The lead characters are intended to be the most over-the-top parody of beer-guzzling, not-that-bright Canadian bumpkins. The other characters are too one-dimensional to be viewed as positive role models. Comedic slapstick violence. Joke referencing prison rape. Bullets are placed up the nostrils of one of the lead characters to stop his bloody nose while in a courtroom; when he sneezes, the bullets are fired and ricochet around the room. A car chase culminates in the lead characters' van losing control and falling into a lake, where they are presumed dead. Characters shoot dart guns. Hockey violence. Kung fu violence. My left nut! Beer is the center of the McKenzie Brothers' lives. Jokes about driving drunk. Cigarette smoking. Parents and caregivers: Set limits for violence and more with Plus. As the title implies, beer plays a big part in this movie. In one scene, they even fill their dog's water dish with beer. The brothers call each other names like "hoser," "hosehead," and "knob"-- these and catchphrases such as "Take off, eh! Join now. Add your rating. This leads Bob and Doug to Strange Brew Brewery, where the owner of the brewery has recently died Strange Brew mysterious circumstances, and the late brewer's wife married the brewer's brother immediately after the funeral. There's a deceptive brilliance to this goofy movie. Sure, there's plenty of slapstick humor, memorable catchphrases such as "Take off, hoser! And the bad guy in the midst of all this silliness is Max von Sydow -- best known for playing extremely solemn characters in Ingmar Bergman films. The Strange Brew characters themselves, Bob and Doug McKenzie, were created as a deliberate mockery of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's demand for more "Canadian content" on SCTV a must-watch for all students of comedy, sketch comedy writers, and improv enthusiasts. For many children of the s, the jokes and one-liners in Strange Brew are as memorable as anything in Caddyshack and This is Spinal Tap. Families can talk about stereotyping. Strange Brew Movie Review Loosely based on elements of Shakespeare 's Hamletmost of the film was shot in TorontoScarboroughStrange Brew and Hamilton, Ontario. Parts were also filmed in Prince George, British Columbia. Two unemployed brothers, Bob and Doug McKenzie Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas Strange Brew, place a live mouse in Strange Brew beer bottle in an attempt to blackmail the local beer store into giving them free Elsinore beer, but are told to take up the matter with management at the Elsinore brewery. The brothers are given jobs on the bottling Strange Brew inspecting for mice in the bottles. Meanwhile, the evil Brewmeister Smith Max von Sydow is perfecting a secret plan to take over the world by placing a mind-control drug in Elsinore Strange Brew which, while rendering the consumer docile, also makes Strange Brew or her attack others Strange Brew certain musical tones are played. Smith tests this adulterated beer on patients of the neighbouring Royal Canadian Institute for the Mentally Insane, which is connected to the brewery by tunnels. Bob and Doug learn that the brewery's former owner, John Elsinore, has recently died under mysterious circumstances and his daughter Pam Lynne Griffin has been given full control Strange Brew the Elsinore brewery. Strange Brew exploring the massive brewery, Strange Brew find a shuttered cafeteria containing an old Galactic Border Patrol video game, which supernaturally reveals that Brewmeister Smith murdered John Elsinore and that Pam's bumbling Uncle Claude Paul Dooley was deeply involved. Bob recognizes a brewery employee as one-time hockey great Jean "Rosie" LeRose Angus MacInneswho suffered a career-ending nervous breakdown and has fallen under Smith's Strange Brew. Eventually, Bob and Doug wander into the Brewmeister's operations room while he is away, and Doug takes a floppy disk containing a video of John Elsinore's murder thinking it is a " new wave EP " and not realizing the importance of its contents. Smith and Claude tranquilize the brothers and arrange to frame them for murder, Strange Brew Pam and her father's friend, Henry Green Douglas Campbellin beer kegs in Strange Brew back of their sabotaged van, and instruct the brothers to deliver the kegs to a party. Unable to stop, the brothers crash the van into Lake Ontario. All survive Pam with apparent memory lossand the brothers are arrested. The brothers' antics at their trial cause the judge to declare them insane and Strange Brew them under Brewmeister Smith's care at the asylum. Rosie soon finds them and helps them escape, and they find and rescue Pam. Having figured out Brewmeister's plan, Rosie foments an uprising among the Strange Brew mental-patient test subjects. The brothers separate for the first time in their lives. Doug and a group of asylum inmates help Strange Brew Claude, while Rosie and another group overpower Brewmeister Smith. The spirit of John Elsinore, possessing the brewery's electrical system, electrocutes Smith when he is shoved against his light-up world map. Meanwhile, Smith has locked Pam and Bob in a brewery tank and is filling it with beer; they escape this possible death when Bob consumes all the beer, expanding to a cartoonish size. John Elsinore's ghost warns them that Smith has already shipped tainted beer to Oktoberfest and urges them to prevent Strange Brew beer from being consumed. The police accompany the brothers back to their house to retrieve their dog, Hosehead, Strange Brew invade the party.

    THE SOCIAL MEANING OF EH IN CANADIAN ENGLISH∗ Derek Denis University of Toronto 1. Introduction. The recent surge in sociolinguistic investigation of pragmatic markers such as general extenders (and stuff, and things like that), discourse and quotative like, and utterance final tags (right, you know) has been primarily fuelled by questions about grammaticalization and language change (D’Arcy 2005; Tagliamonte and D’Arcy 2007; Cheshire 2007; Tagliamonte and Denis 2010; Pichler and Levey 2011; Denis and Tagliamonte pear). Included in that set of pragmatic markers is eh, a very special variant (at least for Canadians). In this paper, I build on earlier work (Avis 1972; Johnson 1976; Gibson 1977; Gold 2005, 2008) and discuss the development of this very Canadian feature in terms of indexical order and indexi- cal change, along the lines of Silverstein’s seminal 2003 paper and Johnstone and Kiesling’s (Johnstone and Kiesling 2008; Johnstone 2009) work on Pittsburghese, which applies Silverstein’s framework. Although eh is well-known as the quintessential Canadian English stereo- type, there has been little research that discusses how exactly it came to hold this status. By tracking the points in time at which eh gained meanings at subse- quent orders of indexicality, a` la Silverstein (1993, 2003) and Johnstone (2009), I establish a timeline of the development of eh’s social meaning in Canada. My arguments draw on evidence based on the metadiscourse surrounding eh, perfor- mances of Canadian identity, real- and apparent-time data that tracks the usage of eh in Southern Ontario English over the last 130 years (Tagliamonte 2006; Denis 2012) and the commodification of eh.

DURRELL BOWMAN Given Canada’s relatively small population (twenty-one million in 1969, thirty-four million in 2009), many—but certainly not all—of the nation’s more ambitious musicians have pursued at least some of their career activities in the US and other foreign parts. Rush mainly demonstrates “Canadianness” by combining such British and American influences as progressive rock, hard rock, and indi- vidualism. However, the band has also included more specifically Canadian references across its long career. CanCon The Canadian government implemented specific content—or “CanCon”—regulations in 1971, and broadcasters were then required to include certain percentages of Canadian material. For music, at least two of a song recording’s four main categories of Music, Artist, Production, and Lyrics (“M-A-P-L”) must be “Canadian” according to citizenship or location. The interpretation of this changed after 1991, due to a “scandal” involving Bryan Adams failing to qualify as Canadian because of co-writing certain songs, such as “(Everything I Do) I Do it For You” ( Waking up the Neighbours and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves , both 1991), with such non-Canadians as Mutt Lange and Michael Kamen. (Spelling the word “neighbours” in the Canadian way apparently didn’t help.) The outcome is that even though Shania Twain similarly co- wrote the songs on Come on Over (1997) with her then-husband Mutt Lange and did not record any of this music in Canada, her album and its songs by that point qualified as Canadian.

    ASIATIC, VOLUME 6, NUMBER 2, DECEMBER 2012 The Hamlet Mash-Up1 Geoff Klock2 Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York, USA Abstract Shakespeare’s Hamlet is one of the most famous works of art in the world, and has inspired countless interpretations, allusions, references and discussions. The author describes his creation of a video collage of Hamlet material, that shows, rather than claims, the ubiquity of Hamlet, and points toward what Shakespeare could look like after the advent of the Internet. Hamlet’s value as Hollywood shorthand is discussed, and some of the throwaway Hamlet references are seen to be more complex than they may first appear. Projects of a similar nature are discussed and encouraged.
