In his NASCAR career Tony won three Sprint Cup Championships. He also won an IndyCar championship, and is the only driver in racing history to be crowned champion in both those series. Tony is retiring from Sprint Cup racing as a driver, but as an owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, we’re sure we’ll see him at NASCAR tracks for years to come. We’re honored to have been Tony’s safety equipment supplier for his entire NASCAR career. And we thank him for being a shining, winning example that safer is faster. SAFER IS FASTER. 5 HELMETS // SIMPSON 2017 PERFORMANCE CATALOG /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// SNELL 2015 RACING HELMETS Snell SA rating is the most widely accepted standard for racing helmet safety in the world. SA 2015 RATED The Snell standard is updated once every five years, generally improving helmet protection each time. Effective October 1, 2015, helmet manufacturers began selling Snell 2015 rated helmets, meeting Snell’s latest and most stringent safety standards. The helmets are clearly marked with the Snell 2015 safety label. AN OVERVIEW OF THE IMPROVEMENTS TO THE SA2015 STANDARD VERSUS THE SA2010 STANDARD IS EXPLAINED HERE. SA2015 helmets are equipped with FIA 8858-2010 compliant M6 terminal mounts for head restraints. Head restraints such as the widely used HANS and Hybrid styles have been credited as being the number one lifesaving advance in personal racing safety equipment of the last 20 years. SA2015 includes provisions for Low Velocity impact testing. For the racer, this test ensures performance in low velocity crashes. A single helmet is tested in five separate sites on a flat anvil on or above the helmet’s test line. No impact may exceed 200G and the average of the five peaks must not exceed 180G. SA2015 includes Low Lateral impacts at the intersection of the head form reference and transverse planes. This is the key area around the ear and temple. The peak G criteria for helmets tested on head forms of less than 60 cm circumference (ISO A-J) has been raised to 300 G and the velocity of the first impact has been increased to 8.5 m/sec. Second impact velocities have been reduced. The peak G criterion for the ISO M head form remains at 264 G but the first impact velocity has been increased to 8.0 m/sec. The second impact velocity has been reduced. SA2015 certification will require two more helmet samples than SA2010 demanded. One of these is for the FHR testing and the other for the additional impact tests. Generally racers wear what is required by their sanctioning bodies. Each sanctioning body establishes which standards it will accept and how old the rating can be. Be sure to keep up with your sanctioning body and local track requirements. This subject was substituted by the author for a more traditional academic subject after a chance discussion with a speaker after a research class that was part of the Masters in Liberal Studies in American Culture program. It is in part a historical project, but it attempts to be a history that attempts to connect developments in the sport to broader themes in the study of American culture. This thesis focuses primarily on three institutions. Waterford Hills Road Racing is a club, founded in 1958 eight near Clarkston Michigan in the shadow of the capitol of the American automobile industry (The track is about two miles away from Chrysler’s headquarters). Waterford dates back almost to the beginning of the modem sport in the early nineteen fifties and in its history has reflected developments in the sport itself. Grattan Raceway in Belding Michigan is a family business.

  • Enhancing the Fabrication of Motorsports Gear in Sri
02nd International Conference on Apparel Textiles and Fashion Design ENHANCING THE FABRICATION OF MOTORSPORTS GEAR IN SRI LANKA 1Kaumadha Wickramarchchci, 2Rivini Mataraarachchi. 1 [email protected] , 2 [email protected] ABSTRACT Motorsports has become a universal sport. Many researchers have discussed about the fitness levels of racecar drivers. But none has given an in depth guide into the problems that are faced by drivers in the perspective of Sri Lanka. Motorsports was introduced to Sri Lanka during 30s from that day onwards the interest among the people for this has increased significantly. The focus of this study is on Sri Lankan motorsport apparel. It discusses the problems faced by Sri Lankan racers to comply with international sport and safety standards when it comes to choosing racing gear, which is affordable as well as, comfortable. The study further explores the possibility of locally manufacturing racing gear to cater to an increasingly growing enthusiasm for motorsport in Sri Lanka. Through a review of literature, the report looks at various fabrics that are internationally developed for competitive racing to discern modern standards and trends. The empirical data is gathered through in-depth interviews with key informants from the local motorsport arena to analyze issues faced by them with regard to their safety and comfort when selecting racing gear. Solutions for enhancing the fabrication of the gear while minimizing the problems faced. Through a SWOT analysis the study finds that it would be possible to locally produce affordable motorsport gear within reasonable parameters. Keywords: Motorsports, safety, comfort, affordable, enhancing, fabrication.
