Quick Reference Statistics – 31 July 2015 Quick Reference Statistics reports numbers of adults and young people who are in the care of the Department, either in custody or in the community, on a monthly basis. The Quick Reference Statistics are snapshot data for midnight (12am) on the last day of the month, comparison information for the same month of the previous year. The statistics are accurate as at the time the data is extracted from the systems. The data systems are dynamic and are constantly being updated and data integrity improved. For this reason data may change slightly from month to month or quarter to quarter. Time series statistics are reported in the Quarterly Statistical Report. A glossary of definitions is at the end of each report.

Definitions of terms

Term Description

Aboriginal Indigenous people of Australia. Non-Aboriginal An ethnicity other than Aboriginal. Persons who have identified themselves as being of Aboriginal or Aboriginality Torres Strait Islander descent. The term of a Community Based Order begins on the day the Commencement order is imposed as per the Sentencing Act 1995. An order issued by a Court of Law, or other authority, for the management of an offender or person on bail in the community. Community Based For example: Bail Orders, Community Based Orders, Intensive Order Supervision Orders, Work and Development Order and Early Release Orders (Parole). A young person who is being held in a youth detention centre as Detainee per the Young Offenders Act 1994. Facility A prison, work camp or youth detention centre. Juvenile Justice Team Diversion of a young person from the court system to a Juvenile Referral Justice Team. The most serious offence, out of a number of offences, for which a Most serious offence prisoner, offender or young person is being managed in the community or held in custody. Any person being managed by the Department under a Offender managed in community order who is not a prisoner or young person in the community detention. Prisoner An adult held in prison custody as per the Prisons Act 1981. Reception The receival of a prisoner or detainee into custody. Release A prisoner or young person who is released from custody. The personal security categorisation of the prisoner or detainee Security rating either as maximum, medium or minimum security. Sentenced A person serving a sentence issued by a Court of Law. In relation to prisoners and detainees, is a person in custody who Unsentenced has not had a sentence issued by a Court of Law. Sentenced Status Whether a person is sentenced or unsentenced. Snapshot Data Data counted at a point in time. When an offender completes a Community order or the order is Termination cancelled or expires.
