system in the nation – for only $14.95/month with an annual membership commitment. Riders have taken over 150,000 trips to date in Jersey City since launch. There are currently over 2,500 active Citi Bike members with Jersey City addresses. “It’s fantastic to see just how quickly Jersey City residents are taking to bike share,” said Jay Walder, President & CEO of Motivate. “We’re proud to help grow this great new piece of Jersey City’s transportation network.” (more) WWW.JERSEYCITYNJ.GOV (2) “Citi Bike Jersey City has been an even greater success than we imagined, and we continue to be thrilled to support it,” said Citi Head of U.S. Retail Banking Will Howle. “The expansion of the system this summer will make the program even more sustainable and convenient for residents and visitors alike. Thank you to Mayor Fulop and Motivate for helping to make Citi Bike Jersey City so successful.” “Goldman Sachs is proud to have invested in Citi Bike and excited to see the program expand to more neighborhoods that demand additional environmentally sustainable and affordable transit options,” said Margaret Anadu, Managing Director who leads the Urban Investment Group at Goldman Sachs. “The program is a true partnership between Motivate and the City of Jersey City that has a strong positive economic impact on the city, helping to revitalize neighborhoods and create quality jobs.” “The bike share program has been a great success and this expansion will give more Jersey City residents a way to pedal their way to better health,” said Minalkumar Patel, M.D., a Hudson County resident who grew up in Jersey City and Senior Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer for Horizon BCBSNJ, a founding sponsor. “We know that small changes, like taking a bike instead of a bus or driving, can make a big difference in the long run. Horizon is committed to helping people make those changes so they can lead healthier, longer lives.” “Mayor Fulop is well on his way to making Jersey City the best mid-sized city in America through his green initiatives such as the bike share program,” said Nadine Leslie, president of SUEZ North America, a founding sponsor of Citi Bike Jersey City. “A study that was recently published in the American Journal of Public Health reports observing cities show an increase in cycling and health benefits where bicycle sharing systems are run. SUEZ is proud to be a founding sponsor of the program and contribute to making Jersey City one of America’s most livable cities.” “CarePoint Health is excited to continue to be part of Jersey City Bike Share,” said Founding Sponsor CarePoint Health CEO Jeff Mandler. “Helping the people we serve lead healthier fuller lives is one of our core missions, and this expansion will continue to do just that.” “Having additional Citi Bike stations available throughout Jersey City will encourage more people to use bikes as a means of transportation. I am pleased to promote the Citi Bike program, and will continue to use the bikes and encourage others to do so,” said Joseph F. Scott, FACHE, President and CEO of Jersey City Medical Center, RWJBarnabas Health, a founding sponsor. Since 2013, Jersey City has added 22 new miles of bike lanes, supporting Jersey City’s development into an increasingly bike and pedestrian-friendly city.
