IX Resumo X Termos Chave: Arquitetura, Arte, Espaço, Contaminação A intenção que conduz ao tema desta tese advém da constatação de haver um hiato na definição do espaço como matéria comum às áreas disciplinares da Arte e da Arquitetura Contemporâneas. A pertinência deste estudo surge do facto de, apesar de se tratar de um tema comum de reflexão e abordagem - por críticos, teóricos e filósofos – principalmente desde as primeiras vanguardas do século XX até à atualidade, ainda estar por elaborar um estudo sistematizado sobre o mesmo. Este estudo apresenta como objetivo principal identificar a existência do conceito que se denominou de espaço contaminado como matéria comum à Arquitetura e à Arte. Como objetivos específicos propõe-se: (i) apurar e sistematizar o conceito de espaço contaminado identificado no primeiro objetivo principal, proporcionando o seu enquadramento na Teoria da Arquitetura e na Teoria da Arte da atualidade; (ii) identificar a existência desse espaço contaminado em obras de arquitetura e práticas artísticas contemporâneas internacionais; (iii) analisar obras de arquitetura e de arte portuguesas através de um estudo de caso onde se acredita encontrar-se espaço contaminado. As questões colocadas são validadas através de uma abordagem metodológica qualitativa, na qual se privilegia a revisão bibliográfica, nomeadamente no que se refere à consulta de fontes bibliográficas e documentais, entre as quais são destacados textos literários, textos teóricos e textos histórico-filosóficos. É desenvolvida uma aproximação teórica de pesquisa exploratória sobre: (i) a evolução do protagonismo do espaço, considerado contaminado, através de um enquadramento histórico, teórico e crítico, desde o fim do século XIX até à contemporaneidade no âmbito das matérias da Arte e da Arquitetura; (ii) identificação de práticas contemporâneas onde se encontra o género de espaço em estudo. Finalmente completa-se esta investigação com uma fase empírica de caso de estudo em profundidade, de teor crítico, reflexivo e interpretativo, baseado em obras selecionadas de arquitetos e artistas contemporâneos portugueses, nas quais se reflete o conceito de espaço anteriormente analisado, a saber: os arquitetos portugueses Álvaro Siza, Aires Mateus, João Mendes Ribeiro e Souto Moura; e os artistas portugueses Ângela Ferreira, Carlos Bunga, Fernanda Fragateiro e Pedro Cabrita Reis. Este estudo pretende obter as seguintes conclusões: a validação da pertinência das questões que constituem os objetivos desta tese e o encontro de um universo delimitado que possa ser denominado “espaço de contaminação entre arquitetura e a arte”, compreendendo a sua abrangência, definição e sistematização. Ambiciona igualmente identificar outras formas de contaminação que promovam dialéticas entre as duas matérias. Mas, fundamentalmente procura estabelecer categorias críticas de reconhecimento do território onde a Arquitetura e a Arte interagem, promovendo novos percursos interpretativos, abrindo caminho a novas possibilidades de investigação. XI Abstract XII Keywords: Architecture, Art, Space, Contamination The intention that is conducted to the theme of this thesis derives from finding a gap in the definition of space as a common matter to the disciplinary areas of Contemporary Art and Architecture. The relevance of this study comes from the fact that, although it is a common theme of reflexion and approach – by critics, theoreticals and philosophers – specifically since the first vanguards of the twentieth century until nowadays, it is still missing a systematized study about the subject. This study presents as its main goal to identify the existence of the concept named contaminated space as a common matter to Architecture and Art. As specific goals it proposes to: (i) investigate and systematize the concept of contaminated space identified in the main goal, providing its framework in the Contemporary Theory of Architecture and Contemporary Theory of Art; (ii) identify the existence of contaminated space in international contemporary architecture as well as international artistic practices; (iii) analyse Portuguese projetcs of architecture and art through a case study process where one believes to findcontaminated space. The questions raised are validated through a methodological qualitative approach, in which a bibliografic revision is priviledged, namely to what concerns the consultation of bibliografic and documental sources, among which are highlighted literary texts, theoretical texts, and historical- philosophical texts. A theoretical approach of exploratory research has been developed about: (i) the evolution of space’s protagonism, considered contaminated, through a historical, theoretical and critical framework, since the end of the XIX century until contemporaneity under matters of Architecture and Art; (ii) identification of contemporary international practices where one finds the type of space under study in this thesis. Finally this investigation is completed with an empirical case study phase, of critical, reflective and interpretative content, based on selected works produced by contemporary portuguese architects and artists, in which the concept of contaminated space is reflected, such as: the portuguese architects Álvaro Siza, Aires Mateus, João Mendes Ribeiro e Souto Moura; and the portuguese artists Ângela Ferreira, Carlos Bunga, Fernanda Fragateiro e Pedro Cabrita Reis. An outgrowth of the n-dimensional geom- etries developed in the nineteenth century, the concept predated the definition of time as the fourth dimension by Minkowski and Einstein in relativity theory. Only the popularization of relativity theory after 1919 brought an end to the widespread public fascination with the supra-sensible fourth dimension between the 1880s and 1920s. Ini- tially popularized by figures such as E. A. Abbott, Charles Howard Hin- ton, Claude Bragdon, and P. D. Ouspensky (as well as science-fiction writers), the fourth dimension was a multivalent term with associa- tions ranging from science, including X-rays and the ether of space, to idealist philosophy and mystical “cosmic consciousness.” This essay focuses on the differing approaches to higher spatial dimensions in the cubism of Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris, the suprematism of Ka- zimir Malevich, and The Large Glass project of Marcel Duchamp in the early twentieth century.
