11 | P a g e COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE TECHNICAL CONSULTANT REPORT Submitted by: Cadfan Edwards

Challenge – Nationals– Canada Games: Technical Director Meetings were held at all three of these events. Skate Canada is focusing their plans in quadrennial cycles. The goal of these cycles is to produce medal hopefuls on an International Scale, while effectively building a solid base on which to develop these athletes from.

CMS – One of the largest changes last year, as well as a large discussion point was the CMS (Challenge Minimum Score). The score is developed by Skate Canada as a baseline on entry requirements to the Challenge Event. The Score was increased dramatically last season by Skate Canada with the hopes of raising the level of competition at Challenge and beyond. Although the scores were reduced again prior to our Sectionals, the initial increase in the CMS achieved the desired result. Although the initial score was substantially higher, many skaters in Canada rose to the occasion.

As an example – over 150 Pre-Novice Ladies achieved the high CMS And - Over 120 Novice Ladies achieved the high CMS

The outcome was a noticeable increase to the level of skaters at Challenge. In the Pre-Novice category right through to Senior there was an increase in points, and quality from previous seasons.

There was also a massive change to our judging system. The new judging system has tended to favor quality skating. With so many skaters achieving the CMS, a technical mark, the quality of the 50 or so skaters who made it through to the Challenge level was very high.

Although internally we are on the uptick and our skaters are progressing, as a whole we are falling farther behind the National Standard. Discussions continue around the Technical Director Meetings regarding having the highest quality skaters at the Challenge Level. Our number of entries for next year will be the following:

Pre-Novice – 3 Novice – 3 Junior – 2 Senior 2

We will get one guaranteed spot in each discipline, with all other entries requiring the CMS to attend the event. It is important to note that although our numbers have remained the same for the next season, Skate Canada has begun the process of adjusting entries from certain provinces to achieve the desired result of highest-level skaters at Challenge. BC’s number of entries this year has increased, and ’s has decreased. As discussions on this topic continue, I anticipate that we may be looking at lower numbers in future events if we do not raise our standard of entries.

Coaching/ Competitive/ STAR

High Performance: Moving forward the competitive committee will continue to structure their programming to target quality skating with a mix of Technical and PC aspects.

12 | P a g e COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE I believe the Section along with the Coaching Committee and the Competitive Committee should develop programming and support for the provinces few High-Performance Coaches. Identifying gaps/needs with these coaches would be the first step in understanding the support needed. From there, a development of programming and potentially financial aid should be put in place in some form. Our high-performance coaches are not only the developers of our high-performance skaters, but also our only line of mentoring for other coaches moving up the system.

This year marked the first year in which an athlete represented Manitoba at the National Level. A huge congratulations to the Coach and Athlete involved.

Team Structure: The competitive committee has worked hard to re-structure the makeup of our teams. The change sees different streams, as well as the members of each stream seeing benefits in different ways than previous years.

The new team will flow as follows: a) Development Tier 1 – The first stage of development for skaters striving to achieve the High- Performance Team and Skate Canada Qualifying Competitions. b) Development Tier 2 – The second stage of development for skaters striving to achieve the High- Performance Team and Skate Canada Qualifying Competitions. c) High Performance Team – Skate Canada Manitoba’s competitive skaters who are striving to achieve podium results at Skate Canada Qualifying competitions. d) Team Toba Elite – The Skate Canada Manitoba’s High-Performance skaters who have achieved to ½ placement at Challenge, Canadians, or participated in International Competition.

Through segmenting the team into four streams, the competitive committee hopes to fill the need of each skater in a more appropriate manner. The new structure as well as the benefits that go with each stage will motivate the skaters to move through the stream and achieve the next level of Team Toba.

STAR The STAR committee led by Carol Light has been hard at work executing phase 2 of the new STAR delivery and support program. With so many changes in the new structure I am confident that the program will not only provide support where it is needed, but also aid in identifying gaps moving forward.

While STAR is being supported, and High Performance is a small subset of our coaching population, the Provincial Level Group is where I would like to focus on growing. In the last 6 months, we have had 1 coach in the Province move into (and beyond) the Provincial Coaching Stream.

Converting, motivating and supporting Regional Level coaches into the Provincial Stream will be the goal; which should provide a strong base, and will help develop skaters and support clubs in a beneficial way. Identifying barriers will be the primary objective over the coming months in the first step of creating solutions.

Goals and Objectives Moving Forward: As fast as the sport is progressing, I believe Manitoba possess all of the resources needed to keep up. We have key people in Chair Positions that at the moment are just what we need to push things

13 | P a g e COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE forward. From a Section level, providing additional support and training will be paramount to retention and motivation of our dedicated volunteers.

1) Club Visits – Along with scheduled visits to Team Toba members, I will plan on up to 2 club visits per month throughout the season. The goal and purpose of these visits will be to gain an understanding how the clubs are functioning, and what their needs may be.

2) Skating Programs – We are very lucky moving forward to have strong chairs in the skating programs. By supporting these chairs, I hope to develop a cohesiveness between the sub committees as we strive for the same goals. Through Club Visits/ research and reporting, I hope to bring a well-rounded support to these committee’s that will aid in developing the programming that we need.

3) Research Data base – Work has begun on development of a data base that should provide the Section with the information we need to move forward. A final result is not always the best indicator of our success as a Section. Conversely the number of entries, or membership numbers is also not indicative of our success. Research will include, but will not be limited to the following;

a) Current Numbers of all levels of membership as it relates to other Sections b) Number of Coaches in different levels as it relates to other Sections c) Percentage of budget allocated to different programming d) Average Training time per club/ Region e) Average scores per category as it relates to other Sections f) Average age of development through the STAR Stream g) Average age of exit from the sport h) Turnover from exiting athletes to Official or Coaching Roles i) Turnover of CanSkate Numbers to STAR skaters j) Organizational make-up as it relates to other Sections/ Sports

I anticipate the scope of research, and information used will change over the year, but feel by diving into these topics we will gain a more efficient understanding of where we stand, and how to move forward.

MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE REPORT Submitted by: Shawn Cabak

OBJECTIVE: To promote the sport and secure partnerships for skating in Manitoba.

List of Committee Members Marketing Chair SCMB -Shawn Cabak Vice Chair SCMB – Don Brown Don Partrick Exec Dir SCMB- Shauna Marling

Committee meetings held on July 12, Aug. 21, Sept. 11, Oct.16, Nov.13, Jan 8 & Feb.12 The goal is to meet monthly.

Update on current approved budget items The 2019/20 budget was reviewed at our Feb. meeting. Clubs are being asked (through the RD) if they need/want a hard copy of the SCMB directory or if an electronic version is adequate. Not printing the directory would be a cost saving. Committee is looking at running a promotional contest with clubs – more information to be circulated.

The communication portion of the budget covers web tools, webinars, survey monkey/Wufoo for all the committees.

There have been some reallocation/moving line items from our budget area to the Administrative areas as they are more operational in nature.

Existing sponsors-Victoria Inn, Portage Vet Hospital & Funding partners: Sport Mb and Skate Canada.

The Portage Vet Hospital will not be continuing its sponsorship after this year.

25 | P a g e COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE Partnership Opportunities Promo video- discussions were held to develop a skating promo video. Further work will be done to see what can be produced that will be economical but effective. Social media provides many opportunities to promote the sport of skating. (potential club promotional contest)

It was determined that Skate Canada has several excellent videos that can be used for promotion with the Skating clubs in Manitoba.

A Mailchimp footer to feature SCMB sponsor logos now goes out on all electronic communications.

Update on SCMB – Strategic Direction Review terms of reference including Committee members The Marketing & Communication Terms of Reference were reviewed and amalgamated. A timeline will be included that will focus Marketing & Communication committee activities.

Skate Canada MOU committee Roles and Responsibilities Feedback was provided to SCMB from the Marketing and Communications committee to help develop a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Skate Canada in the areas of: A) Brand & Marketing B) Sponsorship and C) Event Delivery

Up-coming programs and initiatives Partnership/Marketing tool kit The committee reviewed the Partnership tool kit to be used with various sponsors. We can be flexible when using the tool kit to best match a company needs with what SCMB has to offer. Exclusive sponsorship will help to attract potential partners.

Marketing Package SCMB can offer companies a variety of goods and services including advertising, booths and banners at events, Facebook, website ads, enews blast to members & more. We can market various SCMB properties to potential partners ie. CanSkate, STARSkate, Competitive, Synchro events, AGM etc.

A marketing letter to highlight SCMB mission/values, who we are, the partnering opportunities available and cost was sent to several possible sponsors.

Identify potential new sponsors/marketing partners. Last year’s companies researched were reviewed including Wawanesa, Petro Canada, Dairy Farmers and Towers Reality. Various Community Foundations such as Winnipeg, Brandon & Portage were considered to see if they have a fit. Need to consider companies with good provincial coverage. Peak of the Market, Co-op’s & Canadian Tire were mentioned and others.

It is important to research the companies to be able to customize a package that they would be interested in supporting.

Marketing packages were sent to Dairy Farmers of Manitoba, Wawanesa, and Suncor. Source for Sports, Jackson and Pirouette were contacted.

26 | P a g e COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE Skating Promotion The committee is looking at advertising across MB to promote local registration sign up days and to contact local clubs for more information.

It was decided that instead of using traditional advertising that free news releases and online/social media advertising could be a more effective promotional vehicle.

Discussions were held with Public tv to broadcast a variety of Provincial skating events across the province. More work is required to determine the logistics to carry this out as it would be a great way to promote skating.

Skating Rocks Video Contest The Marketing & Communications committee is proposing a skating promotional contest to be held where all SCMB members can submit to SCMB 1 short 2-3-minute video to promote the sport of skating showcasing its skill, beauty, finesse, joy and power.

Details of the contest were discussed including the categories (age related, club/group/individual), prizes, deadlines, judging, and more. SCMB approved the proposal and funding to carry out the contest.

Communication strategy The communication matrix highlights all the media releases to be sent out for the major provincial events. SCMB has close to 4700 members including skaters, club executives, coaches and officials.

The Section office sends out numerous media releases throughout the year including 1) Canada Winter Games 2) Mb Open competition 3) Synchro events 4) STARSkate Regional events 5) STARSkate Provincials 6) CanSkate & more.

I would like to thank the Marketing and Communication committee’s efforts throughout the year. The committee will continue to promote the sport of skating and work to secure funding to improve skating in Manitoba.

AUDIO COMMITTEE REPORT Submitted by: Stan Yee

The year stated early in May where BC section requested audio help, so I went to Victoria Day Invitational in May. This was followed by attending the Ice Summit in Calgary.

The events attended by the audio committee for 2018-19: 1. Grassroots Bursary Ice Show 2. MB Summer Open 3. Skate Canada Manitoba Sectional Championships 4. Junior Grand Prix in Vancouver 5. Skate Canada International in Laval 6. SuperSkate 7. Grand Prix Final in Vancouver

27 | P a g e COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE 8. Skate Canada Manitoba Synchronized Skating Championships 9. Manitoba Open 10. SCMB STARSkate Championships 11. Crocus Invitational 12. Stony On Ice

There were no equipment issues and all the equipment performed without glitches.

The emailing in of music was a bit of a learning curve for everyone. The emailed music file must contain the skater’s first and last name, the club and the event they are competing in. Once the music was received, it played without glitches. This takes a lot of last-minute work off the audio group needing to rip music during the competition.

Some of the new computers don’t include CD drives any more so burning CDs and being able to purchase blank CDs is becoming more difficult. We will now accept a thumb drive (stick) with the programs on it. Each program must be properly labelled with the skater’s first and last name, the club they represent and the event they are registered in. The thumb drive will be put into a clear plastic sandwich bag at registration by the LOC so that labels can be put it.

Thanks to all the local organizing committees for their great hospitality. It was wonderful to meet you all and taking such good care of us.

DATA SPECIALISTS COMMITTEE Submitted by Don Brown

Has been a successful year for the Data Specialists Committee. Planning meeting was held in August to schedule assignments for the season. A Refresher/Update clinic was held in October with 10 participants. Donna Yee was invited to Skate Canada Challenge as an RSM and Don Brown was invited to the Canada Winter Games as a Data Specialist. Monique Laskovic, Barb Nickel and Denise Smith all wrote and passed their Level 1 Data Specialist exam. We also have three new Introductory Data Specialists this year. All competitions were fully staffed with Data Specialists. Progress is being made in converting CSS to LTS. LTS was successfully used at Synchro Championships, Manitoba Open, STARSkate Championships and Crocus with only a few glitches which were worked out. Skate Canada intends for it to be used for competitions in 2019/2020. Sharon Kemp retired after the North/South Westman Regional competition in Hartney in January. Sharon is going to be missed. She was a very experienced Data Specialist and was successful in mentoring and recruiting new Data Specialists.

Updates • VRO Equipment has been updated and will be in use next season • We had two Official’s promoted to higher levels of judging • We ran 1 Star 1-4 Clinic which resulted in three new judges • We ran 1 base level Clinic which resulted in one new Technical Official • This year a new system was used to retrieve official’s availability called Zoho… we are continuing to develop our needs within this system and plan to use new technological ways to make our means of communicating easier

The need for training We have compiled a list of people that are interested in taking clinics in the new year. A timeline/schedule for the next season is being worked on.

Mentorship/Professional Development Some discussion has taken place about the need for mentorship for newer judges. Would like to assign one person on committee or one to two officials to take charge of this and be the contact person for individuals needing guidance.

Changes There are a lot of upcoming changes to the training systems and judging in general. Have put some training on hold until more definitive answers come through so as not to waste the resources and have to re-train.

We will be having a meeting soon and can update the executive as to further discussion at that time.

29 | P a g e COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE TEST DAY COORDINATOR Submitted by Diane Harder

Test Days – There were 34 test days requested during the period from Nov.1st –March 31st. There were 11 test days requested in the period from April 1st-Oct.31st. 7 test days were cancelled related to low numbers of tests. A breakdown of test days & evaluators per region are listed below:

Region # of Test days # Evaluators Central Region 11 2 Eastman 4 2 Interlake 5 2 Norman 5 0 Parkland 3 0 North Westman 10 5 South Westman 5 0 Winnipeg 9 5

There are 3 Evaluators qualified at Senior Bronze level and 1 Evaluator at Junior Silver level. There are 12 Evaluators that are qualified at the Gold level. STAR 1- 5 tests are assessed by coaches. Evaluated tests are from Senior Bronze to Gold in all disciplines.

Meetings were held June 26, 2018, August 14, 2018, October 10, 2018, December 4, 2018

Programs

Start a Synchro Team Grant Aimed at clubs starting up a new synchro team or clubs with coaches new to synchro looking to gain knowledge and experience from a mentor coach. Helps layout choreography, provide advice on synchro element and transition execution, offer teaching progressions and orient clubs and parents to the successful operation of a synchro team.

One club with three teams applied this season. Carberry had a new coach who had never coached synchro previously. Tammy McKay worked with all three teams and their new coach.

Choreography Weekend Brings out a competitive coach for a weekend to choreograph programs. This highly beneficial program not only ensures teams’ programs are choreographed according to new ISU requirements, but also has produced programs with improved flow and speed and innovative elements and transitions.

The committee budget covers the cost of the travel for the choreographer. Participating teams registration fees covers the hourly choreographer fee. Additionally, teams are responsible to pay for all ice costs.

October 5-8 Locations: Stonewall, Hazelridge, Morris and Souris with 28 hrs of ice Choreographer: Jennifer Beauchamp-Critchton 4 teams participated: 1. 1 Pre-Novice 2. 1 Open 3. 2 Adult I

Synchro Skills Session This session is open to all individual synchro skaters and coaches from Pre-Juvenile to Adult levels. It aims to develop skating skills including knees, edges, posture, tracking and more. It included two off ice sessions: an orientation to Program Components and strength and flexibility. Coaches had additional time alone with the clinician to get training tips on element execution.

October 13, 2018 in Morden Clinician: Karen Ballinger Participants: 19 skaters and 5 coaches

32 | P a g e COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE Recommandations for 2019 : A. To encourage and facilitate higher participation from across the province, split the session into two days: one day located in the east and a second day in the west. B. Offer it in late Oct or early November to give clubs and teams more time to promote it to their members.

Synchro Monitoring Offers synchro teams the chance to receive feedback by both a synchro judge and technical specialist in time to make changes prior to the competitive season.

December 16, 2018 in Oakville Officials: Karen Ballinger (TS) and Mary Ellen MacDonald (Judge) 5 teams participated

Competition Format Synchro competition format was revised this season with teams competing twice in the same day. One benefit is teams received 2 report cards and officials’ panels were used for the full competition day rather than just half the day.

Future consideration: 10-12 min practice sessions could be sold as optional depending on ice availability (the Friday evening before and morning of). This could help generate more revenue for the host club.

Technical Update Original plan was to collaborate with the Section to host on webinar facilitated by a Canadian level official, however Skate Canada released two online training tools this fall which were shared with MB synchro coaches and officials.

Synchro Coach Mentorship Goal to encourage and provide guidance to coaches interested in starting up their own synchro team. Coaches are offered the opportunity to be paired up with a few different coaches to shadow them for the day at Synchro Champs or Crocus.

Synchro Athlete Award New award added to Sectional awards this season.

Review of what was on the memory sticks, updates from section office as well as important dates and updates from each region. At the September meeting, we started going through the Terms of reference. We submitted changes to the Terms of Reference to the board of directors. This committee has spent time discussing the role of Regional Director in depth and looking to make suggestions to the section. We have discussed any questions and concerns that come up through clubs and other regions. The RD have also been working hard with other committees of Skate Canada MB to open lines of communications. We understand that this has been difficult in the past but are working on continuing to gather information and share input from different regions in our province. We look forward to sharing information with all parties involved as we attempt to fulfill our duties as regional directors.

Programs • CanPower camp in September 2018 for 5 weeks with a total number of 13 registrants and positive feedback from the community • -CanSkate program two nights per week October to March with a total of 22 registrants • -No Bridging, Synchro or STARSkate program this year due to low enrollment and previous STARSkate members moving on to other sports and activities

Coaches • Change in Coach this season due to no STARSkate program – Meghan Rafferty Coached the CanPower Camp only this year • Abby Dyck Coached the CanSkate program this season (driving from Winnipeg to Morris)

Program Assistants We had 4 dedicated program assistants

Fundraising Wine raffle, Jets raffle tickets, Bigway Bucks, and Gift Cards The wine raffle was a big hit!

38 | P a g e COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE Successes • Improved parent participation • Better communication throughout the year (Facebook, emails, TeamSnap app, white board on our skating office door, printed pamphlets made with program info, names of coach, PAs and Executive listed on the door) • Online registration form • Purging of outdated/unused items, costumes, re-organization of materials • Ice show at the end of the season – families all shared how much they enjoyed watching and the kids enjoyed getting dressed up in costume and performing

Challenges • Noted needing more PAs for the first couple months due to a larger number of new skaters (never been on the ice) – Executive team members stepped up to help on ice • Financially not doing well: o Factors: ▪ Previous Executive depleting savings and not raising fees for several years ▪ No STARSkate program this year ▪ Low enrollment numbers • Parents wishing for different format away from the circuits • Difficulties sustaining kids’ attention and building enthusiasm all year

Future Plans Two Executive Members are stepping down (Melissa & Bruce Wilson) Will re-evaluate Coaching options due to financial stress – mileage from Winnipeg to Morris is an inhibitive option at this point – may have one of our PAs ready to Coach (working on her certification currently) by fall and she lives in Morris Offer the CanPower camp again in fall At the start of the season, have the Coach and PAs communicate with guardians about the purpose of the circuits, provide feedback on their children’s progress verbally in addition to Report Cards Offer CanSkate and possibly a small Synchro group Increase enrollment through wider community engagement earlier in the season Explore potential community sponsorship in addition to fundraising Increase fees as needed Attract more PAs to offer more one to one opportunity especially for the youngest skaters who require more support to overcome fears of falling Explore additional programs for example, adult learn to skate Will look at hosting test days and events in the future but not feasible at this time Continue hosting an end of the year ice show

Regional Board Updates

• Our most recent regional meeting was on Friday, January 24, 2019 at 7:00 pm held at the Anderson Inn in The Pas. Minutes were forward to the section. • Norman Constitution has been updated and shared with all of the clubs in the region via e-mail and hard copies presented at our AGM in January 2019. • The Norman Grid has been updated and will be circulated to the clubs in the Norman Region. • Communication with all clubs in our region has been successful via e-mail, meetings and telephone. • There has been a lot of new membership in some of the boards throughout the region. This has created a learning curve for many of us. However, the board members have stayed motivated and eager to make this a successful skating season for their clubs generating new ideas and methods of doing things. • Alternative Director, Treasurer and JBR are continuing for the 2019 -2020 season. • Our Director is resigning as of May 2019 due to relocating to Winnipeg, no one from the region would like the position as of yet. • All clubs are using Uplifter for registrations. This has been updated on all of the sites except for Skate Gillam in which the recreation facility is still under construction. The clubs are working at keeping the rest of the information updated on their websites. o All STAR Seminar was held on Oct. 20-21, 2018 in Thompson. Our clinician was Lori Bertholet from Westman and we had one Demonstrator, Megan Szabo. 23 skaters and 2 coaches attended from the Norman Region (Skate Thompson, The Pas Skating Club and Flin Flon Skating Club). The only club that did not have skaters representing was the Gillam Skating Club because at that time the club was not yet running due to the facility still being under construction. Skate Thompson applied and received a grant from Sport Manitoba that covered most of the costs of the event. o Skate Gillam is back in action! Skaters took to the ice in early January 2019 ad are anticipating a full year of skating for the 2019-2020 skating season. Welcome back Skate Gillam! o All clubs in the Norman Region have websites and online Registration.

Top 3 successes in your Region

1. Norman Regional STARSkate Funskate & Championship held in The Pas January 26, 2019. The event allowed 45 skaters from our region to come together and showcase their skills! Also, parents got together and had a lot of fun “Clowning Around” as was the theme for this event. The Pas were great hosts and it was a great break to the cold winter. Skaters from The Pas, Flin Flon & Thompson participated. A Test Day was held January 27 following the Championships in The Pas.

2. All STAR Seminar held on October 21, 2018 was successful as it allowed skaters from the Region to come together to skate and learn new skills from our clinician Laurie Bertholet. We are grateful Sport MB provided us with a generous donation to hold the event.

3. Our Region is growing with Skate Gillam becoming active again as a Club.

Top 3 issues in your Region 1: Skaters, executive members and families moving away makes it difficult for membership to grow in the clubs. Action: Keep skaters interested by providing a fun and friendly environment in which they will develop their skills by having guest clinicians and Test Days. Having shorter sessions (Sept-Dec and Jan-Mar/April allows families that may have to move still be able to participate. By adhering to the national standards Figure Skating will be viewed as a sport with skills that can be taken when/if the family relocates to another area as the skating levels will be honored elsewhere. Keep open the lines of communication between the Regions so families continue their involvement with Skating should they decide to relocate back to the North. 2: Vast area of the North makes communication and networking a challenge due to long distances between the clubs. Action: Maintain communication through e-mails, telephone calls, and regular meetings. Ensure all skaters from the Norman Region are invited to attend any workshop, seminar, test day, competition being held at any club in the Norman Region.

3: Financial hardship faced by families in the North due to job loss, restructuring of work organizations, uncertainties. Action: Keep the cost of figure skating affordable for families by ensuring clubs are doing fundraising

Top 3 Struggles for the Year 1. Coach recruitment (currently only have 1 coach for all of the programs). 2. The number of skaters has decreased (a lot of veteran skaters have graduated from high school and have gone on to college/university). 3. Getting skaters tested can be a challenge as one coach has to test all of the skaters in all of the programs. Top 3 Successes for the Year 1. CanSkate and PreCanSkate programs were very successful. A group of skaters mastered skills fast enough to move up a level during mid-season. 2. The club was able to engage community support, allowing them to give back to services for the community. 3. The club was able to recruit and retain enough interest from parents to have a fully committed board (we had troubles with his in past seasons).

New Initiatives The Norman Regional Board is looking to purchase their own computer to use at our annual Regional Competitions. This would save the region hundreds of dollars in rental and transport fees for a computer from the South as we currently do. We also have trained Data Input Operators from Thompson whom are able to run the computers for the competitions. The decision to purchase the computer to be voted on at the upcoming meeting in June 2019

Top concerns this year is very general in all clubs...... finding new executive members! I am finding the communication with my clubs is challenging. I am concerned for the future of some of these clubs. Other than that, I think all the events ran smoothly and our skaters are learning and improving every day.

COLLABORATION – RESPECT - EXCELLENCE 58 | P a g e

Fundraising: SKW did not have any direct fundraising events this year. Any money we made was competition driven. Century had a Pancake Breakfast and a Wine Raffle; both were a success and are planning to do them again next year.

Ice Show / Carnival: SKW did one they called them Showcases and they were held on skating sessions and were more of a presentation of the skills of the skaters highlighting what had been accomplished through the course of the year.

Constitution up to date: Revised at the Annual General Meeting of Skate Winnipeg, April 2017

Top 3 Challenges in Winnipeg Region for the year: 1. Availability of people to run the programs on a weekly basis. 2. Coordinating with Section Office. 3. Obtaining and retaining people to serve on the Region Board with changes in regions, lack of clarity as to the lines or non-lines and the overall purpose of the Region Board with only two clubs located in the city with a third operating within a previous designated region that is outside their region. It was a confusing year as a Region Board with virtually no authority or input was relegated to menial tasks. Top 3 successes in Winnipeg Region for the year: 1. Increased Numbers in CanSkate 2. Implementation of effective CanSkate Coordinator 3. Numbers are up slightly, with many skaters beginning to transition into the STARSkate program or group lessons. 4. Success of skater at Challenge & national Competition.

Upcoming Plans Regional AGM: April 15, 2019

Spring / summer/ Fall school planned: Skate Winnipeg has planned Spring, Summer and Fall. Century is hoping to book some ice for May and June.

Other comment questions or concerns. Manitoba Section Office has made registrations for competitions very difficult with numerous errors, resulting in excessive phone calls to their office to correct.
