  • Thesis, the Songs of 10 Rappers Were Analyzed
ABSTRACT Get Rich or Die Tryin’: A Semiotic Approach to the Construct of Wealth in Rap Music Kristine Ann Davis, M.A. Mentor: Sara J. Stone, Ph.D. For the past 30 years, rap music has made its way into the mainstream of America, taking an increasingly prominent place in popular culture, particularly for youth, its main consumers. This thesis looks at wealth through the lens of semiotics, an important component of critical/cultural theory, using a hermeneutical analysis of 11 rap songs, spanning the last decade of rap music to find signification and representation of wealth in the rap song lyrics. The research finds three important themes of wealth - relationship between wealth and the opposite sex, wealth that garners respect from other people, and wealth as a signifier for “living the good life” - and five signifiers of wealth – money, cars, attire, liquor, and bling. Coleman II t the end of a decade, and approaching a new, the dominating pres- ence of hip hop and R&B is operating on a new foundation – social Amedia. The influence an artist has on pop culture and music quality almost always coincides with the artist’s presence on social media. When looking back at the songs that will form the popular music for the 2010 decade, such as Drake’s 2016 single Hotline Bling, or this year’s Old Town Road, these songs can’t be mentioned without noting their respective memes and the social media commotion that trailed these songs for months after their releases. The unification of social media and hip hop music is the source of influence in which established and emerging artists benefit. When a song is popular on social media, the artist has all they need to establish a fan base even before recording a full-length album or releasing another single. This year has been the biggest example of rappers emerging from social media: Megan Thee Stallion off the Hot Girl Summer hashtag and Lil Nas X with the buzz of Old Town Road stemming from video-sharing app TikTok earlier this year. When it comes to The influence that these songs have had on pop music throughout 2019 the careers of artists is an example of black social media’s influence on pop culture.

  • Kodak Black’S 2016 XXL Freshman Interview and Freestyle By: XXL Staff June 20, 2016
Watch Kodak Black’s 2016 XXL Freshman Interview and Freestyle By: XXL Staff June 20, 2016 Once an artist claims to be better than both Biggie and Tupac, hip-hop fans take notice. Kodak Black did just that during his interview for his spot on the 2016 XXL Freshman Class cover. “I’m bigger than Tupac and Biggie,” the 19-year-old Pompano Beach, Fla. native states. Earlier this month, Kodak dropped the fittingly titled mixtape, Lil B.I.G. Pac, a collection of tracks showcasing his growth since dropping previous projects like Project Baby, Heart of the Projects and Institution. It’s obvious the “SKRT” rapper knows a thing or two about staying productive considering he’s remained consistent with new material. “People just see like the shine, they don’t see the grind,” Kodak shares. Anyone familiar with his solo efforts or his guest appearances on tracks like French Montana’s “Lockjaw” know Kodak has a unique place in the game when it comes to his presence on the mic. “I got this voice from the lord I guess,” he continues. “I could just ride the beat any type of way, switch it up on it, come back with some other shit.” Songs like “Slayed,” off Lil B.I.G. Pac, serve as an example of Kodak’s delivery. Before the tape was out for the masses to hear, the Snipergang leader decided to use those same lyrics from the track for his 2016 XXL Freshman freestyle. “Hell yeah they call me Kodak but I ain’t come to take no picture/So icy, make it blizzard, and the lean I’m sippin’ sizzurp,” he rhymes.

  • Afro-Pessimism, Black Life, and Classical Hip Hop As Counter-Performance Kevin Eubanks
Eubanks: After Blackness, Then Blackness: Afro-Pessimism, Black Life, and JOURNAL OF HIP HOP STUDIES . After Blackness, Then Blackness: Afro-Pessimism, Black Life, and Classical Hip Hop as Counter-Performance Kevin Eubanks Just as Frank Wilderson cites the propensity of the black performance to obscure and evade black life and reality and calls for a more “direct reflection” on the “ghosts and grammar” that haunt the enactment of black subjectivity, Jared Sexton’s critique of Fred Moten’s optimism lies in the latter’s emphasis on the “fugitive ontology” of blackness, an ontology that has the black always on the run from the structures that govern a priori the anti-black world into which it would pretend to escape. Consequently, the challenge of afro-pessimism is to imagine, amidst the afro-pessimist negation, a black movement that is not or other than performative, something more than a “narrative strategy hoping to slip the noose of a life shaped by slavery,” but instead a more visceral apprehension of and engagement with the structural violence against blackness as “a grammar of emergence and being.” The question I would like to answer here is whether in Hip Hop one can discern just such a movement and apprehension. Black life is not lived in the world that the world lives in […]. That’s the whole point of the enterprise at some level. It is all about the implications of this agreed-upon point where arguments (should) begin, but they cannot (yet) proceed. — Jared Sexton, “The Social Life of Social Death” (2011) I know the price of life.
