Der Ruf nach Gerechtigkeit Museum Hof van Busleyden Mechelen 23 MÄRZ - 24 JUNI 2018 KUNST UND RECHTSPRECHUNG IN DEN NIEDERLANDEN (1450-1650) Recht und Unrecht sind ein häufig vorkommendes Motiv in der Blütezeit der niederländischen Kunst im 15., 16. und 17. Jahrhundert. Die Herzöge von Burgund wollten aus ihren Besitztümern in den Niederlanden eine politische Einheit machen, was tiefgreifende Veränderungen im Rechtssystem zur Folge hatte. Es wurden zentrale Gerichte wie der Große Rat von Mechelen eingerichtet, die die Autorität der lokalen Gerichte einschränkten. Die Rechtsprechung wurde professioneller, aber auch umständlicher und weniger zugänglich. Die Entdeckung der Neuen Welt, der Aufstand der Niederlande und die Spanische Inquisition gingen mit schrecklichen Gräueltaten einher. Andere und Andersdenkende wurden hart bestraft. So gut wie alle bedeutenden Maler aus dieser Zeit - von Rogier van der Weyden bis Antoon van Dyck und Rembrandt - befassten sich auf ihren Werken mit Themen wie Recht, Unrecht und Rechtsprechung. Sie verwendeten dazu inspirierende Beispiele gerechten Verhaltens aus Geschichten der Bibel, sowie aus Allegorien, der Mythologie und der Geschichte. Ihre Kunstwerke zeigen, wie Verbrechen bestraft wurden und schenken Trost bei Unrecht. Zeitgenössischer Missbrauch wird verspottet und angeklagt. Die Kunstwerke über Recht und Unrecht schmückten Rathäuser und Kirchen, drangen aber vor allem über Bücher und Kupferstiche auch in die Privatsphäre ein. 1. What we know about it comes from a so-called table or dinner play performed at the event. It is entitled Play of a jubilee (Spel van eender jubile) and was writ- ten by Donteclocke’s fellow townsman Cornelis Everaert.1 Table plays were staged at ground level, in front of or amidst the banqueters, without the use of a platform. They featured one to four characters – mainly personifica- tions – who engaged in a witty, spirited exposition, usually in an allegorical manner, on topics ranging from eating and feasting to the various occa- sions for indulging in these activities, as well as the beliefs, attitudes, and values that were supposed to inspire and sustain them. In approximately half of the extant examples the discourse revolves around a gift, eventually to be presented to the person or persons by whom, or in whose honour, the banquet was hosted. The play was like an elaborate, theatrical gift-wrap- ping that established for everyone to see and hear the relation between gift givers, receivers, and the gift itself. Gifts, like props, ‘encode networks of material relations that are the stuff of drama and society alike’.2 They are part of what in Deleuzian terms may be called a theatrical assemblage, the ‘disassemblement’ of which can help us establish and interpret their agency.3 Besides the plays and the gifts, the banquets themselves ‘can be understood (…) as (…) figurative and sym- bolic representations of culture’,4 which may provide precious insights into human relations in the historical past. -

Article Erasmus as Reformer: Humanism and Piety—Scholarship and Tolerance Paul Bernard Decock University of KwaZulu-Natal [email protected] Abstract Erasmus was an older contemporary of Luther, who agreed with Luther that reform was most necessary for the church, but he did not take the side of Luther because his approach to reform was very different from the one of Luther. This paper will consider some important aspects of Erasmus’s approach in comparison with Luther’s positions. Central in Erasmus’s view of reform was a return to the Scriptures: a return to the original texts (not the Vulgate), a return to the philosophy of Christ (not the scholastic speculations of his time), and a return to the Fathers as models of Bible readers (particularly the Greek Fathers, Origen). Erasmus did not see the core of the Gospel so much in particular doctrines (orthodoxy) but rather in the practice of Christian life (orthopraxis). In this perspective, Erasmus could tolerate theological errors in Origen as well as in Luther, as long as the basic commitment to the Gospel and the church was assured. Therefore, Erasmus blamed those Catholic theologians who were keen and quick to condemn Luther rather than to enter into serious theological dialogue with him. Erasmus’s De Libero Arbitrio was an attempt to model such a dialogue, but the times were not favourable for it. Dit deel opent met een brief waarvan het onderwerp, het apocriefe vierde boek der Makkabeeën, misschien niet iedere lezer zal aanspreken. Toch ademt deze eerste brief meteen volop de geest van Erasmus: allereerst omdat er sprake is van het herzien en verbeteren van een tekst uit de Oudheid en vervolgens omdat Erasmus een visie op de verering van relikwieën geeft die typerend voor hem is. Het contact met de Keulse geestelijke dat tot herziening van de tekst door Erasmus leidde, deed zich mogelijk voor toen hij in mei 1518 naar Bazel reisde, of op de terugreis in september van hetzelfde jaar. Doel van de reis was het verzorgen van een nieuwe druk van zijn uitgave van het Nieuwe Testament. Tijdens de heenreis schreef of voltooide hij een uitgebreide brief waarin hij zich verdedigde tegen kritiek van een onbekend persoon, onder meer naar aanleiding van passages uit de brief aan Maarten van Dorp uit 1515 (nr. 337). Een verdediging is ook de daaropvolgende brief aan Johannes Eck, Luthers toekomstige tegenstander, waarin Erasmus zijn voorkeur voor Hieronymus boven Augustinus toelicht. -

This title-page woodcut for the German version of Luther’s sermon (in 1520 German: Predig) on the two kinds of righteousness features the title of the sermon within a richly ornamented frame. However, the adjective beautiful (in German: schön) has been added to the title of the sermon, and it states that its author, Martin Luther, is an Augustinian friar attached to (the University of) Wittenberg. Sermon on Two Kinds of Righteousness 1519 ELSE MARIE WIBERG PEDERSEN INTRODUCTION Martin Luther wrote two Latin sermons on righteousness,a the Sermon on Two Kinds of Righteousness (Sermo de duplici iustitia), which he composed first, and the Sermon on Three Kinds of Righ- teousness (Sermo de triplici iustitia), which he published first.�b It has been a matter of discussion whether Luther wrote the first text in late 1518 or early 1519, but it is most likely that the Sermon on Two Kinds of Righteousness was originally preached on Palm Sunday, 28 March 1518, and then published in both an unau- thorized and an authorized version in 1519. Luther wrote about the sermon, along with another sermon on matrimony, in a let- ter to Johannes Lang (c. 1487–1548) on 13 April 1519; since it is based on Philippians 2:5-11, the pericope for Palm Sunday, it is assumed that it was preached in 1518.
