Hurunui District Council Waste and Recycling Newsletter Welcome to the Christmas edition of Hurunui Council’s waste and recycling newsletter. This is a special edition providing tips regarding how waste can be reduced and recycling maximised over the festive period. Thank you to everyone for their support in 2016 in working to maximise recycling and minimising waste. Edition 3: Christmas 2016 – page 1 Re-Purpose Greetings Cards into Gift Tags Ever wondered how many Christmas cards end up disposed of into landfill every year? Help reduce this number by recycling them via the transfer stations or through the recycling bags. Another option is re-purposing them into gift tags. As shown in the photograph, this is easily achievable with some imagination and ribbon. They could even be sold as a fundraiser for schools, pre-schools and community groups. Love Food, Hate Waste over Christmas and New Year Huge volumes of food waste are sent to landfill over Christmas and New Year. The Love Food, Hate Waste campaign is working hard to turn this around, by inspiring and enabling people to waste less food. For practical tips and suggestions regarding how to reduce your food waste over the holidays, (and save money too), visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz Another option is composting food waste; for help and advice, please contact Lesley. In addition, bokashi composting kits can be purchased from Council for discounted prices from Amberley transfer station and by ordering via the Amberley, Hanmer Springs, Cheviot and Amuri libraries. Maximise Recycling over Christmas and New Year Volumes of waste increase over the festive season, so below are some helpful tips to help reduce waste and maximise recycling in Hurunui over the festive season. Glitter free wrapping paper – recycle at any transfer station or via Council’s recycling bags. Greeting cards – recycle via any transfer station or through Council’s recycling bags. ChristmasEdition 2: October trees – recycle 2016 – pagevia the 2 Amberley transfer station. Glass bottles and jars – recycle via any transfer station; do NOT place in the recycling bags. Plastic bottles, cans, paper and card Unwanted clothes and shoes – can be dropped off for re-use at Amberley transfer station. Unwanted toys and games – donate to charity shops or sell on line. Food waste – compost by using a compost bin, womery or bokashi. Unwanted whiteware and electronic waste – if replacing microwaves, fridges, computers and televisions during the new year sales, remember to recycle unwanted items via any transfer station.
