BRUBECK BROTHERS JAZZ QUARTET COMING TO UM MISSOULA - Get a glimpse into the future of jazz and treat yourself to some well-known jazz standards when the Brubeck Brothers Quartet performs at The University of Montana on April 20. Daniel and Christopher Brubeck, sons of jazz legend Dave Brubeck, will team up with longtime friends Pete Levin and Mike DeMicco Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre to perform a unique blend of original compositions and jazz classics. Tickets cost $14 for the general public, $12 for UM students. They are available at all TIC-IT-E-Z outlets. Daniel Brubeck, a drummer who has toured the international music circuit for over two decades with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and his own group The Dolphins, has been a featured soloist with many of the world’s top jazz artists. Composer-lyricist Christopher Brubeck plays the bass, trombone and piano. In addition to performing with The Brubeck Brothers Quartet, he tours with Triple Play, a unique jazzy folk group that earns rave reviews. Levin plays piano, synthesizer, organ, French horn and banjo, and has performed or recorded with artists ranging from Miles Davis to Paul Simon. Guitarist Mike DeMicco -more- Brubeck.rl—2 leads his own jazz group in addition to working with the Brubeck brothers. He has toured extensively worldwide since 1980. Dave Brubeck’s career blossomed throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s with huge hits such as "Take Five" and "In Your Own Sweet Way." Sons Daniel and Christopher and their quartet will play some Brubeck classics at Friday’s performance. No segment of jazz or improvised music or avant garde or 4 whatever you call it is overlooked, since only as a full quilt can we keep out the cold of commercialism. But his Aphysical stature is exceeded by his sheer passion for music. “I am an unusual label,” said the gregarious head of MoonJune Records. “I do not sign art- COURTESY OF THE ARTIST ists. There is no such thing as a musician send- ing me a demo and me taking the demo into consideration. The whole label is built on my per- sonal friendship with musicians. When I started this label, I didn’t have distribution, I didn’t have money, I didn’t have a lawyer or publishing. I just said, ‘OK, let’s see how I can help my friends.’” The label’s inaugural release in 2001 was sax- ophonist Elton Dean and guitarist Mark Hewins’ collaboration, Bar Torque. And today, Pavkovic is closing in on the 100-release mark for his label, while his MoonJune Music agency has handled booking of about 2,000 shows in more than 50 countries. Indonesia has become a particularly fertile scene to tap into for Pavkovic, yielding dis- coveries like guitarist Tohpati Ario Hutomo and keyboardist Dwiki Dharmawan. “I find Indonesia to be a very interesting place,” he said. “Jakarta is a major city, like the London of Indonesia. Almost 20 million people live there from all around Indonesia and every- body knows everybody. It was very easy to make connections there, so I started booking bands and being involved with the festivals.

Lisa Maxwell Bio Lisa Maxwell, has composed, arranged, orchestrated, produced, and conducted music for small combos, horn sections, strings, big bands and full orchestra. Her unique voice as an arranger has earned her respect among her peers in the jazz industry. Lisa's music has been described as "high-level, beautiful, smokin', accessible, surprising, harmonically sophisticated, and sick (in a good way!)." Born in Los Angeles, Lisa started playing piano at age 6 and later switched to saxophone. At 16, she was regularly sneaking into jazz clubs. At 17, she took a film scoring class at UCLA and realized she wanted to write music for lots of instruments. Trumpeter Ray Copeland taught her jazz arranging, and Charlie Haden let her sit in on his classes at Cal Arts. Lisa attended Manhattan School of Music to study saxophone with Joe Allard, and spent her nights in clubs, where she met her musical heroes. Lisa returned to L.A. to study composing and arranging with Dick Grove in Studio City; and then won the Quincy Jones Arranging Scholarship to Berklee College of Music, where Herb Pomeroy taught her Duke Ellington's nuanced line-writing techniques. Lisa's original music has been licensed for TV shows including: Sons of Anarchy, Person of Interest, Dexter, Burn Notice, Four Weddings, Gravity. As part of the Emmy Award-winning music team for Warner Bros., Lisa was an orchestrator on all 52 episodes of Histeria! series, and Animaniacs: Wakko's Wish feature. As a sax player, Lisa led the horn sections on the Guns 'n' Roses Use Your Illusion world tour and Spinal Tap tour, and has performed and recorded with numerous other artists, as well as TV, theater, and awards shows.
