As the Olympic Torch passed through Calgary on the way to Vancouver it certainly brought back many great memories for me from playing in the 1988 Winter Olympics. In this issue we have a great story of two-time Olympian Dr. Randy Gregg, who was a teammate of mine in 1988. Vancouver will be of special inter- est to Randy as two of his children are competing in their first Olympics as speed skaters. Another alumni feature focuses on 2002 and 2006 wom- en’s Olympic gold medalist Cheryl Pounder. Throughout hockey's history, though they are not presented in the Footprints, francophone players like Guy Lafleur, Mario Lemieux, Raymond Bourque, Jacques Lemaire, and Patrick Roy also made a significant contribution to the sport. Parents still watch their children skate around cold arenas before the sun is up and backyard rinks remain national landmarks. But hockey is no longer just Canada's game. Now played in cities better known for their golf courses than their ice rinks, hockey is an international game. Hockey superstars and hallowed ice rinks became national icons as the game matured and Canadians negotiated their role in the modern era. Aims To increase student awareness of the development of the game of hockey in Canada; to increase student recognition of the contributions made by hockey players as innovators and their contributions to the game; to examine their accomplishments in their historical context; to explore how hockey has evolved into the modern game; to understand the role of memory and commemoration in our understanding of the past and present; and to critically investigate myth-making as a way of understanding the game’s relationship to national identity.     Le Canada & les Jeux Olympiques d‟hiver „En bref‟ Introduction Le 12 février 2010, Vancouver sera la ville hôte des XXIes Jeux Olympiques d’hiver, elle accueillera les athlètes du monde et ceux du Canada. Cette célébration marquera un nouveau chapitre dans la longue et riche histoire de la participation canadienne aux Jeux d’hiver. Le Comité Olympique Canadien a envoyé des athlètes à toutes les éditions des Jeux Olympiques d’hiver et James Merrick, membre du Comité International Olympique (CIO) au Canada, fut un supporter passionné de l’idée de créer des Jeux d’hiver séparés. Lorsque la « Semaine de sports d’hiver », qui devait plus tard être reconnue rétroactivement par le CIO comme les premiers Jeux Olympiques d’hiver, eut lieu à Chamonix (France), du 25 janvier au 5 février 1924, un petit groupe de Canadiens étaient présents pour écrire les débuts de cette histoire. Administrative History The Awards Office emerged in the mid-1970s at the University of British Columbia to administer student scholarship and bursary programs. In 1980 the name of the unit changed to Awards and Financial Aid and its mandate extended to include student loans. Byron Hender served as the first director of the unit from 1974 to 1991 when he was succeeded by Carol Gibson who served in the position until 2001. Following a reorganization in 2002, the functions of the unit were divided between merit- and needs-based activities and these were reallocated between Student Recruitment, Admissions & Awards and Records, Registration & Student Financial Assistance respectively. Scope and Content The fonds consists of three series, Discontinued Awards (1979-1999), Statistical Data (1975-1992), and Active Awards (1948-1993.     2010 BAUER NATIONAL INVITATIONAL ELITE LEAGUE PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY FOR UPPER MIDWEST HOCKEY PLAYERS Welcome to the 2010 Bauer National Invitational Tournament. This weekend’s tournament is the final event of the 2009 season for the Upper Midwest High School Elite League, a league formed to provide growth opportunities for the game of hockey, and for players from across the Upper Midwest. It’s no secret that Minnesotans love their high school hockey. It’s part of the culture here in “The State of Hockey,” coming to a peak each March with the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, a four-day showcase that draws more than 100,000 fans to St. Paul. However, about a decade ago many of the state’s premier players found themselves looking for an opportunity to play more games, and against stronger competition, than a normal high school season provided. The Upper Midwest High School Elite League was founded to help meet that need. Each year, the league conducts an extensive series of tryouts, talks to coaches around the state and selects about 120 players to compete in the Elite League’s fall season. Teams are formed around - and named after - geographic regions, giving the league Team Northeast, Team Southeast, Team Northwest, Team Southwest, Team North and Team Great Plains. Add in Team Wisconsin, and a team from the Shattuck-St. Mary’s school program, and you have an eight-team league that competes for eight consecutive weekends from September through October. League games are played mostly on Saturdays and Sundays, allowing players to continue to play football, soccer or other fall sports for their high schools.
