En bortgången bandmedlem, ständiga hot om upplösning och den karismatiske sångaren Bradford Cox sjukdom Marfans syndrom (samma som Joey Ramone) är exempel på märkvärdigheter som inte gör bandet mindre omtalat. Deras musik framstår i jämförelse med närliggande konstskoleband som Liars, Animal Collective och Black Lips som mer noise- och droneorienterat. Albumet ”Cryptograms” från tidigare i år är på många sätt anledningen till bandets goda rykte. ”Cryptograms” är bandets andra fullängdare till lika debut på etiketten Kranky (Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Pan-American). Skivan tog två år att färdigställa och tar avstamp i en ambientbubblande anda vilken sakta men säkert övergår till ett poppigare format utan att för den sakens skull förlora det drömska mullret som på många sätt karaktäriserar Deerhunter. Efterföljande EP:n ”Fluorescent grey” spelades in under mixningen av ”Cryptograms” och trampar i samma psykadeliskt rockiga fotspår som albumet. Deerhunters främsta styrka tycks ändå ligga i deras konserter. Yeah Yeah Yeah’s sångare Karen O menar att framträdandena är en ”religious experience” och Ryan Schreiber på Pitchfork använder orden ”absolutely fucking insane live shows”.
