World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) April 2, 2014 Every year, autism organisations around the world celebrate the day with unique fundraising and awareness-raising events. For the last 3 years we have held an autism fayre in Torfaen but this year we are celebrating WAAD through a range of activities in primary and secondary schools. During March 100% Awesome! –Cheryl Deneen and Esther Nicolaou will be delivering peer support training for year 6 pupils including a fun competition. Prizes for the winning team and school. Winners will join pupils from Fairwater Language and Communication Base and Pontymoile Autism Resource Base as they launch hundreds of balloons to celebrate WAAD. Tickets for balloons are on sale at £1 ([email protected]) and Cheryl with proceeds going towards two social events for children and young people with autism in association with Torfaen’s ASD Stakeholder Group- an exclusive session at Jump indoor play centre in Cardiff and a private viewing at a cinema.
31st March An official launch of Autism Awareness week 4-6pm at Fairwater Language and Communication Base with special guests! Competition entries on display for judging and light refreshments.
31st March & 1st April Sensory workshops at Pontymoile Primary School to experience the world of autism with Gemma Bussy- staff and pupils can attend. Monday all day and Tuesday morning for schools and pupils, Tuesday afternoon for parents. Also take the opportunity to complete the autism awareness certificate. Hope GB- parent Group Hope GB will be raising awareness at Pontypool Civic 11.30 – 1.30 on Monday 21st March, and in Pontypool & Cwmbran on WAAD 2nd April, 10 – 2pm. Torfaen Rocking for Autism 4th April -Evening event at Woodlands Community Centre, hog roast and band “Free Beer” (www.freebeertheband.com) tickets cost £12.50. 2nd April Balloon Launch -11 am at Greenmeadow Primary School, Pupils from Fairwater Base release hundreds of balloons to raise awareness for autism across Torfaen.
