asked whether rules could be enforced. The city could try to limit crowds, but what if the limit is 250 for a food truck event and 500 people show up? “If we can’t enforce that, then I can’t say yes,” Britton said at the start of the discussion. Jennifer Brooks, special events supervisor for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, said she surveyed busi- nesses. Overwhelmingly, she said, they would like to see special events return. If staff says no to an event, they will go to the Commission, so the time to talk about it is now, said City Manager Norton Bonaparte Jr. Discussion centered on what special events would do as far as trying to make them as safe as possible. For a food truck event, does the city require trucks to be only on one side of the street to help with distancing? What is possible? There would be signage asking people to distance, but now is the time to start these back up, most said Monday. Brooks said the restaurants know what they have to do. In Eustis, she said, they went back to business as usual and trusted residents to do the right thing. She asked if there are problems, would the event be shut down? Mayor Art Woodruff said that would not work to shut down a food truck bazaar or event. Several people men- tioned that at the Seminole High School football game last week, the announcer told people to practice social distanc- ing or the game would not resume. Commissioner Patrick Austin said the city doesn’t have control now as places over the weekend had crowds back. “The governor opened the flood gates on Friday,” Austin said. Bonaparte Jr. said one person replied to the City that Sanford without its special events is like the Supremes without Diana Ross. The person said we would practically be Deltona, which received some laughs. Woodruff asked Brooks if an event doesn’t go well, then what? Could the first event ruin it for everyone? Brooks said they would risk losing their event, which was how it was before the pandemic as well. She said Sanford has the most creative group of down- town merchants, and they would know how to handle the new situation. It was felt among most at the meeting on Monday that it is time to offer some events rather than letting them hap- pen. Britton asked Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith to weigh in. He said there is always potential for something to go wrong, but that the city should put the ownership back on the sponsors. Smith said if the city believes it’s time to open up, the sponsors should be responsible for safety and to make sure people coming understand which roads will be closed. If they fail, then the consequence would be they won’t be able to host the event again. That seemed to sum up the feelings of everyone after the discussion. might attract these animals to your yard or neighborhood. In the fall, Florida black bears begin preparing for the winter by consum- ing extra calories to pack on fat. During this time bears require around 20,000 calories a day and will eat any- thing that’s convenient. Often food from a garbage can provides bears with more calories in a shorter amount of time than foraging in the woods. You can reduce conflicts with these animals by securing your trash and other food attractants, such as birdfeeders and pet food. To keep bears wild and away from your home, follow these simple tips • Secure household garbage in a sturdy shed, garage or a wildlife-resis- tant container. • Put household garbage out on the morning of pickup rather than the night before. • Secure commercial garbage in bear-resistant dumpsters. • Protect gardens, bee yards, com- post and livestock with electric fenc- ing. • Encourage your homeowner’s association or local government to institute ordinances to require trash be secured from bears. • Feed pets indoors or bring the dishes in after feeding. • Clean grills and store them in a secure place. • Pick ripe fruit from trees and remove fallen fruit from the ground. • Remove wildlife and bird feeders or make them bear-resistant. See “how-to” videos and informa- tion on securing attractants in the “Brochures and Videos” section at MyFWC.com/Bear. It is illegal in Florida to intentional- ly feed bears or leave out food or garbage that will attract bears and cause human-bear conflicts. If you see or suspect that someone is feeding or attracting bears, call the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 1-888-404- FWCC (3922). You can also help people and bears stay safe by remembering to watch for bears while driving. This time of year, bears are traveling across more roads in search of food, which results in more vehicle-bear collisions. The FWC advises drivers to be aware of their surroundings as they drive in bear country, especially around dusk and dawn, and when there is forest on both sides of the road. If you see a bear crossing sign, pay particular attention as this area has had frequent vehicle-bear collisions.
