FC Barcelona v AC Milan MATCH PRESS KIT , Barcelona Wednesday, 26 April 2006 - 20:45 CET Semi-finals - Matchday 12

Although home defeats in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds are not especially rare, an overall victory by the losing team is an unusual commodity. For AC Milan to overcome the odds - and FC Barcelona - and reach the final for the second successive season, they have to do what no side has managed since AFC Ajax ten years ago.

Odds against Milan · In 14 seasons of the UEFA Champions League, Ajax©s achievement in recovering from a 1-0 reverse at home to Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals to win 3-0 in Athens stands alone.

· Such is the task facing last year©s runners-up after Ludovic Giuly©s second-half strike sparked Barcelona celebrations at last week. Now, in their 100th UEFA Champions League match, the Spanish team will be hoping to book a place in the 17 May final in Paris. It would be only their second in the competition since its revamp for the 1992/93 campaign.

Unbeaten runs · Barcelona©s triumph in Milan maintained their impressive away record in this season©s tournament, ©s men recording four wins and two draws in six fixtures so far. They have conceded just once in those outings and that was an own goal by Thiago Motta in the last-16 first leg at Chelsea FC.

· Barça©s confidence will be further boosted by their unbeaten run at the Camp Nou. Following their home loss to Juventus in the quarter-final second leg in 2002/03, they are undefeated in nine matches at their home ground, winning seven and drawing two.

· In this campaign they have won four and drawn one at home, with a goal difference of 15-3.

Milan victors · Against visitors from Italy, Barça have suffered two reverses with eight victories and three draws. Milan were one of the two visiting teams to lower the Catalan club©s colours, winning 2-0 in the 2000/01 first group stage.

Last year©s revenge · The sides met again in last term©s group stage with Barcelona gaining a measure of revenge with a 2-1 scoreline at home. Samuel Eto©o levelled matters after Shevchenko had put the visitors ahead. then registered the winner with a minute remaining.

Identical records · In all Milan and Barça have played each other ten times and, remarkably, have identical records: P10, W4, D2, L4, F14, A14.

· Their most memorable encounter came in the 1993/94 showpiece, which produced the largest winning margin of the 13 UEFA Champions League finals to date. Milan triumphed 4-0 in Athens with a masterly display of attacking football that blew ©s fancied team away.

· Milan lost to Real Madrid CF in the 1957/58 European Champion Clubs© Cup final in Brussels, going down 3-2 after extra time.

Super Cup contest · The sides, both competing in their tenth UEFA Champions League campaign, also faced off in the 1989 UEFA Super Cup with a 1-1 draw in Spain preceding Milan©s 1-0 success at San Siro.

Fourth semi-final · In their fourth UEFA Champions League semi-final, Barcelona are hoping for a better outcome than in their previous two which both resulted in defeat - against Real Madrid in 2001/02 and by another Spanish rival, Valencia CF, two years earlier. Their first venture into the last four of the UEFA Champions League, in 1993/94, produced a 3-0 home win against FC Porto in a one-off fixture.

· Their only triumph in the European Cup came when they ousted Italian opponents UC Sampdoria 1-0 in the 1991/92 final at Wembley. Coincidentally, the same team suffered when Barça lifted the 1988/89 UEFA Cup Winners© Cup in Berne with a 2-0 victory.

Four in four · The Rossoneri will be desperate to safeguard their record of never having lost a UEFA Champions League semi-final: four appearances, four successes. But the defeat that ended a sequence of 13 unbeaten European games at San Siro ± comprising 12 wins and a draw ± threatens their hopes of making it five in a row.

Successive wins · Milan©s 2-0 victory at the Camp Nou in 2000/01 was the first of three wins in Spain, with successes at RC Deportivo La Coruña following in each of the next two campaigns. Milan have, however, lost on three of their last four visits with the other match ± at RC Celta de Vigo in the 2003/04 group stage - finishing in a draw. In 17 trips to Spain, Milan have won three times and drawn four.

· Their progress to this stage has been achieved largely thanks to their home form, seeing off first FC Bayern München and then in the knockout rounds. The Italian club recorded second-leg victories by 4-1 and 3-1 respectively at San Siro following away draws.

Just one win · Milan have won just once on their travels in this season©s competition when, on Matchday 5, Shevchenko scored a UEFA Champions League record-equalling four goals in a 4-0 thrashing of Fenerbahçe SK in Istanbul, the city in which Milan had suffered heartbreaking defeat in last year©s final. ©s players had raced into a 3-0 lead against Liverpool FC only to lose on penalties.

Away defeat · The away leg of the 2004/05 semi-final was not a comfortable experience for Milan. They had won the home game against PSV Eindhoven 2-0 through Shevchenko and but then succumbed 3-1 in the Netherlands with only an added-time effort from Massimo Ambrosini taking them through on away goals.

Leading scorer · Shevchenko remains the leading scorer in this season©s tournament with nine goals and coach Ancelotti will be hoping recovers from the virus that ruled him out of the first match to play alongside the Ukranian. Inzaghi struck against Bayern and Lyon, and has four goals in the tournament.

· Barcelona, who boast the competition©s second top scorer in seven-goal Ronaldinho, will be able to call on after he was suspended last week. Their progress to this stage was more assured than Milan©s, as they followed a 0-0 draw at SL Benfica in the quarter-final first leg with a 2-0 home success. The goals came in either half from Ronaldinho and Eto©o, and they could even afford a first-half penalty miss from the Brazilian.

Knockout streak: In qualifying for the 2005/06 knockout phase, Real Madrid CF tied Manchester United FC©s record of nine consecutive seasons in advancing past the group stage. While United©s streak came to an end this season, Madrid have featured in the knockout phase every time since the 1996/97 campaign. Regarding other teams in this season©s knockout phase, both AC Milan and Juventus have qualified for the last four knockout stages, one ahead of Arsenal FC, FC Bayern München, Chelsea FC and Olympique Lyonnais.

Last eight: Milan have advanced to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League in each of the past four seasons, winning the 2002/03 final against Juventus but losing the 2004/05 showpiece to Liverpool FC. Both finals went to penalty shoot-outs. Milan were eliminated at the quarter-final stage in the 2003/04 season by RC Deportivo La Coruña. Lyon are making their third consecutive trip to the quarter-final stage, but on the previous two occasions the French side have ended on the losing side: in 2003/04 to eventual competition winners FC Porto and then in 2004/05 to PSV Eindhoven.

Semi-finals: Semi-final opponents Arsenal and Villarreal CF are appearing in the last four of the competition for the first time in their history. Barça have qualified for the UEFA Champions League semis on three occasions, their only success coming in the 1993/94 season when defeating Porto 3-0. The Catalan side then faced Milan in the final, only to lose 4-0. Barcelona will be looking to avenge that defeat as they meet Milan in this season©s semis, but will be wary of the fact that the Italian side have reached this stage of the competition on five occasions before this season and they have yet to be denied a place in the final.

No qualifiers: Arsenal are the only club in this season©s knockout phase never to have played a UEFA Champions League qualifying-round match. To date, all of Arsenal©s matches have been restricted to the group stage and beyond.

Debutants: Villarreal CF are the only debutants to advance to this season©s knockout phase as FC Artmedia, FC Thun, Real Betis Balompié and Udinese Calcio all failed to advance beyond the group stage. To date, three debutants have won the competition Olympique de Marseille (1992/93, first UEFA Champions League final), AFC Ajax (1994/95) and Juventus (1995/96).

Head coach profiles

Frank Rijkaard Date of birth: 30 September 1962 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: AFC Ajax (twice), Sporting Clube de Portugal, Real Zaragoza, AC Milan Coaching career: Netherlands, Sparta Rotterdam, FC Barcelona

If Frank Rijkaard©s second season at FC Barcelona was anything to go by ± a Spanish title and some memorable performances in the UEFA Champions League ± there is no reason why he cannot steer one of Europe©s grandest clubs to even greater glory.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that his mentor as a youngster was Johan Cruyff. The Dutch legend groomed Rijkaard at AFC Ajax in 1979 where the defender progressed so quickly that he was pulling on the Netherlands shirt aged just 19. In 1987, Rijkaard left the Amsterdam club and had brief spells in Portugal and Spain before committing the key years of his career to AC Milan with whom he twice won the European Champion Clubs© Cup. Highly versatile, Rijkaard played in midfield for Milan but in central defence for his country as they lifted the 1988 UEFA European Championship.

He returned to Ajax in 1993 and helped them, ironically, defeat Milan in the 1995 UEFA Champions League final in Vienna. When he eventually hung up his boots, heads turned as Rijkaard was appointed coach of his country before UEFA EURO 2000™. A semi-final place followed but Rijkaard left his post to pursue a career in club management. His first stint ended poorly, as he resigned from Sparta Rotterdam in May 2002 when they were relegated from the Dutch Eredivisie for the first time, although Barça were not put off and have since seen their faith repaid handsomely.

Carlo Ancelotti Date of birth: 10 June 1959 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Parma FC, AS Roma, AC Milan Coaching career: AC Reggiana, Parma FC, Juventus, AC Milan

One of only four people ± the others being Miguel Muñoz, Giovanni Trapattoni and Johan Cruyff ± to have lifted the European Champion Clubs© Cup as both a player and coach, Carlo Ancelotti is one of the most highly-regarded young coaches in European football. He claimed the UEFA Champions League in 2003 in only his second season at the AC Milan helm (and would have added another were it not for Liverpool FC©s stunning fightback in Istanbul), and has added Serie A and medals to an individual trophy cabinet teeming with honours.

His coaching career is promising to become every bit as illustrious as his days as a no-nonsense midfielder. Ancelotti started out at AS Roma, winning the Scudetto in 1983, before moving to Milan three years later after his hometown club deemed him too injury-prone. He quickly went about proving them wrong, thriving at San Siro in five years of unyielding success which brought two more Serie A crowns and back-to-back European Cup wins in 1989 and 1990.

He started his coaching career in similar vein, leading AC Reggiana to promotion in his debut season in 1996. His success attracted the attention of Parma FC, whose decision to bring him to the Ennio Tardini was duly rewarded with an unprecedented second-placed finish. By 1998 he was at Juventus and although he never managed to better runners-up spot, Ancelotti did earn a return to San Siro. In March 2006, he extended his contract until summer 2008.

Domestic news

FC Barcelona were denied the chance to play at the weekend because of severe weather conditions in Spain but were not too downhearted, while Wednesday©s visitors AC Milan did get a full 90 minutes on Saturday and were delighted with a 3-1 win at FC Messina Peloro. That victory on their travels has moved the Rossoneri to within three points of Italy©s leaders Juventus.

Sevilla FC P-P FC Barcelona

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard was far from disappointed to see his team©s game against Sevilla FC postponed on Sunday evening after a torrential rainstorm flooded the pitch at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. The Dutch coach was relieved his players were granted some extra rest, explaining: "The only thing I can say is that it is good that we did not use any energy."

Rijkaard had already decided to rest Ronaldinho before making the trip to Seville after the Brazilian international reported a bruised thigh, while thigh injuries to Oleguer Presas and Henrik Larsson also forced their omission from the squad, along with Xavi Hernández (knee) and Lionel Messi (hamstring). Finding a new date for the fixture could prove to be difficult. In addition to this week©s commitments there is also a full league programme the following midweek and, should either Barcelona and Sevilla progress to their respective finals of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup they may have to apply for permission to play the game after the official season has finished.

Despite the possible problems with rearranging the fixture, Barcelona president Joan Laporta supported the decision by the referee, Fernando Teixiera, to call off the match: "It was the most logical thing to do," he said. "It would have been impossible to play on the wings and would have been dangerous for the players." Barcelona have an eight-point lead at the top with a game in hand on nearest rivals Valencia CF.

FC Messina Peloro 1-3 AC Milan

Milan came from behind to earn an important away win at Messina on Saturday. Goals from Marek Jankulovski, Gennaro Gattuso and Alberto Gilardino cancelled out Giuseppe Sculli©s opener in a hard-fought game that saw Messina finish with just eight of their players left on the field. Sculli, Antonio Noverino and Salvatore Aronica were all shown red cards while Clarence Seedorf was also dismissed for the visitors after a dispute with Aronica in the last minute.

Milan©s win could yet prove crucial to the title race as Juventus succumbed to their sixth Serie A draw and are only three points clear of the Rossoneri. However, Alessandro Nesta, Kaká and Massimo Ambrosini, Kaká©s replacement on Saturday, all picked up knocks and could need treatment ahead of the trip to Barcelona. Coach Carlo Ancelotti was already without Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Costacurta (flu), while club captain Paolo Maldini stayed at home to recover from a minor muscular problem. Playmaker Andrea Pirlo, meanwhile, missed the match through suspension while concerns about Cafu©s ankle subsequently proved unfounded.

Ancelotti deployed his strongest available lineup - with the exception of Rui Costa, who replaced Pirlo - and was pleased with the result, although not the injury developments. "The race for the Serie A title is not over yet," said Ancelotti. "We still have three games to finish top. Our target is to win them all and to do everything we can. At the moment, I cannot talk about the conditition of the players that picked up injuries but Kaká was hit hard. We will attack against Barcelona as we did during the first-leg game."

Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

UEFA information

Accreditations can still be requested until next Friday via uefa.com for the UEFA Champions League final at the Stade de France in Paris on 17 May. To cover the event, representatives of the written press, photographers, radio stations and websites, along with non-rights holding television stations, must apply directly to UEFA via the online accreditation system on uefa.com. In order to serve the media in the best possible way, UEFA has set a deadline of 28 April for applications.

On a similar theme, media representatives have until 12 May to apply for accreditation for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, which will take place in Portugal from 23 May to 4 June. Any media representatives interested in attending the final round should apply directly to UEFA, and can do so via the online accreditation service available on uefa.com.

UEFA CEO Lars-Christer Olsson, writing in the latest edition of UEFA©s publication uefadirect, says that the current UEFA Champions League format - which was introduced ahead of the 2003/04 season - is proving its worth. "The UEFA Executive Committee realised that the format with two group stages was not to the liking of the television channels or the fans, and that it congested the calendar," he said. "It therefore decided to abolish the second group stage, and the competition found a new lease of life and even generated more revenue, for the good of football in general and the lasting interest of its competitions."

Europe©s leading assistant referees were in Germany last week for a pre-FIFA World Cup workshop. More then 80 assistant referees from all six continental confederations were tested for physical fitness, as well as for familiarity with and interpretation of the Laws of the Game. FIFA will select 60 assistants in early May for World Cup duty. This summer©s event will be the first World Cup to feature only refereeing trios from the same country, or at least from the same confederation.
