Accepted 11 May, 2012 Medicinal plants are considered to be the most hopeful way for cancer treatment. The Cichorium endivia, L. plant materials were collected from Tanuma, Saudi Arabia. Methanol extraction for the phenolic compounds was carried out and the HPLC analysis showed that, the extract containing four main compounds with different concentrations. The anticancer activity of the root extract was examined on breast cancer cell line MFC7 compared with the anticancer 5 FU (5-fluorouracil). Cytotoxicity of the root extract against the MFC7 line was 401ug/mL but it was 0.67 ug/mL with the 5 FU. The gene expression for the DNA cancer markers; P53, Bcl2, TNF and interleukin IL-4, IL-6 and IL-2 were examined using real time PCR. The expression of the P53 and TNF was high both in cells treated with FU and root extract. Expression of Bcl2 was high in the cell line treated with root extract compared with the FU, yet this expression still was low compared with the control ones. The expression level of IL-2, IL-4 decreased in the examined cell lines treated with both root extract and with 5FU as well. -

Data on 1,477 Syrphid occurrences and floral associations from three years of pollinator collection (2017-2019) in the Southern Illinois region of Illinois, United States, are here compiled and analyzed. We collected 69 species in 36 genera off of the flowers of 157 plant species. While a richness of 69 species is greater than most other families of flower-visiting insects in our region, a species accumulation curve and regional species pool estimators suggest that at least 33 species are yet uncollected. -

Abstract:There is a great interest in the production of biologically active substances from plant origin in today's world. Since chicory roots serve as the major source of valuable secondary metabolites, the aim of this study was to develop an efficient protocol for the in vitro root culture of chicory. Medium supplemented with 0.5mg/l NAA and 1mg/l IBA was found to respond maximum with 91% (leaf), 76% (hypocotyl) and 94% (root) for root induction. The maximum biomass accumulation obtained from leaf, hypocotyl and root derived adventitious culture (4.098g, 3.163g and 4.500g respectively) was obtained on the medium contained 0.5mg/l NAA and 0.8mg/l IBA. While a significant increase in rooting response percentage was recorded for leaf (17%), hypocotyl (15%) and root (8%) cultured on half-strength MS medium compared to that cultured on full-strength MS medium, there was no significant differences recorded for the accumulation of root biomass. There was stimulatory effect of total dark condition on root induction and production in all types of explants. A maximum amount of fresh root biomass (9fold) was produced 6 weeks after culture. Moreover, further analysis showed that inulin obtained from our protocol is closely similar to that obtained from open field cultivation in terms of quality and quantity. -

Box 437, Shefa Amr 20200, Israel Accepted 23 August 2002 Abstract An extensive ethnopharmacological survey was conducted among the most well known Arabic indigenous herbal practitioners in Israel, the Golan Heights and the West Bank in order to evaluate the potential of local plants used in treating different diseases and illnesses. Thirty-one indigenous practitioners’ of Arabic traditional medicine ranging in age from 40 to 116 years, were interviewed using a previously prepared questionnaire. The current survey revealed that 129 plant species are still in use in Arabic traditional medicine for the treatments of various diseases. Among these plants, there are 40 species used for treating skin diseases, 27 species for treating kidney and urinary system, 26 species for treating diabetes, 23 species for treating digestive system including stomach and intestinal pain and inflammation, 22 species for treating liver diseases, 16 species for treating respiratory system and coughing, 13 species for treating forms of cancer and nine species for treating weight loss and cholestrol reduction. [email protected] Abstract: The present study was carried out during 2010 to 2011 to determine the important plants of in Jarjar oma in Al- Jabal Al- Akhdar-Libya, which includes about 179 species belonging to 51 families and 144 genera. They are represented by 75 perennial, 101 annual and 3 biennial species. Most characteristic families are Asteraceae containing 28 species, the dominance of Asteraceae indicates the range deterioration and dominance of unpalatable species. Fabaceae represented by 22 species, Poaceae including 18 species, Asparagaceae by 7 species, Brassicaceae by 6 species, Caryophyllaceae by 6 species, Euphorbiaceae by 6 species saline and rocky. Apiaceae, Lamiaceae and Polygonaceae including 5 species. Noticed that 56.2 % of species was annuals and 42.1 % was perennials and 1.7 % was biennials. Whereas autumn and summer increase perennials to reach 100 % more than spring and winter wherein increase annuals species to attain 55 %, to display disappear biennial in autumn and summer seasons in all habitat except rocky habitat in autumn. Out of the surveyed, Kinds of Forbs gave 109 species followed shrubs by 38 species, Grass 26 species, Trees 6 species. Of the most dominant species was broad-leaved (Forbs) plant species found in the region. According to palatability 107 species were palatable and 72 species were unpalatable. For annuals, 61 species were palatable and 40 species were unpalatable, while perennial, 44 species were palatable and 31 species were unpalatable. -
