Protocols are simply the ways in which you work with people, and communicate and collaborate with them appropriately. They are a guide to assist you with ways in which you can work, communicate and collaborate with the Indigenous community of Western Sydney. A wealth of Indigenous protocols documentation already exists (see Section 9), but to date the practice of following them is not widespread. Protocols are also standards of behaviour, respect and knowledge that need to be adopted. You might even think of them as a code of manners to observe, rather than a set of rules to obey. -

Overview Aboriginal people need to be able to access lands and waters to continue their traditions. These traditional practices include fishing, hunting, gathering food, camping, gathering firewood, visiting places with cultural significance, caring for country, caring for burial and other sites, and practising culture. Aboriginal people may always attempt to negotiate access, but the landowner may not always agree. The legal rights of Aboriginal people to access land and water depend on the legal status of the land or waterway. Further information about land dealings may be obtained from the EDO’s series of Fact Sheets and from the NSW Aboriginal Land Council. Access to particular types of land General A Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) may negotiate an agreement with any land owner or occupier or person in control of land to permit an Aboriginal group or 1 http://www.edonsw.org.au/legal_advice 2 individual ‘to have access to the land for the purpose of hunting, fishing or gathering on the land’.2 If an agreement cannot be reached, the LALC may request that the Land and Environment Court issue a permit to access the land, or a right of way across the land, for the purpose of hunting, or fishing, or gathering traditional foods for domestic purposes.3 The Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) allows for access agreements to be negotiated. -

The History of the Worimi People By Mick Leon The Tobwabba story is really the story of the original Worimi people from the Great Lakes region of coastal New South Wales, Australia. Before contact with settlers, their people extended from Port Stephens in the south to Forster/Tuncurry in the north and as far west as Gloucester. The Worimi is made up of several tribes; Buraigal, Gamipingal and the Garawerrigal. The people of the Wallis Lake area, called Wallamba, had one central campsite which is now known as Coomba Park. Their descendants, still living today, used this campsite 'til 1843. The Wallamba had possibly up to 500 members before white contact was made. The middens around the Wallis Lake area suggest that food from the lake and sea was abundant, as well as wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas, waterfowl and fruit bats. Fire was an important feature of life, both for campsites and the periodic 'burning ' of the land. The people now number less than 200 and from these families, in the main, come the Tobwabba artists. In their work, they express images of their environment, their spiritual beliefs and the life of their ancestors. The name Tobwabba means 'a place of clay' and refers to a hill on which the descendants of the Wallamba now have their homes. They make up a 'mission' called Cabarita with their own Land Council to administer their affairs. They document various languages spoken in western New South Wales, including Wailwan, Yuwaalaraay, Guwamu and Muruwari, as spoken by Bill Davis, Fred Reece, Robin Campbell and Daisy Brown. The recordings also feature an oral history interview in English with Jimmie Barker. P129: The Personal Archives of Alfred Reginald RADCLIFFE-BROWN (1881- 1955), Professor of Anthropology 1926 – 1931 Contents Date Range: 1915-1951 Shelf Metre: 0.16 Accession: Series 2: Gift and deposit register p162 Alfred Reginald Radcliffe-Brown was born on 17 January 1881 at Aston, Warwickshire, England, second son of Alfred Brown, manufacturer's clerk and his wife Hannah, nee Radcliffe. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, and Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A. 1905, M. A. 1909), graduating with first class honours in the moral sciences tripos. He studied psychology under W. H. R. Rivers, who, with A. C. Haddon, led him towards social anthropology. Elected Anthony Wilkin student in ethnology in 1906 (and 1909), he spent two years in the field in the Andaman Islands. A fellow of Trinity (1908 - 1914), he lectured twice a week on ethnology at the London School of Economics and visited Paris where he met Emily Durkheim. At Cambridge on 19 April 1910 he married Winifred Marie Lyon; they were divorced in 1938. Radcliffe-Brown (then known as AR Brown) joined E. L. Grant Watson and Daisy Bates in an expedition to the North-West of Western Australia studying the remnants of Aboriginal tribes for some two years from 1910, but friction developed between Brown and Mrs. Bates. Brown published his research from that time in an article titled “Three Tribes of Western Australia”, The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. 43, (Jan. - Jun., 1913), pp. 143-194. At the 1914 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Melbourne, Daisy Bates accused Brown of gross plagiarism.
