The end product of language perception, accessing meaning, is a result of complex computation in the human brain and presumably reflects analysis at, and transformation between, various levels of representation. In this thesis, MEG was used to characterize those representations at the neural level in adults and children. The special acoustic nature of speech was reflected in auditory cortical activation at 100 ms after sound presentation. In dyslexia, cortical organization of auditory processing, in general, was disrupted in this same time window (Study I). Meaning-based analysis of speech started at around 250 ms and was induced also by meaningless utterances, particularly when acoustic- phonetic or contextual cues predicted continuation as a word (Study IV). For complete spoken words, influence of sound form (phonology) appeared in neural activation within 250 ms, followed by neural signatures of semantic processing (Study V). Cortical activation to speech and print was similar in children and adults as regards location. However, activation sensitive to linguistic information was delayed and prolonged in children as compared with adults. Importantly, it was correlated with behavioral skills, indicating interdependence between maturing neural processes and developing linguistic skills (Studies II and III). In adults, conversion from letter to sound, an essential process in reading, engaged the superior temporal cortex. Activation increased with letter-string length, particularly with non-words (Study VI). This thesis provides new insights into the question of how mature and developing cortical circuits support the challenging but apparently effortless task of language perception and comprehension. ROBERT COLEMAN RICHARDSON June 26, 1937–February 19, 2013 Elected to the NAS, 1986 Robert C. Richardson was a highly skilled and accom- plished experimental physicist specializing in low- temperature phenomena. He earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics in the late 1950s at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and a Ph.D. in low-temperature physics at Duke University in 1966. At Cornell University in 1974 Richardson and his group discovered the antiferromag- netic phase transition of solid helium-3 at a temperature near 1 millikelvin (mK). Later, with his expertise in nuclear magnetic resonance and cryogenics, he pioneered studies of the transfer of nuclear magnetism between liquid helium-3 and the nuclei of fluorine atoms embedded in tiny fluorocarbon beads. He shared the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery, with his co-workers, of the By J. D. Reppy and D. M. Lee superfluid phases of liquid helium-3. Richardson was a dedicated teacher and was particularly remembered for his stimulating public lectures, complete with amusing demonstrations of low-temperature phenomena. Science policy was an area in which Richardson made substantial contributions, both at the university and national level. Robert Colman “Bob” Richardson was born in Washington, D.C., on June 26, 1937, and grew up in nearby Arlington, Virginia.

Like the Laureates, who have accepted the invitation to come and talk with Mecklenburg students, our bright young scientist will be inspired by the giants of science and by the wonders of the natural world. This shooting star will be steered in its trajectory by the encouragement and influence of family, the impact of war and other world events, by school experiences and probably by the powerful guidance and support of a mentor who is equipped and determined to discern the spark of brilliance and fan it into a flame of discovery. Those flames shine bright among our guests. By studying fruit-fly genes, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and her colleagues (Edward Lewis and Eric Wiechaus) helped us understand a critical step in early embryonic development that helps explain how birth defects happen. Douglas Osheroff, Robert Richardson and David Lee devised ingenious experiments at near-absolute-zero temperatures, revealing phase transitions that connect the micro- and macroscopic worlds. Edmond Fischer (with Edwin Krebs) spent years burrowing down into the complex chemical processes of the cell to isolate a fundamental step called reversible protein phosphorylation, which is crucial to medical challenges from cancer treatment to keeping the body from rejecting transplanted organs.
