The Jurassic Fossil Wood Diversity from Western Liaoning, NE China
Jiang et al. Journal of Palaeogeography (2019) 8:1 https://doi.org/10.1186/s42501-018-0018-y Journal of Palaeogeography RESEARCH Open Access The Jurassic fossil wood diversity from western Liaoning, NE China Zi-Kun Jiang1,2, Yong-Dong Wang2,3*, Ning Tian4,5, Ao-Wei Xie2,6, Wu Zhang7, Li-Qin Li2 and Min Huang1 Abstract Western Liaoning is a unique region in China that bears diverse types of Jurassic plants, including leaves, fern rhizomes, and wood, providing significant proxy for vegetation and palaeoenvironment reconstruction of the well-known Yanliao Flora in East Asia. In particular, the silicified wood is very abundant in the fossil Lagerstätte of the Jurassic Tiaojishan Formation in Beipiao, western Liaoning. Previous and recent systematic investigations documented a high diversity of the Jurassic wood assemblages. These assemblages are dominated by conifers, followed by cycads and ginkgoaleans. In total, about 30 species belonging to 21 genera of fossil wood have been recorded so far, which are represented by Cycadopsida, Ginkgopsida, Coniferopsida, and Gymnospermae incertae sedis. The evolutionary implications of several distinctive fossil wood taxa as well as palaeoclimate implications are summarized based on their anatomical structures and growth ring patterns. This work approaches the vegetation development and evolutionary significances of the wood taxa and their relatives, and provides clues for the further understanding of the diversity of the Jurassic Yanliao Flora in East Asia. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The purpose of this study was to carry out the economic analysis of sheep farming in Isparta province, Turkey. The primary material of the study was comprised of original data acquired via survey method from a total of 80 farms determined by way of stratified sampling method. Accordingly, the farms were classified according to their size as 1st group (1-100 sheep, 23 farms), 2nd group (101-200 sheep, 22 farms) and 3rd group (>200 sheep, 35 farms). It was determined based on the study results that the production costs per animal unit (AU) decreases and net profit increases with increasing farm size. Indeed, production costs per animal unit in 1st, 2nd and 3rd group farms were determined as 5 424.13 TL, 4 221.83TL and 3 450.79 TL respectively, whereas net profits were determined as 2 467.26 TL, 2 761.26 TL and 3 314.77 TL. -

Determination of Inorganic Elements in Poppy Straw by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectrometry As a Means of Ascertaining Origin
Determination of inorganic elements in poppy straw by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry as a means of ascertaining origin E. ÇOPUR Department of Chemistry, Gendarmarie General Command Criminal Laboratory, Ankara, Turkey 4 N. G. GÖGER, and T. ORBEY Department of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey B. SENER¸ Department of Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey ABSTRACT Cultivation of poppy as a source of opium alkaloids for legitimate medical purposes has a long tradition in Turkey. The main products are poppy straw and concentrate of poppy straw, obtained from dried poppy capsules. The aims of the study reported in the present article were to establish inorganic element profiles for the poppy-growing provinces of Turkey by means of X-ray analysis by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM/EDS) and to explore the potential of the technique for determination of origin. Ten elements (sodium, magnesium, silicon, phosphorus, sulphur, chlorine, potassium, calcium, copper and zinc) were analysed in poppy straw samples from 67 towns in nine provinces. As regards the determination of origin, the most significant finding was the presence of copper and zinc in the poppy straw samples from 8 of the 15 towns in Afyon Province. Since those elements are not normally found in soil, it is assumed that their presence is the result of environmental (industrial) contamination. Differences in the samples from the other eight provinces were less signifi- cant, possibly a result of their geographical proximity. Nevertheless, differences in the samples were apparent. Because the findings are relative rather than absolute in terms of presence or absence of individual inorganic elements, further research is required to convert them into operationally usable results. -

However, these natural plants are used seldom for landscape or economic purposes. In this context, ground cover plants are often inconspicuous elements of a landscape plantation design because of their functional and aesthetics avantages. Although natural ground cover plants are very important, knowledges on the subject are unsufficient. In this study, potantial natural ground cover plants were determined in survey studies from the Lakes Region for the first time. The study was carried out among 2000 and 2004 years from different habitats in mountains of the region. By our observations in the study, concept of “ground cover plant” was defined newly. Collected and identified plants according to general flora books by the authors are hold in Herbarium GUL of Süleyman Demirel University. According to our field observations, botanical and ecological characteristics of the plants were determined for ground covering. A list of these plants was listed alphabetically. According to the results, totally 175 taxa belonging to 79 genera and 28 families were determined. 44 of them are belonging to Fabaceae family. -

A New Inscription from Pisidia
GEPHYRA 7 2010 41–45 Mehmet ALKAN* A New Inscription from Pisidia Abstract: In this contribution, an inscribed stone from Beydili, a village on the borders of Pisid- ia, is introduced. This inscription was placed in the wall of a modern fountain constructed from ancient material. The inscription was brought from an ancient settlement called Asarbaşı, an area located ca. 1 km northwest of Beydili and which has not yet been investigated. The stone bearing a relief of a sword-shield belonged to an exedrion built by a certain Maisolos, a priest, for himself and for his family members. This inscription records an indigenous personal name, Bliddis, previously unattested. Furthermore, there is a new word, ξιμει (dat. of ξιμις?), the meaning and the position of which should be clarified. This word probably indicates the name of an ancient settlement near Beydili or is perhaps a divine name. Keywords: Pisidia, Beydili, Maisolos, Bliddis, exedrion, latypos. The inscription introduced in this article was re-used within the wall of a modern fountain con- structed in the village of Beydili in Sütçüler, a county of Isparta Province (fig. 1). According to statements from the villagers, all of the stones used to build this fountain were brought from an an- cient settlement at Asarbaşı (formerly Cınıbız, perhaps a transformation of the word Ceneviz “Gen- oa”) ca. 1 km northwest of Beydili. To reach Beydili by car is possible only via a ca. 10 km long dif- ficult mountain road from Yeni (New) Beydili which was established some decades ago by the Beydili villagers in the Çamözü area.
