Under the direction of Alana Waksman and brendan Thomas, six out of nine entries from Maharishi School were recog- nized at the All-State festival. only the top performances from each of the State-level competitions receive such an honor. Two Maharishi School pieces received special recognition at the All-State Festival and four pieces were performed. At the end of the day, each critic from each respective category chooses his or her favorite performance of the day, thus awarding the Critic’s Choice Award to that performance and school and entrusting them with the ban- ner to hang in their school for one year. This year, Maharishi School’s group mime, “The Adventures of Miss Power and the Amazing Violet Velocity In: Dial ‘H’ for Hero!” has received the Critic’s Choice Award. This deems the mime, in the eyes of the judge, the best group mime of 2009 in the state of Iowa. The mime was developed by the performers and the coaches, brendan Thomas and Alana Waksman. Sophomores Minna Mohammadi and Pearl Sawhney swept the top prizes at the eastern Iowa Science and engineering fair (eISef), the State Science and Technology fair of Iowa (SSTfI), the Iowa Junior Academy of Science (IJAS), and have placed in the top 30 presenters at the Intel International Science and engineering fair in San Jose, CA. The students have also been invited to compete at the national environmental Science fair, and the American Junior Acad- emy of Science fair in Washington D.C. in february, 2011.

Raph Burne upheld his winning record and won Honorable Mention for his poster presentation at the national Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) in bethesda, MD. “The event was outstanding, a fantastic experience,” said burne. “I toured Johns Hopkins Applied Physics lab and met with civilian and military sci- entists. The discussions, friendships, and contacts made were invaluable.” burne’s project, entitled “Sustainable Insulation and Conservation: Keep- ing Heat In and Sound out,” used recycled car tires mixed with recycled paper to create an effective heat and sound insulation. “Improving energy efficiency in buildings shrinks heating bills and reduces the consumption of fossil fuels, helping us become more carbon neutral,” burne reasoned. “As an added benefit, this results in a quieter environment inside the building.”

STATE RoBoTICS CHAMPIonSHIP A team of six Maharishi School students (pictured from left to right) Vegard Joergenson, Sam Arsanjani, Dominic Borg, Jaren Fleishman, Atreya Dey, and Shuna Kaasa, won the Iowa Robotics championship, competing against 17 other teams from across Iowa, as well as three out- of-state teams. The competition is part of the fIRST Robotics Competition, which is sponsored by fIRST (for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 by Segway inventor Dean Kamen to encourage student team-building skills, entrepreneurship, and “Gracious professionalism.” The competition entailed seeing whose robot would perform best in a ball-tossing game called Hotshot.
