Thirty-seven of 42 species (ca. 88%) in 13 genera of the tribe were analyzed using nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-F markers in a family-wide context. Both single- marker and concatenated phylogenies corroborated Thlaspideae as a well-supported monophyletic clade. With the exception of polyphyletic Alliaria and Parlatoria and paraphyletic Thlaspi and Didymophysa, the remaining genera were monophyletic. Alliaria petiolata comprised diploid and hexaploid populations in two well-resolved clades. The non-weedy diploid and hexa- ploid populations are restricted to SW Asia, and together with diploid A. taurica (formerly P. -

Nat. Croat., Vol. 23, No. 1, 101–145, 2014, Zagreb. In this paper, an attempt is made for the first time to present a complete list of the vascular flora of the urban area of Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 965 plant taxa were collected during different seasons of the year and from various biotopes within the city. The most common families are Asteraceae s.l. (11.09%), Poaceae (10.67%) and Fabaceae (7.25%), while therophytes (38.86%) are the most abundant life form. The analysis of the urban flora of the city of Mostar showed that Mediterranean plants predominate (27.00%). Native species accounted for 84.35 % of the total number of taxa. The significant proportion of Mediterranean plants and the relatively high proportion therophytes indicate that the flora of Mostar has developed under the influence of the Mediterranean climate and a signifi- cant anthropogenic influence. The percentage contribution of endemics (2.80%) is also important. A total of 241 taxa of vascular plants (216 species and 25 subspecies) were found. Th e taxa belonged to 158 genera and 58 families. In the life form spectrum hemicryptophytes were dominant (46.9%). Phytogeographical analysis showed that the most plants belong to the Euroasian fl oristic element (46.1%), followed by Mediterranean fl oristic element (23.2%). Out of the total number of the identifi ed taxa, there were 13 endangered and three endemic taxa. Fischer✳ Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research, University of Vienna, Rennweg 14, 1030 Vienna, Austria ABSTRACT: This is on the one hand an announcement of the two-volume Fourth Edition of the Excursion Flora for Austria expanded by also including the remaining parts of the Eastern Alps (chapter 1), and on the other hand a rough survey of the flora of the Eastern Alps in connection with the main vegetation types (chapter 2). The geographical scope includes, besides Austria, the entire Eastern Alps from the Rhine valley in E Switzerland (Grisons) to the Vipava valley in SW Slovenia. Volume 1 mainly contains comprehensive introductory chapters like introductions to plant morphology, taxonomy, and nomenclature, as well as a sketch of ecomorphology and habitat ecology, a survey of vegetation types (phytosociology) and floristic peculiarities of the different natural regions, a rough history of floristic research, a detailed glossary including the meaning of epithets, etc., and drawings of several plant species characteristic of the flora covered. The structure of the keys concentrated in volume 2 is explained: besides the descriptive traits, they include for each taxon comprehensive ecological and plant geographical data, as well as information about Red Lists of the countries involved, plant uses, and taxonomical problems. Genus names are given not only in German, but also in the Romansh (Rumantsch Grischun), Italian, and Slovenian languages. In chapter 2, some important chorotypes including endemics are characterised, and an overview of floristic diversity (lists of exemplary taxa) in accordance with the main and most characteristic vegetation types is presented. -

Wallnöfer* Abstract An annotated checklist of the vascular plants native to and naturalized on the islands of Cres (Italian: Cherso) and Losinj (Lussino), compiled from the widely scattered literature, is here presented. 1403 taxa (species, subspecies and some hybrids) have been reported from the archipelago: 1130 taxa do occur on Cres, and 1150 taxa on Losinj (including the surrounding smaller islands, among them Unije [Unie] and Susak [Sansego]); 253 taxa are reported only from Cres, while there are 273 taxa that only occur on Losinj; 877 taxa can be found on both islands. Although included in this count, the presence in the area of ca. 160 taxa needs to be confirmed. Excluded are, however, 50 taxa from Cres and 36 taxa from Losinj, the occur- rence of which is here regarded as doubtful. The largest plant families in the area are the Compositae with 275, the Gramineae with 136 and the Leguminosae with 135 taxa. Some interesting or important own col- lections and observations, made during May and June 2007, are listed in the appendix. 13 plates with 70 photographs of some interesting taxa and some habitats are placed at the end of the checklist. Herein, this review aimed to provide a concise overview of the phytochemistry and antimicrobial, anticancer, and immunomodulatory properties reported in the literature for P. alliacea. The herb is rich in sulfur‑containing compounds that possess a broad‑spectrum of in vitro antimicrobial activity against pathogenic fungi and bacteria at low concentrations. P. alliacea also showed cytotoxicity and antiproliferative activity against cancer cell lines through sophisticated machinery of cellular damage in vitro. Other compounds such as flavonoids, terpenoids, and benzenoids are commonly identified inP. alliacea extracts, and they may also justify these activities. Despite the great pharmacological potential, clinical trials are required to ensure its effectiveness and safety. This review may raise new trends on the studies as well as contribute to the community by offering data for decision‑making with regard to its use in treating diseases.
