Professional Physical Education Licensure Program - Oregon State

Physical Education offers one option leading to licensure in all four levels of authorization: Early Childhood (Age 3-Grade 4); Elementary (Grades 3-8); Middle (Grades 5-10); High (Grades 7-12). may opt to pursue licensure while earning a Master of Science degree or as a post-baccalaureate or special graduate . Admission is competitive for the program. Licensure students may opt to earn an Adapted Physical Education Endorsement concurrent to the Initial Licensure program.

Admission requirements 1) Documentation of successful experiences working with children and youth in school physical education settings and subject matter based on pre-requisite courses and/or experiences. 2) Passing scores on a Basic Skills (CBEST or PPST) is required for consideration of admission. 3) PRAXIS II: Content Specialty Exams required for admission & licensure include: Physical Education Content Knowledge (Praxis 0091), Physical Education: Movement Forms-Analysis and Design (Praxis 0092), and Physical Education: Movement Forms-Video Evaluation (Praxis 0093). Those admitted must have passing scores by the beginning of Fall Courses. 4) Passing scores on the Civil Rights for Educators Exam are required by the beginning of Fall Courses. 5) Additional graduate school admission requirements of a 3.0 in last 90 quarter hours apply for those choosing to pursue an M. S. degree.

The PETE program is housed in the College of and Human Sciences. The 54 hour program includes 24 credit hours of course work taught by Physical Education Faculty in Nutrition and Exercise Sciences (NES), 9 credit hours of coursework taught by other NES faculty, and 21 credit hours of internship experiences in public supervised by Physical Education Teacher Education Faculty.

Teacher Preparation Program: Physical Education

Prerequisite B.S. in physical education; physical education content competencies; public school physical Courses education practicum experiences (elementary and middle/high); successful experiences with & Experiences diverse populations including individuals with disabilities; lifespan human development, education foundation core & required exams listed above.

Initial I License Admission to the professional program. A cohort program over Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring; culminates with recommendation for Initial I License; includes work toward Master of Science degree. Completion of licensure requirements & Master’s Degree may be concurrent. Masters Degree Completion of required coursework along with final oral examination.

Continuing Completion of master’s degree including a final oral examination, three years of successful License teaching, and three three-credit courses focusing on professional development beyond the MS-PETE program results in recommendation for the Oregon Continuing License.

Initial Licensure Total 54 cr.

Teacher Standards and Practices Commission changed the Continuing License to optional in 2005. If you choose to earn the Continuing License you must teach for 3 years and complete 9 additional graduate credits after your initial licensure has been granted (EXSS 599 Portfolio Development for Advanced in Physical Education, plus two EXSS 5XX course selected in consultation with your advisor (APE or Workshop credit for NW Children’s Conference).
