1 MessageMessage FromFrom thethe SchoolSchool HeadHead It was an unexpected email, and I wasn’t even sure it was legitimate. A video production company in Montreal had discovered Maharishi School and wanted to visit our campus for an international series about “Schools Like No Other." Last fall they arrived and filmed our students, and the show aired across canda this winter. “A School Like No Other” is an accurate description of Maharishi School just from our achievements this school year: •6 state champion teams in Destination Imagination (33 partici pants) and four Top 20 places at the Global Finals •Three outstanding groups performing at the All-State Speech Festival •Southeast Superconference Champions in Quiz Bowl •Southeast Iowa Superconference Art Show: 1st Place in Drawing, 1st Place in Photography, and 1st Place in the Judges Award •A top score at the Iowa High School Music Association piano competition •Regional and State Science Fair Grand Champions at both Junior and Senior levels, and a trip to the INTEL International Science Fair in L.A. •Another National Merit Scholar with perfect 800’s on SAT writing and reading portions, with a 720 in math •Seniors accepted at 36 colleges and universities from coast to coast •The boys tennis team’s state record 10th straight Final Four appearance, competing for sin gles, doubles, and team championships Where else are students earning this range of accolades while investing in rest, taking time to tran- scend twice a day? The difference at Maharishi School is depth: •Depth of consciousness through our practice of the Transcendental Meditation program; •Depth of knowledge with the unifying Science of Creative Intelligence, and •Depth of relationships in our caring, multicultural community Visitors from all over the world comment on the extraordinary atmosphere of calm, kindness, and cre- ativity, and they want to replicate this model of Consciousness-Based education in their communities and countries. Thank you for your role in creating and supporting “A School Like No Other” pictured in this 2014 Yearbook. The School Council is responsible for the daily administration of the School. It is comprised of the School Head, Directors of Lower, Girls, and Boys Schools, and other ad- ministrative leaders. They work in collabora- tion to provide holistic guidance of our academic programs, finances, personnel, physical plant, and expansion programs.

Senior Class of 2014!

40 Class of 2 0 1 4Senior Trip to L.A.

41 We touched down in L.A. at eleven local time, yawning from our early start that morning. We stumbled out of the airport and into our vans, then drove up to Santa Monica to get to our hostel and, more importantly, our lunch. That hostel would serve as our base for the next week and a half, bringing us within walking distance of dozens of delicious restaurants, unique stores, and—best of all— the beach. Our first official stop was the Samillas charter school dedicated to the Aztec culture. There we had the honor of witnessing their spring ceremony, featuring traditional drums, dance, and dress. Then their student council joined us for a walk, and over the course of that stroll our two groups melded into one. The girls then visited a second school, the New Village Girls Academy for at-risk girls, where TM has turned the school and the students’ lives around. We experienced the versatility of TM as it enriched spiritual tra- dition at Samillas and built better futures at New Village. The next day we had lunch with local alumni, and the legendary David Lynch joined us at the end of the meal. We invited him to speak at our graduation, but we were surprised to learn that he hates public speaking—as he was quick to tell us. We also visited the more conventional tourism sites such as Univer- sal Studios. There we took pictures with costumed characters, e.g., SpongeBob, Dracula, and Shrek, and we went on attractions like the Transformers roller coaster and a tour of the film studios. We drove up to the Getty Villa, a beautiful marble manor housing a collection of Greek and Roman artifacts. There we got a tour from an in- credible tour guide who loved his work and wanted to instill that same love in us. Instead of the dry museum talk we expected, he spoke very little and instead had us create stories inspired by the pieces. The Griffith Observatory was our next destination, and from its vista we had a fantastic view of the famous Hollywood sign—not to mention the clear blue sky. In- side the observatory we saw unique exhibits including a functioning seismograph and a lens from which we could see sunspots in real time. We attended a stand-up comedy show at Upright Citizens’ Brigade, and Mickey sat in the front row to see if the comedians would heckle him. He got his wish— three of the comedians made fun of him, much to everyone’s delight. We capped off our trip with a Medieval Times dinner and show, where actors in the arena drew us into a tale of intrigue through feats of horsemanship, fal- coning, and hand-to-hand combat. Our Red Knight won his first joust, but he lost the next to the Green Knight. Fortunately, that knight went on to defeat a barbarian warrior from the neighboring kingdom in a grand finale that had us all on our feet. We closed out our last day with a bond formed by cheering our hearts out together, the satisfaction of seeing good defeat evil, and very hoarse voices. We arrived in L.A. with empty stomachs and open minds, and that was the only thing about us that hadn’t changed when we left a week later. Our fundraising paid off a hundredfold in the end, as our shared experiences brought us together like nothing else we could have imagined. Our week in that sun-bleached city was the perfect way to end our high school career and our senior year in style. 42

3D modeling develops spatial reasoning, which is basically the ability to manipulate forms and shapes and visualize them in one's mind. We did several short modeling projects: cars, castles, coffee cups, and we finished by modeling the White House.

51 Science Fair Bimba Shrestha, 11th grade, and Pranav Chhayillil, 7th grade, each won the grand prize in the senior and junior divi- sions at the Eastern Iowa Science and En- gineering Fair (EISEF) in Cedar Rapids. This is the first time Maharishi School stu- dents have won the competition at both levels. The wins earn them a free trip to Los Angeles to compete at the Intel Inter- national Science and Engineering Fair in May.

Pranav Chhayillil’s research, entitled The Effect of Brushing on Oral Bacterial Count Analyzed Using Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) Method, was de- signed with the intention of bringing “aware- ness about the importance of brushing quality on oral hygiene to prevent many deadly diseases and enjoy good health.”

Bimba’s research, entitled Save Real Objects as a File, focused on designing affordable 3D scanning technology. He explains, “I looked for ways to bring real objects into the digital world while using the least amount of resources.” “First, a normal digital camera takes a video of the object while it rests on a rotating platform. To the side of the camera is mounted a line laser that will shine on the object at a known angle. After one rotation is complete, a computer program that I wrote using Java will export the video from the camera, cut the video into hundreds of frames, and using the known angle will detect where the laser line falls on each frame to create what is known as point cloud. Once the point cloud is created, it can be used to generate a 3D mesh, something that most 3D software can support. At this point, the object will have been successfully scanned, and will be available for printing or modifications.”

DTP created your yearbook. We used Photoshop for im- ages and QuarkXpress for layout. Each student had to learn to use the software. Then we designed our template and the changes for each section. Everybody did at least one year- book page.

54 Cooking Elective

Cooking Through the Seasons

Why is what we eat important? Why do so many memories and holidays grow up around food? In the cooking elective, we’ll explore these questions while learning essential cooking techniques in the context of multi-cultural recipes and our favorite comfort foods. Guest chefs will teach their signature dishes and share their secrets. Students will also participate in harvesting vegetables, shopping for ingredients, and deciding what they’d like to learn to cook.

76 Ron Perry Court Dedication

Andrew, Tegan, and Amanda Perry

Ron Perry (1950-2013) was a teacher, Coach, DI helper, and role model. Ron and his wife Evangeline dedicated many years to our School. Ron’s student athletes com- ment that he was “generous,” “always put- ting others first.” They loved his term for them: Gym Rat. “He was always positive, definitely generous.” “Compassionate. The weekend game after he died, we all wore black tape on our shoes in memory, in tribute to him.” He also always bought his players pizza. “He was kind. Whenever I think of him, he was smiling. He taught me generosity.” Evangeline Perry (1951- 2003) taught in the original yellow preschool building, and later assisted kindergarten, and maintained the mathematics lab, helped DI, and retooled the School’s website. Ron and Evangeline set up Evangeline’s Nature Walk on the School grounds. We love and miss them both.
