The article develops a life-grounded alternative critique of globalization that roots our ethical duties towards each other in consciousness of our shared needs and capabilities. -

These changes range from the establishment of a common currency to the introduction of a European citizenship, from new family structures to new ways of working, all this while Europe is enlarging and acting in a global context. Research can play a constructive role in understanding those changes, identifying opportunities and risks, assessing the feasibility, acceptability and impacts of different policy options. Such constructive role however can only be played if research enters in sustained dialogue with those who are at the same time potential users of research, actors of change, and holders of important forms of practical knowledge. In other words, research should not only aim at ‘communicating its results’ to the people ‘outside’ the research system, but should also ‘listen to and learn from’ the experience and concerns of the various social actors or- as it is often said- the various ‘stakeholders’. The ‘dialogue workshops’ series organised within the Key Action ‘Improving the socio-economic knowledge base’ intends therefore to improve multidirectional communication –as opposed to unidirectional diffusion of information- in relation to a number of different but related issues and functions. -

Each of these public goods presents global challenges and potential remedies to promote economic development. Without these goods, developing countries are unable to compete, prosper or attract capital from abroad. The undersupply of these goods may affect prospects for economic development, threatening global economic stability, peace and prosperity. The need for public goods provision is also recognized by the Millennium Development Goals, internationally agreed goals and targets for knowledge, health, governance and environmental public goods. Because of the characteristics of public goods, leaving their provision to market forces will result in their under provision with respect to socially desirable levels. Coordinated social actions are therefore necessary to mobilize collective response in line with socially desirable objectives and with areas of comparative advantage and value added. International public goods for development will grow in importance over the coming decades as globalization intensifi es. Corrective policies hinge on the goods’ properties. There is no single prescription; rather, different kinds of international public goods require different kinds of policies and institutional arrangements. The Report addresses the nature of these policies and institutions using the modern principles of collective action. Parts of this paper are drawn from Helleiner 2014. I am grateful to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada for helping to fund this research. Susan Strange is well known for her interventions into discussions about the trajectory of US hegemony. At a time when scholars fiercely debated the consequences of declining US hegemony, she questioned the underlying assumption being made. Scholars across the theoretical spectrum, she argued, failed to recognize the enduring nature of the US power, particularly in its structural form. She argued that scholars of international political economy often neglected the significance of structural power which she defined as “the power to shape and determine the structures of the global political economy within which other states, their political institutions, their economic enterprises, and (not least) their scientists and other professional people have to operate.”1 Strange was particularly keen to highlight the importance of enduring US structural power in the global financial arena where she argued that outcomes continued to be influenced by the unmatched ability of the US to control and shape the environment within which others operated.2 Strange’s concept of structural power has been sometimes criticized for its lack of precision.3 How is structural power exercised and over whom? What are its sources? What can it accomplish? These kinds of analytical questions were not always addressed in great detail in Strange’s writings. -

People who are impoverished are especially vulnerable to exploitation by traffickers. Fair Trade workers are paid a living wage so that their children don’t have to work to support their family and can attend school instead. Profits from Fair Trade ventures are reinvested into the community with Fair Trade Funds that address social, economic, and environmental challenges in each community. Through a democratic system, each Fair Trade community determines how their funds will be used. Funds can be reinvested into their business, directed to empowering women, supporting education, protecting the environment, fighting poverty and providing health care. In addition, Fair Trade certification guarantees that no child or forced labor was used in the production of goods. In particular, there is a risk that internationalization efforts may contribute to the reproduction of harmful historical and ongoing global patterns of educational engagement. In this paper we explore these issues by offering a social cartography of four possible articulations of internationalization, and considering their relation to an often-unacknowledged global imaginary, which presumes a colonial hierarchy of humanity. We also address the practical and pedagogical possibilities and limitations of enacting each articulation within mainstream institutional settings, and propose that social cartographies offer a means of reframing and deepening engagement with the complexities, tensions, and paradoxes involved in internationalizing higher education. -

Montana Model UN High School Conference General Assembly Second Committee Topic 2: Free Trade vs. Fair Trade with Developing Countries 1 1 October 2016 There are two basic approaches to international trade. The first approach, free trade , is the idea that government intervention and protectionist methods such as tariffs and import controls should be limited, allowing prices to be set by supply and demand and, therefore, to be as low as possible. The second approach, fair trade , is the idea that free market prices fail to provide for worker security in countries where labor is in abundance and wages are often inadequate to support workers’ most basic needs. Fair trade advocates argue that prices should be set to take such situations into account. The emphasis in free trade then, is on low prices, while the emphasis in fair trade is on fair prices. Those in favor of free trade argue that states should take several actions to reduce protectionism. First, states should reduce or eliminate tariffs (also known as customs duties), which are taxes on imports. 2 An example of a tariff is the US tariff on imported steel from China, which was set at 265.79% in March of 2016 to protect the US steel industry from the low prices that were accompanying a large “influx of foreign steel.” 3 Second, reducing protectionism calls for limiting subsidies. Subsidies are the financial assistance paid to support domestic businesses to make them artificially competitive against imports. In the European Union (EU) for example, domestic wheat farmers are being paid $200 per ton of wheat; however, outside of the EU, wheat can be purchased at $150 per ton, showing that EU farmers are being subsidized by $50 per ton.
