CohenMiller, PhD, Editor in Chief, Founding Editor Anna S. CohenMiller is a qualitative methodologist who examines issues of social justice and equity in education broadly, with a focus on gender, pedagogical practices, and popular culture representations. She received her PhD in Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching and MA in Bicultural-Bilingual Studies from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Since 2011, she has been involved with the SWPACA in developing Dialogue and then as an Executive Team member. Currently, Dr. CohenMiller works an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Nazarbayev University in Astana, Kazakhstan. Kelli Bippert, PhD, Managing Editor & Educational Resources Editor Kelli Bippert is an Assistant Professor of Literacy Education at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi. Dr. Bippert earned her Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Learning & Teaching from UTSA with a concentration in literacy education. Dr. Bippert’s research and scholarship center on adolescent literacy, cultural perceptions of struggling adolescent readers, technology-based reading interventions, and the integration of popular culture/ media texts to support in-school literacies. Selected publications include Fan Fiction to Support Struggling Writers and (Re)learning about Learning: Using Cases from Popular Media to Extend and Complicate Our Understandings of What It Means to Learn and Teach.. Karina Vado, Production Editor & Book Review Editor Karina A. Vado is a FEF McKnight Doctoral Fellow, and a Ph.D. candidate and instructor in the Department of English at the University of Florida. Her primary areas of research and teaching are in African-American and Latinx/Chicanx cultural studies, science fiction studies, science and technology studies, utopian studies, and critical (mixed) race and gender studies. At UF, she serves as Senior Coordinator of PODEMOS, an academic success and professionalization initiative for first-year Hispanic-Latinx students offered by Hispanic-Latino Affairs. Karina also served as the inaugural intern for “SF@UF,” a collaborative and interdisciplinary digital project seeking to improve the visibility and usability of UF’s diverse holdings in science fiction (SF), fantasy, and utopian studies. Miriam Sciala, Copy Editor Miriam Sciala is an Academic English Instructor in the Graduate School of Education at Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan. She has been teaching Academic English internationally for over 25 years. She holds an MA in Geography from York University in Toronto and an MPhil in Second Language Studies from Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Born in Switzerland and raised in Zambia, she now carries a Canadian passport. She considers writing and editing her second career, having written and published numerous articles and short stories and a first, still unpublished, novel. Her current academic position has her working with graduate students to develop their writing skills, especially as they relate to theses and dissertations. Robert Gordyn, Copy Editor Robert Gordyn is an Academic English Instructor in the Graduate School of Education at Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan. Of Canadian origin, he has taught English in nine countries over the last 25 years. His academic background includes an MPhil in Second Language Studies from Stellenbosch University in South Africa and an MA in Geography from York University in Toronto. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

The body of research in evolutionary psychology and ethology provide support for archetypal theory and the influence of archetypes (Hart & Brady, 2005; Maloney, 1999). Our idealized self is reflected in archetypes and it is possible that we draw on archetypal themes to compensate for a reduction in meaning in our modern day work life. Archetypal priming can touch a person’s true self and result in increased meaning in life. According to Faber and Mayer (2009), drawing from Jung (1968), an archetype is an, “internal mental model of a typical, generic story character to which an observer might resonate emotionally” (p. 307). Most contemporary researchers maintain that archetypal models are transmitted through culture rather than biology, as Jung originally argued (Faber & Mayer, 2009). Archetypes as mental models can be likened to image schemas, foundational mind/brain structures that are developed during human pre-verbal experience (Merchant, 2009).

    WiN: The EAAS Women’s Network Journal Issue 2 (2020) Skin-Deep Gender: Posthumanity and the De(con)struction of the Feminine/Masculine Dichotomy in Westworld Amaya Fernández Menicucci ABSTRACT: This article addresses the ways in which gender configurations are used as representations of the process of self-construction of both human and non-human characters in Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s series Westworld, produced by HBO and first launched in 2016. In particular, I explore the extent to which the process of genderization is deconstructed when human and non-human identities merge into a posthuman reality that is both material and virtual. In Westworld, both cyborg and human characters understand gender as embodiment, enactment, repetition, and codified communication. Yet, both sets of characters eventually face a process of disembodiment when their bodies are digitalized, which challenges the very nature of identity in general and gender identity in particular. Placing this digitalization of human identity against Donna Haraway’s cyborg theory and Judith Butler’s citational approach to gender identification, a question emerges, which neither Posthumanity Studies nor Gender Studies can ignore: can gender identities survive a process of disembodiment? Such, indeed, is the scenario portrayed in Westworld: a world in which bodies do not matter and gender is only skin-deep.     Vaclav Havel’s “The Power of the Powerless” "The Power of the Powerless" (October 1978) was originally written as a discussion piece for a projected joint Polish Czechoslovak volume of essays on the subject of freedom and power. All the participants were to receive Havel's essay, and then respond to it in writing. Twenty participants were chosen on both sides, but only the Czechoslovak side was completed. Meanwhile, in May 1979, some of the Czechoslovak contributors, including Havel, were arrested, and it was decided to go ahead and "publish" the Czechoslovak contributions separately. Havel's essay has had a profound impact on Eastern Europe. Zbygniew Bujak, a Solidarity activist, said: "This essay reached us in the Ursus factory in 1979 at a point when we felt we were at the end of the road. Inspired by KOR [the Polish Workers' Defense Committee], we had been speaking on the shop floor, talking to people, participating in public meetings, trying to speak the truth about the factory, the country, and politics. There came a moment when people thought we were crazy. Why were we doing this? Why were we taking such risks? Not seeing any immediate and tangible results, we began to doubt the purposefulness of what we were doing. Shouldn’t we be coming up with other methods, other ways? Then came the essay by Havel. Reading it gave us the theoretical underpinnings for our activity. It maintained our spirits; we did not give up, and a year later - in August 1980 - it became clear that the party apparatus and the factory management were afraid of us.

    Alt-Nation: Revival! 2015 and Last Good Tooth The Columbus Collective celebrates three years of the Revival of the Columbus Theatre with a mammoth party featuring a mix of both national and local acts from the genres of folk and Americana with even a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll. Since the Columbus reopened in November 2012 as a music venue, it has hosted over 300 touring bands plus countless local bands, plays and comedians. The theater also has been used as a recording studio where dozens of albums have been recorded as part of the Columbus Recordings. Its two rooms have allowed the Columbus to host everything from national headliners in the main theater to intimate shows with both local bands and up-and-coming acts in the smaller upstairs room where the set-up gives the audience a feeling of being right on top of the band. I particularly enjoy the upstairs for a high energy rock show as being in the seats as if one was in a balcony but yet mere feet away from the band offers a unique perspective. Some standout shows the Columbus has hosted with this effect include Rough Francis, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, and Barrence Whitfield & The Savages. The national acts for Revival! 2015 include violinist extraordinaire Kishi Bashi and indie rockers Screaming Females. Local ghost folkers and co-founders of the Columbus Collective, The Low Anthem, headline the local side of the bash that also includes The Huntress and Holder of Hands (new project of MorganEve Swain from Brown Bird), Last Good Tooth, and Vudu Sister who recently finished recording their third yet-to-be-released record at the Columbus.

This task began with a review for how the fire service and its responsibilities have changed over the past 20 years since personal protective equipment (PPE) was then affected by Project FIRES. In that 20 year period, the fire service has evolved to gain responsibility for a larger number of missions. Fire suppression is no longer the chief responsibility for most fire departments, but rather responses to a wide range of missions, including emergency medical aid, technical rescue, and more recently the prospect for terrorism events involving weapons of mass destruction. As America’s fire fighters attempt to keep up with these changing roles, it is noted that the level of preparedness and PPE needed to safety carry out the different missions is often lacking.
