We are pleased to present their work on vertebrate fossils found in Delaware, a subject that has not before been adequately investigated. Edward M. Lauginiger of Wilmington, Delaware teaches biology at Academy Park High School in Sharon Hill, Pennsyl vania. He is especially interested in fossils from the Cretaceous. Eugene F. Hartstein, also of Wilmington, is a chemical engineer with a particular interest in echinoderm and vertebrate fossils. Their combined efforts on this study total 13 years. They have pursued the subject in New Jersey, Maryland, and Texas as well as in Delaware. Both authors are members of the Mid-America Paleontology Society, the Delaware Valley Paleontology Society, and the Delaware Mineralogical Society. We believe that Messrs. Lauginiger and Hartstein have made a significant technical contribution that will be of interest to both professional and amateur paleontologists. Robert R. Hartstein INTRODUCTION In recent years there has been a renewed interest by both amateur and professional paleontologists in the rich upper Cretaceous exposures along the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, Delaware (Fig. 1). Large quantities of fossil material, mostly clams, oysters, and snails have been collected as a result of this activity. -

Holtz, Jr. ABSTRACT The giant theropod Spinosaurus was an unusual animal and highly derived in many ways, and interpretations of its ecology remain controversial. Recent papers have added considerable knowledge of the anatomy of the genus with the discovery of a new and much more complete specimen, but this has also brought new and dramatic interpretations of its ecology as a highly specialised semi-aquatic animal that actively pursued aquatic prey. Here we assess the arguments about the functional morphology of this animal and the available data on its ecology and possible habits in the light of these new finds. We conclude that based on the available data, the degree of adapta- tions for aquatic life are questionable, other interpretations for the tail fin and other fea- tures are supported (e.g., socio-sexual signalling), and the pursuit predation hypothesis for Spinosaurus as a “highly specialized aquatic predator” is not supported. In contrast, a ‘wading’ model for an animal that predominantly fished from shorelines or within shallow waters is not contradicted by any line of evidence and is well supported. Spinosaurus almost certainly fed primarily from the water and may have swum, but there is no evidence that it was a specialised aquatic pursuit predator. David W.E. Hone. AMERICAN MUSEUM NOVITATES Number 3954, 29 pp. June 16, 2020 A new genus of Late Cretaceous angel shark (Elasmobranchii; Squatinidae), with comments on squatinid phylogeny JOHN G. MAISEY,1 DANA J. EHRET,2 AND JOHN S.S. DENTON3 ABSTRACT Three-dimensional Late Cretaceous elasmobranch endoskeletal elements (including palato- quadrates, ceratohyals, braincase fragments, and a series of anterior vertebrae) are described from the Late Cretaceous University of Alabama Harrell Station Paleontological Site (HSPS), Dallas County, Alabama. The material is referred to the extant elasmobranch Family Squatinidae on the basis of several distinctive morphological features. It also exhibits features not shared by any modern or fossil Squatina species or the extinct Late Jurassic squatinid Pseudorhina. A new genus and species is erected, despite there being some uncertainty regarding potential synonymy with existing nominal species previously founded on isolated fossil teeth (curiously, no squatinid teeth have been docu- mented from the HSPS). A preliminary phylogenetic analysis suggests that the new genus falls on the squatinid stem, phylogenetically closer to Squatina than Pseudorhina. The craniovertebral articu- lation in the new genus exhibits features considered convergent with modern batomorphs (skates and rays), including absence of contact between the posterior basicranium and first vertebral cen- trum, and a notochordal canal which fails to reach the parachordal basicranium. Supporting evi- dence that similarities in the craniovertebral articulation of squatinoids and batomorphs are convergent rather than synapomorphic (as “hypnosqualeans”) is presented by an undescribed Early Jurassic batomorph, in which an occipital hemicentrum articulates with the first vertebral centrum as in all modern sharklike (selachimorph) elasmobranchs. Abstract: The Cal Orck’o tracksite is exposed in a quarry wall, approximately 4.4 km NW of Sucre (Department Chuquisaca, Bolivia) in the Altiplano/Cordillera Oriental, in the El Molino Formation (Middle Maastrichtian). Fossiliferous oolitic limestones, associated with large, freshwater stromatolites and nine levels of dinosaur tracks in the El Molino Formation document an open lacustrine environment. The main track-bearing level is almost vertical with a surface area of ~ 65,000 m2. The high-resolution mapping of the site from 1998 to 2015 revealed a total of 12,092 individual dinosaur tracks in 465 trackways. Nine different morphotypes of dinosaur tracks have been documented. Amongst them are several trackways of theropods, orni- thopods, ankylosaurs and sauropods, with the latter group accounting for 26% of the trackways. -

Mahmoud Department of Geology, Faculty of Science, Assiut University, Assiut 71516, Egypt Received 19June 2002; accepted 9May 2003 Abstract The palynofloras of the basal part of the Quseir Formation in the Bulaq area, central Egypt, are overwhelmingly of terrestrial origin. They are dominated by angiosperms (mainly Foveotricolpites and Arecipites). Pteridophytic spores are abundant, amongest which the Deltoidospora/Cyathidites association and Gabonisporis vigourouxii are the most frequent. Aquatic plants (e.g. Ariadna- esporites spores) and freshwater algae (e.g. Ovoidites and Pediastrum) occur in appreciable amounts. The association is indicative of a fluvio-lacustrine environment characterized by widespread moist and aquatic habitats under a warm-humid (tropical) palaeo- climate. An angiosperm-based dating as Campanian (most probably Early Campanian) is suggested. Proteacidites sp. 3 Lawal and Moullade and Syncolporites schrankii Awad are the most significant angiosperms, which are not known to range before the Campanian in the ‘‘Senonian Palmae Province’’ areas. The Bulaq assemblages bear a close relationship with the Palmae palynofloras of North Africa, but differ significantly from those of West Africa. Ó 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
