2 | Friday, July 17, 2020 HONG KONG EDITION | CHINA DAILY PAGE TWO XIAOKANG@GRASSROOTS Left and right: Coffee production in Fushan, Hainan province, has brought prosperity to farmers. Center: Villagers in Shicha, Hainan, have benefited from growing dendrobium to produce a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. PHOTOS BY YE XIAOLIN / CHINA DAILY Island: Quality and efficiency pursued From page 1 After seeing the benefits of coffee production, Wang decided to use more vacant land to expand the plantation. He encouraged other farmers to join the industry to boost their earnings. In addition, he said one-day trips to Fushan are being planned for visitors to aid develop- ment of the township. Fu Cefu, a farmer in Fushan, was skeptical about making a profit from the plantation, until two years ago when he started working with Xu. Previously, the 46-year-old with a family of five earned a living from growing bananas. “Life was hard, as the banana plan- tation relied too much on the weath- er. If there were frequent typhoons, I had almost no harvest,” he said. This meant it was difficult for him to afford the tuition fees of his three children — one in high school and two in primary school. However, Fu now earns a steady income of 20,000 yuan a year from the 0.2 hectare of land used to culti- vate coffee plants. “Xu gives me the coffee seeds to grow, and his company is responsible for roasting and sales. I don’t need to worry about there being no market for my coffee, and this has given me a great sense of security,” he said.

http://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/browse/jpsa doi:10.2141/ jpsa.0160033 Copyright Ⓒ 2017, Japan Poultry Science Association. Genetic Variation of Nine Chicken Breeds Collected from Different Altitudes Revealed by Microsatellites Ailin Long1*, Ying Qing1*, Ting Gu1,QingZhu1, Yiping Liu1, Yan Wang1, Huadong Yin1, Gang Shu2,YuZhang1, Shuang Lai1 and Xiaoling Zhao1 1 College of Animal Science &Technology, Sichuan Agricultural University, Wenjiang 611130, China 2 College of Veterinary Medicine, Sichuan Agricultural University, Wenjiang 611130, China Genetic polymorphisms of 19 microsatellites were investigated in nine local chicken breeds collected from low, middle and high altitudes areas in China (total number was 256) and their population genetic diversity and population structure were analyzed. All breeds were assigned into three groups, including the high (Tibetan chicken (T) and Grey chicken (G), their altitudes were above 1000 m); middle (Chengkou mountainous chicken (CK), Jiuyuan chicken (JY) and Pengxian yellow chicken (PY), their altitudes were between 500 and 1000 m), and low groups (Da ninghe chicken (DH), Tassel first chicken (TF), Gushi chicken (GS) and Wenchang chicken (WC), their altitudes were below 500 m). We found 780 genotypes and 324 alleles via the 19 microsatellites primers, and the results showed that the mean number of alleles (Na) was 17.05; the average polymorphism information content (PIC) was 0.767; the mean expected heterozygosity (He) was 0.662; as for observed heterozygosity (Ho), it was 0.647. The AMOVA results indicated the genetic variation mainly existed within individuals among populations (80%). There was no genetic variation among the three altitude groups (0%). The mean inbreeding coefficient among individuals within population (FIS) was 0.031 and the mean gene flow (Nm) was 1.790.

Each group was further Chen ZI divided into control (CK), and three AHS ages (1, 2,or 3 weeks of age) experimental subgroups. The chicks in AHS subgroups were submitted I Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for o Tropical Animal and Plant Ecology, Hainan to acute heat stress (40 C for two hours between 12:00 and 14:00 Normal University, Haikou, 571158, China hours during the weekend) and the effects of heat stress on several daily behaviors were observed. At 8 days of age, the chicks of PHS subgroups were submitted to heat stress (40oC daily). The heat treatment ceased during the weekends and the effects on the behavior were observed three times daily for three consecutive days. The results showed that, compared with the CK group, the duration and frequency of drinking and lying-down behaviors of the AHS birds increased, whereas the duration of feeding and standing significantly decreased (p<0.01). The time spent walking by PHS birds was significantly longer than that of the CK groups (p<0.01), and drinking was also significantly longer than that of the CK group and was significantly different when birds were three weeks old (p=0.05).
