A five-year skeptical investigation reveals the surprising origin of this monster, finding that there’s more to this vampire than meets the eye. 1941: World War II Context U.S. fascists opposed President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) from the start. In 1933, “America’s richest businessmen were in a panic. Roosevelt intended to conduct a massive redistribution of wealth…[and it] had to be stopped at all costs. The answer was a military coup…secretly financed and organized by leading officers of the Morgan and du Pont empires.” A top Wall Street conspirator, Gerald MacGuire, said: “We need a fascist government in this country…to save the nation from the communists who want to tear it down and wreck all that we have built.”36 The Committee on Un-American Activities said: “Sworn testimony showed that the plotters represented no- table families — Rockefeller, Mellon, Pew, Pitcairn, Hutton and great enterprises — Morgan, Dupont, Remington, Ana- conda, Bethlehem, Goodyear, GMC, Swift, Sun.”37 FDR also faced “isolationist” sentiments from such millionaires, who shared Hitler’s hatred of communism and had financed Hitler’s rise to power, as George Herbert Walker and Prescott Bush, predecessors of the current presi- dent.38 William R.Hearst, newspaper magnate and mid- wife of the war with Spain, actually employed Hitler, Mus- On December 8, 1941, the day after the solini and Goering as writers. Bigfoot at 50 Evaluating a Half-Century of Bigfoot Evidence
B I C F O O T Bigfoot at 50 Evaluating a Half-Century of Bigfoot Evidence The question of Bigfoot's existence comes down to the claim that "Where there's smoke there's fire. " The evidence suggests that there are enough sources of error that there does nc have to be a hidden creature lurking amid the unsubstantiated cases. BENJAMIN RADFORD hough sightings of the North American Bigfoot date back to the 1830s (Bord 1982), interest in Bigfoot Tgrew rapidly during the second half of the twentieth century. This was spurred on by many magazine articles of the time, most seminally a December 1959 True magazine article describing the discovery of large, mysterious foot- prints the year before in Bluff Creek, California. A half century later, the question of Bigfoot's existence remains open. Bigfoot is still sought, the pursuit kept alive by a steady stream of sightings, occasional photos or foot- print finds, and sporadic media coverage. But what evidence has been gathered over the course of fifty years? And what conclusions can we 4mw from that evidence? / SKEPTICAL INQUIRER Manh/Apr**^ 29 Most Bigfoot investigators favor one theory of Bigfoot's ori- gin or existence and stake their reputations on it, sniping at oth- ers who don't share their views. Many times, what one investi- gator sees as clear evidence of Bigfoot another will dismiss out of hand. In July 2000, curious tracks were found on the Lower Hoh Indian Reservation in Washington state. Bigfoot tracker Cliff Crook claimed that die footprints were "for sure a Bigfoot," though Jeffrey Meldrum, an associate professor of bio- logical sciences at Idaho State University (and member of the Bigfoot Field Research Organization, BFRO) decided that there was not enough evidence to pursue the matter (Big Disagreement Afoot 2000). -

Buck Owens Obituary
Obituary of Buck Owens: March 27, 2006 By: Dave Hoekstra Buck Owens was more than a voice in country music. He was an American metaphor for the clarion of possibility after The Grapes of Wrath migration to California. Alvin Edgar "Buck" Owens was a honky-tonk singer, a TV star -- best known for his role in "Hee-Haw" -- and an entrepreneur who owned radio and television stations in Bakersfield, Calif. He was a good soul, one who would fly from Bakersfield to Portland, Ore., as he did in March 2005 to surprise compatriot Merle Haggard, who was opening for Bob Dylan. The depth of the moment was understood. With Mr. Owens standing stage right in a resplendent brown and black cowboy jacket, Dylan took a chance on Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home." Mr. Owens died Saturday at home in Bakersfield. He was 76. On Sunday, CMT.com reported the cause of death as a heart attack. He grew old, but his songs never became tired. In recent years he stopped touring outside of California, but he still managed to capture a new generation of fans that included Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle and the Bottle Rockets. In the late 1990s, John Soss of Chicago's Jam Productions held an annual Buck Owens birthday party at Schubas that featured artists as diverse as soul singers Otis Clay and Mavis Staples, and country-rocker Jon Langford. Mr. Owens crossed borders he never would have dreamed of as a child when he headed west with his sharecropper parents from the Red River Valley near Sherman, Texas. -

New York: The Free Press, pages. Americans have always been fascinated Day of Deceit: The Truth about Fdr and Pearl Harbor conspiracy theories. At the top of our pantheon of paranoia are the myriad hypotheses surrounding the assassination of President John F. Close behind are the continuing arguments that President Franklin Delano Roosevelt deliberately provoked and allowed the destruction of the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, in order to galvanize a reluctant American public into supporting national participation in World War II. This lingering suspicion is partly responsible for the recent drive to exonerate the commanders at Pearl Harbor, Admiral Husband Kimmel and Lieutenant General Walter Short, for their responsibility in the disaster on 7 December The latest book expounding this well-worn theory is Robert B. He has done some admirable and dogged primary research, filing innumerable requests under the Freedom of Information Act and spending many long hours searching in archives, and he demonstrates a journalist's knack for presenting a sensational story. The end result is an apparently damning indictment of FDR and his Cabinet, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, many naval officers above and below Admiral Kimmel, and the military intelligence community.
