Imagined Identity and Cross-Cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE Tien-Yi Chao National Taiwan University
ISSN: 2519-1268 Issue 9 (Summer 2019), pp. 59-87 DOI: 10.6667/interface.9.2019.86 Russia/Russians on Ice: Imagined Identity and Cross-cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE tien-yi chao National Taiwan University Abstract Yuri!!! on ICE (2016; 2017) is a Japanese TV anime featuring multinational figure skaters com- peting in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The three protagonists, including two Russian skaters Victor Nikiforov, and Yuri Purisetsuki (Юрий Плисецкий), and one Japanese skater Yuri Katsuki (勝生勇利), engage in extensive cross-cultural discourses. This paper aims to explore the ways in which Russian cultures, life style, and people are ‘glocalised’ in the anime, not only for the Japanese audience but also for fans around the world. It is followed by a brief study of Russian fans’ response to YOI’s display of Russian memes and Taiwanese YOI fan books relating to Russia and Russians in YOI. My reading of the above materials suggests that the imagined Russian identity in both the official anime production and the fan works can be regarded as an intriguing case of cross-cultural communication and cultural hybridisation. Purple Passion and the Press: an Analysis of Front Page Coverage in Selected U.S
Purple Passion and the Press: An analysis of front page coverage in selected U.S. dailies of the death of Prince Rogers Nelson Ernest L. Wiggins University of South Carolina School of Journalism and Mass Communications Popular Culture in the South & American Culture in the South Nashville, Tennessee Oct. 13-15, 2016 The sudden death of Prince Rogers Nelson on April 21 inspired American newspapers to create front pages that not only marked the musician’s cultural significance as an innovative songwriter and performer but reflected his unique style and sensibility. For this paper, I analyzed the display of news stories announcing his death on the front pages of a dozen U.S. daily newspapers for April 22 and found an abundance of purple, the performer’s signature color, in both graphic presentation and in prose and other treatment that reflected the diminutive musician’s outsized persona. When Prince died on April 21 at the age of 57, the media used language like “legendary,” “iconic,” “innovative,” “genius,” “controversial,” and “prolific” to describe the performer.* His career, which spanned the 40 years from 1976 to 2016, was marked by high productivity (39 releases and nearly yearly national and international touring), fierce creative independence (he waged war against Warner Bros. and other industry giants for control of his music), genre-busting (his songs incorporated R&B, rock, electronica, dance music, jazz and pop) and gender-bending (he presented a highly sexualized, androgynous public persona). At 57, Prince was a familiar and enormously popular part of the musical history of the Baby Boomer generation – many of whom were writing, editing and designing newspapers across the country. -
Skating World Mourns Loss of 'Visionary' Billings
Skating world mourns loss of 'visionary' Billings Hamilton, Buttle among those who treasured time working with designer Posted 9/29/16 by Sarah S. Brannen, special to icenetwork Jef Billings, seen here posing with one of his Emmy Award-winning designs, left an indelible mark on the world of figure skating. -Getty Images Designer Jef Billings, who created costumes for skating stars for decades, died Tuesday at the age of 70. Billings was widely regarded as one of the most important designers in figure skating, creating opulent pieces drawn from his experience creating fashion in Hollywood. "His knack was to dive into the character that you were portraying on the ice and really bring out the flavor of that in the costume," said Kristi Yamaguchi, a frequent client of Billings. "Whether it was something comedic and fun, or elegant and glamorous, you put a Jef Billings on and it made you feel special on the ice." Scott Hamilton met Billings in 1984, when Billings showed him some sketches backstage at a tour stop. Hamilton liked his energy and enthusiasm, and the two started working together, forming a partnership that lasted decades. "There was no one like him," Hamilton said. "There are a lot of really talented people out there, but when you look at his technical ability of understanding fabric -- how to cut, how to sew, how to build and create something to make a perfect picture -- he just got it. He wanted women to look gorgeous; he wanted men to look like men. He wanted the skaters to represent whatever the character of the piece was, and he was just brilliant." Billings, who died at his home in Los Angeles on Sept. -
