    Reflections From The Pastor One of the most beloved and familiar images for God in the Bible is that of a shepherd. THE VIEWPOINT It is an image that we reflect upon each year at this time as the post-Easter lectionary THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF RIVERSIDE COMMUNITY CHURCH readings point us towards our shepherd-like God. (This year’s readings: Psalm 23 & John 10:11-18.) United Church of Christ But what do we really know about shepherd and sheep? Have you ever cared for sheep? May 2012 I haven’t. In fact, as an urban dweller for much of my life I have rarely even been near one. So, I have been doing some research. And what I have found makes me stand in awe and wonder that anyone would ever want to be a shepherd, let alone God. I also squirm with discomfort at the thought that I might be viewed as a sheep. For sheep, I have learned, are high maintenance creatures. They require constant attention and meticulous care. They are prone to get lost or stuck in brambles and they are fearful and Spring Fling timid—even the sudden appearance of a small dog can cause them to run. They are also impatient—if a flock is being led to clean, cool water they are prone to stop and drink from muddy pools along the way—unable to wait or envision something better.     ADAM ALEXANDER Race Announcer, NASCAR XFINITY SERIES Co-Host, NASCAR RACE HUB Adam Alexander, a member of the FOX Sports family since 2006, serves as the play-by-play announcer for FOX NASCAR’s NASCAR XFINITY SERIES coverage, a position to which he was assigned in FOX’s inaugural season covering the series (2015). He also co-hosts NASCAR RACE HUB, FS1’s daily NASCAR news and information program, a role he assumed in September 2013, and plays a significant role in network hosting coverage of FOX NASCAR races. Alexander handled play-by-play for FS1 in the NASCAR GANDER OUTDOORS TRUCK SERIES for the 2014 and 2015 seasons and served in the same capacity for TNT’s coverage of the MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES for five years (2010-’14). The versatile broadcaster was an integral part of SPEED’s motor sports coverage for years, hosting SPEED CENTER (2011-’13), NASCAR LIVE (2012-’13) and NASCAR IN A HURRY (2008-’10), as well as co-hosting NASCAR RACE HUB and SPEED CENTER in 2010.     82 APRIL 2018 APRIL 2018 83 “ A bird-brained movie to cheer the hearts of the far right wing,” sneered Vincent Canby in the 25 July 1974 edition of The New York Times. The movie he was reviewing was Death Wish, a new crime thriller directed by Michael Winner, in which Winner’s frequent cohort, Charles Bronson, embarked on a vigilante crusade in New York, incited by the murder of his wife and rape of his daughter. And Canby wasn’t alone in his disdain. Variety called it “a poisonous incitement to do-it- yourself law enforcement”. Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times thought its message was “scary”. But Death Wish was unstoppable. In the US, the $3 million movie grossed $22 million and was followed by four sequels, two now infamous for their extreme sexual violence. The fnal one, 1994’s Death Wish V: The Face Of Death, was Bronson’s fnal big-screen role. Even without him, the series refused to die, as the fact there’s a new remake incoming attests. It has, however, taken time to arrive. In 2006, it was announced that Sylvester Stallone would star in and direct a new Death Wish; when he left the project, Joe Carnahan (The A-Team) took over. That version languished in development hell too, and is only now circling the roles of Benjamin and police making it to the screen, directed by Eli DEATHWISH (1974) chief Frank Ochoa. But time went on, Roth from Carnahan’s script and starring It could all have been very different.
