XXIV Porretta Soul Festival 21-24 luglio 2011 Torna la grande musica soul Swamp Dogg, Spencer Wiggins, William Bell, Percy Wiggins, Sugar Pie DeSanto, Harvey Scales, Toni Green, Austin de Lone All Stars, Chick Rodgers, Tribute To King Curtis with Sax Gordon & Groove City, The Memphis All Star Rhythm & Blues Band e tanti altri.

Reprinted with permission from Echoes of the Past magazine, Issue #116 (Summer, 2016), pp. 13 - 19. Charles Diamond Pennywell & the Fairlanes / Sunlover's Shreveport Doo Wop to West Coast Soul By Charlie Horner With Contributions from Pamela Horner city, next to New Orleans and Baton Rouge. It's always been an important music city, though it of- ten doesn't get the recognition it deserves. At one time or another, the Shreveport area was the home to important singers and musicians of all genres, including blues (Lead Belly), gospel (Ever Ready Gospel Singers), country & western (Hank Wil- liams, Johnny Horton, Jim Reeves) and rock-a-billy (Dale Hawkins), along with rhythm & blues, rock & roll and of course Cajun music. Shreveport's "Louisiana Hayride” broadcasts played a pivotal role in the music careers of both Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. Shreveport was the home of Stan Lewis's Paula, Jewel and Ronn record labels and the birthplace of Nashville music mogul Shelby Sin- gleton. Shreveport was a major hub in black mu- sic's “Chitlin’ Circuit”. Still, precious little research has been done on Shreveport's 1950’s African American music scene. Charles Pennywell began singing at the age of ten but really began to take it seriously when he got to high school. Influenced by r&b vocal groups like the Spaniels, Dells, Five Royales and Five Sat- ins, Charles and some friends formed a singing group of their own. "We were in high school Transitioning between 1950's doo wop, six- ties soul and seventies funk music is not easy.

  • Linda Martell, A.K.A
The Clerk’s Black History Series Debra DeBerry Clerk of Superior Court DeKalb County Linda(June 4, Martell 1941 -) Linda Martell, a.k.a. Thelma Bynem, was born June 4, 1941 in Leesville, South Carolina. One of five children, she began singing at the age of five and learned to cook for her family by the age of seven. She sang with a gospel church group with three of her bothers and later formed a trio called The Anglos with one of her sisters and a cousin; they performed at local clubs in the late 1950’s. She married in 1960 and the couple had three children. She changed her name at the suggestion of a local DJ who said she needed a better stage name. The DJ suggested she looked like a “Linda” - and Linda Martell and the Anglos were born. They released their first single in 1962, “A Little Tear (Was Falling From My Eyes)” on the Fire record label based in New York. Unfortunately, the single was never promoted and didn’t sell. They also recorded two more singles with no real financial return for their effort. Around 1966, Linda and her husband attended an Otis Redding concert in South Carolina. At one point during the evening, Otis, who had been paying particular attention to Linda, shocked the crowd (and her husband) by kissing Linda during the performance. Otis later asked Linda to go on the road with him, but her husband opined against it, fearing he would lose his wife to the popular singer. As fate would have it, Otis Redding died one year later in a plane crash while traveling on tour.

Directed by Morgan Neville Produced by Gil Friesen Produced by Caitrin Rogers WORLD PREMIERE U.S. DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2013 Running Time: 90 minutes | Language: English SYNOPSIS Millions know their voices, but no one knows their names. In his compelling new film TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM, award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends of the 21st century. Triumphant and heartbreaking in equal measure, the film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and eras of popular music, but each has a uniquely fascinating and personal story to share of life spent in the shadows of superstardom. Along with rare archival footage and a peerless soundtrack, TWENTY FEET FROM STARDOM boasts intimate interviews with Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name just a few. However, these world-famous figures take a backseat to the diverse array of backup singers whose lives and stories take center stage in the film. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT About two years ago, I sat down with Gil Friesen, a longtime music industry veteran from A&M Records, whom I only knew by reputation. He told me he wanted to make a film about backup singers. He didn’t know what the film was going to be, but he knew there was something intriguing in there.

  • GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.
