Giant H II Regions in the Merging System NGC 3256: Are They the Birthplaces of Globular Clusters?

Freeman Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, The Australian National University ABSTRACT CCD images and spectra of ionized hydrogen in the merging system NGC3256 were acquired as part of a kinematic study to investigate the formation of globular clusters (GC) during the interactions and mergers of disk galaxies. This paper focuses on the proposition by Kennicutt & Chu (1988) that giant H II regions, with an Hα luminosity > 1:5 1040 erg s 1, are birthplaces of young populous clusters (YPC’s ). × − Although NGC 3256 has relatively few (7) giant H II complexes, compared to some other interacting systems, these regions are comparable in total flux to about 85 30- Doradus-like H II regions (30-Dor GHR’s). The bluest, massive YPC’s (Zepf et al. 1999) are located in the vicinity of observed 30-Dor GHR’s, contributing to the notion that some fraction of 30-Dor GHR’s do cradle massive YPC’s, as 30 Dor harbors R136. If interactions induce the formation of 30-Dor GHR’s, the observed luminosities indi- cate that almost 900 30-Dor GHR’s would form in NGC 3256 throughout its merger epoch. In order for 30-Dor GHR’s to be considered GC progenitors, this number must be consistent with the specific frequencies of globular clusters estimated for elliptical galaxies formed via mergers of spirals (Ashman & Zepf 1993). -
The SBF Survey of Galaxy Distances. I. Sample Selection, Photometric

Box 26732 Tucson, AZ 85726; Alan Dressler Carnegie Observatories, 813 Santa Barbara St., Pasadena, CA 91101 ABSTRACT We describe a program of surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) measurements for determining galaxy distances. This paper presents the photometric calibration of our sample and of SBF in general. Basing our zero point on observations of Cepheid variable stars we find that the absolute SBF magnitude in the Kron-Cousins I band correlates well with the mean (V −I)0 color of a galaxy according to M I =(−1.74 ± 0.07) + (4.5 ± 0.25) [(V −I)0 − 1.15] for 1.0 < (V −I) < 1.3. This agrees well with theoretical estimates from stellar popula- tion models. Comparisons between SBF distances and a variety of other estimators, including Cepheid variable stars, the Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function (PNLF), Tully-Fisher (TF), Dn−σ, SNII, and SNIa, demonstrate that the calibration of SBF is universally valid and that SBF error estimates are accurate. The zero point given by Cepheids, PNLF, TF (both calibrated using Cepheids), and SNII is in units of Mpc; the zero point given by TF (referenced to a distant frame), Dn−σ, and SNIa is in terms of a Hubble expan- sion velocity expressed in km/s. Tying together these two zero points yields a Hubble constant of H0 =81±6 km/s/Mpc. -
X-Ray Spectral Parameters for a Sample of 95 Active Galactic Nuclei

Fedorova2 1Main Astronomical Observatory NAS of Ukraine, Kyiv, Ukraine e-mail: [email protected] 2Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine We present a broadband X-ray analysis of a new homogeneous sample of 95 active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the 22-month Swift/BAT all-sky survey. For this sample we treated jointly the X-ray spectra observed by XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL missions for the total spectral range of 0.5-250 keV. Photon index Г, relative reflection R, equivalent width of Fe Kα line EWFeK, hydrogen column density NH, exponential cut-off energy Ec and intrinsic luminosity Lcorr are determined for all objects of the sample. We investigated correlations Г–R, EWFeK– Lcorr, Г–Ec, EWFeK–NH. Dependence "Г – R" for Seyfert ½ galaxies has been investigated separately. We found that the relative reflection parameter at low power-law indexes for Seyfert 2 galaxies is systematically higher than for Seyfert 1 ones. This can be related to an increasing contribution of the reflected radiation from the gas-dust torus. Our data show that there exists some anticorrelation between EWFeK and Lcorr, but it is not strong. We have not found statistically significant deviations from the AGN Unified Model. Deep photographs reveal that NGC constellation Fornax, adjacent to the distinctive triangle 1316 contains many dust clouds and is surrounded by a formed by 6th-magnitude Chi-1 ( 1), Chi-2 ( 2), and complex envelope of faint material, several loops of Chi-3 ( 3) Fornacis, is an attractive cluster of galaxies which appear to engulf a smaller galaxy, NGC 1317, 6 ′ known as Abell Galaxy Cluster – Southern Supplement to the north. Astronomers consider this to be a case of (AGCS) 373. In addition to his research that led to the galactic cannibalism, with the larger NGC 1316 discovery of more than 80 new planetary nebulae in the devouring its smaller companion. A New Sample of Buried Active Galactic Nuclei Selected from The

ABSTRACT We present the results of X-ray spectral analysis of 22 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with a small scattering fraction selected from the Second XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue using hardness ratios. They are candidates of buried AGNs, since a scattering fraction, which is a fraction of scattered emission by the circumnuclear photoionized gas with respect to direct emission, can be used to estimate the size of the opening part of an obscuring torus. Their X-ray spectra are modeled by a combination of a power law with a photon index of 1.5−2 absorbed by a column density of ∼ 1023−24 cm−2, an unabsorbed power law, narrow Gaussian lines, and some additional soft components. We find that scattering fractions of 20 among 22 objects are less than a typical value (∼ 3%) for Seyfert2s observed so far. In particular, those of eight objects are smaller than 0.5%, which are in the range for buried AGNs found in recent hard X-ray surveys. Moreover, [O III] λ5007 luminosities at given X-ray luminosities for some objects are smaller than those for Seyfert2s previouslyknown. This fact could be interpreted as a smaller size of optical narrow emission line regions produced in the opening direction of the obscuring torus. -

After combining HCN 1-0, HCO 1-0 and HNC 1-0 data from literature with our detections, relations between luminosities of dense gas tracers (HCN 1-0, HCO¸ 1-0 and HNC 1-0) and infrared luminosities are derived, with tight linear correlations for all tracers. Luminosities of CS 3-2 with only our observations also show tight linear correlation with infrared luminosities. -

We quantify the degree of lopsidedness for a sample of 149 galaxies observed in the near-infrared from the OSUBGS sample, and try to explain the physical origin of the observed disk lopsidedness. We confirm previous studies, but for a larger sample, that a large fraction of galaxies have significant lopsidedness in their stellar disks, measured as the Fourier amplitude of the m = 1 component normalised to the average or m = 0 component in the surface density. Late-type galaxies are found to be more lopsided, while the presence of m = 2 spiral arms and bars is correlated with disk lopsidedness. We also show that the m = 1 amplitude is uncorrelated with the presence of companions. Numerical simulations were carried out to study the generation of m = 1viadifferent processes: galaxy tidal encounters, galaxy mergers, and external gas accretion with subsequent star formation. These simulations show that galaxy interactions and mergers can trigger strong lopsidedness, but do not explain several independent statistical properties of observed galaxies. To explain all the observational results, it is required that a large fraction of lopsidedness results from cosmological accretion of gas on galactic disks, which can create strongly lopsided disks when this accretion is asymmetrical enough. -

Abstract Title of dissertation: Neutral Gas Outflows and Inflows in Local AGN & High-z Lyman-α Emitters in COSMOS Hannah Bowen Krug, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Dissertation directed by: Professor Sylvain Veilleux Department of Astronomy This thesis is composed of two parts: (1) a search for neutral gas outflows and inflows in local active galactic nuclei (AGN) and ultraluminous infrared galax- ies (ULIRGs), and (2) a deep and wide imaging search for high-redshift Lyman-α emitters (LAEs). In the first part, we utilize the R-C spectrograph on the Mayall 4m telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) to look for Na I D ab- sorption. Galactic outflows are thought to play a major role in galactic feedback and evolution, and previous studies of neutral gas have shown that galactic winds occur in most galaxies with high infrared (IR) luminosities. However, in composite systems where a starburst coexists with an active galactic nucleus (AGN), it is un- clear whether the starburst or the AGN is driving the outflows. This thesis attempts to answer that question by looking at samples of Seyfert galaxies, Palomar-Green quasistellar objects (PG QSOs), and ULIRGs. We first describe the results from a search for Na I D outflows in 35 IR- faint Seyferts. We find that the outflow detection rates for IR-faint Seyferts are substantially lower than those of IR-luminous Seyferts. The outflow kinematics of Seyfert 2s resemble those of starburst galaxies, while the outflow velocities in Seyfert 1s are significantly larger. Taken together, these results suggest that the AGN does not play a significant role in driving the outflows in most Seyferts, except the high- velocity outflows seen in Seyfert 1s.
