Endemic Land Snail Fauna (Mollusca) on a Remote Peninsula in the Ogasawara Archipelago, Northwestern Pacific1 Satoshi Chiba2,3, Angus Davison,4 and Hideaki Mori3 Abstract: Historically, the Ogasawara Archipelago harbored more than 90 na- tive land snail species, 90% of which were endemic. Unfortunately, about 40% of the species have already gone extinct across the entire archipelago. On Haha- jima, the second-largest island and the one on which the greatest number of species was recorded, more than 50% of species are thought to have been lost. We report here the results of a recent survey of the snails of a remote peninsula, Higashizaki, on the eastern coast of Hahajima. Although the peninsula is small (@0.3 km2) and only part is covered by forest (<0.1 km2), we found 12 land snail species, all of which are endemic to Ogasawara. Among these species, five had been thought to already be extinct on Hahajima, including Ogasawarana yoshi- warana and Hirasea acutissima. Of the former, there has been no record since its original description in 1902. Except for the much larger island of Anijima and the main part of Hahajima, no single region on the Ogasawara Archipelago maintains as great a number of native land snail species. It is probable that the land snail fauna of the Higashizaki Peninsula is exceptionally well preserved be- cause of a lack of anthropogenic disturbance and introduced species. In some circumstances, even an extremely small area can be an important and effective refuge for threatened land snail faunas. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT – The coast of the Western Australian Kimberley boasts an archipelago that comprises several hundred large islands and thousands much smaller. While the non–marine gastropod fauna of the Kimberley mainland has been surveyed to some extent, the fauna of these islands had never been comprehensively surveyed and only anecdotal and unsystematic data on species occurrences have been available. During the Western Australian Department of Environment and Conservation’s Kimberley Island Survey, 2008–2010, 22 of the largest islands were surveyed. Altogether, 17 species of terrestrial non–camaenid snails were found on these islands. This corresponds to about 75% of all terrestrial, non–camaenid gastropods known from the entire Kimberley region. In addition, four species of pulmonate freshwater snails were found to occur on one or more of four of these islands. Individual islands harbour up to 15, with an average of eight, species each. Species diversity was found to be higher in the wetter parts of the region. -

This summary has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. It highlights important elements of the biodiversity of the region in two ways: • Listing species which may be significant for management because they are found only in the region, mainly in the region, or they have a conservation status such as endangered or vulnerable. • Comparing the region to other parts of Australia in terms of the composition and distribution of its species, to suggest components of its biodiversity which may be nationally significant. The summary was produced using the Australian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. Abstract The endemic Macaronesian Canaridiscus, provisionally placed in the Discidae genus Atlantica, are closely linked to the peculiar laurel forest habitat of these islands. Knowledge of Atlantica (Canaridiscus) is increased here with the descrip- tion, for the first time, of the genital system of three more of its species. The epiphallus is apparently lacking and the penis is much longer than that known from any of the Discidae of Europe and North America; generally it is too large to be more than partly accommodated in the distal female genital tract. Keraea has been regarded as an endemic Macaronesian genus of Discidae known only from a few shells, but its Madeiran species has been identified as a Trochulus (Hygromiidae) and its type species (from Tenerife) also matches Hygromiidae, not Discidae. The origin and relationships of the Macaronesian Discidae are discussed. The simplest explanatory model is apparently that they represent the last living relicts of a more diverse fauna of Discidae that lived in Europe during the Tertiary; Atlantica (Canaridiscus) was probably isolated early on from the remaining Discidae. -

Of these ESTs, we have identified four partial fragments of N. samarangae cytochrome oxydase I (NsCO-I) gene which lead to obtain an 852 bp partial cDNA. Since NsCO-I is one of the best-known molecular phylogenetic markers, we have attempted to conduct comparative in silico analysis by using the NsCO-I gene. The combined results from BLAST analyses, multiple sequence alignment and molecular phylogenetic study of NsCO-I cDNA indicate that N. samarangae has similarity to three land snails such as Elona quimperiana, Euhadra herklotsi and Euhadra idzumonis. ABSTRACT Seven species of terrestrial Gastropoda are newly described from the island of São Tomé and six more from the island of Príncipe. The genera involved are Chondrocyclus (Cyclophoridae), Maizania and Thomeomaizania (Maizaniidae), Pseudoveronicella (Veronicellidae), Nothapalus (Achatinidae: subfamily undet.), Gulella and Streptostele (Streptaxidae), Truncatellina (Truncatellinidae), Afroconulus (Euconulidae), Principicochlea gen. nov., Principotrochoidea gen. nov., Thomithapsia gen. nov. and Thomitrochoidea gen. nov. (Urocyclidae). Most of these are from natural forest habitats and are likely to be single- island endemics. Apothapsia gen. nov. (Helicarionidae) is also described to accommodate two previously known species. Additional new island records are of ten species on São Tomé, one on Príncipe alone and two more on both islands. These include six species of "microgastropods" with wider ranges in tropical Africa that are likely to be hitherto overlooked parts of the indigenous fauna and six anthropogenic introductions; Pseudopeas crossei previously known only from Príncipe and Bioko is newly recorded on São Tomé. -
