A Taxonomic Revision of Hymenophyllaceae
BLUMEA 51: 221–280 Published on 27 July 2006 http://dx.doi.org/10.3767/000651906X622210 A TAXONOMIC REVISION OF HYMENOPHYLLACEAE ATSUSHI EBIHARA1, 2, JEAN-YVES DUBUISSON3, KUNIO IWATSUKI4, SABINE HENNEQUIN3 & MOTOMI ITO1 SUMMARY A new classification of Hymenophyllaceae, consisting of nine genera (Hymenophyllum, Didymoglos- sum, Crepidomanes, Polyphlebium, Vandenboschia, Abrodictyum, Trichomanes, Cephalomanes and Callistopteris) is proposed. Every genus, subgenus and section chiefly corresponds to the mono- phyletic group elucidated in molecular phylogenetic analyses based on chloroplast sequences. Brief descriptions and keys to the higher taxa are given, and their representative members are enumerated, including some new combinations. Key words: filmy ferns, Hymenophyllaceae, Hymenophyllum, Trichomanes. INTRODUCTION The Hymenophyllaceae, or ‘filmy ferns’, is the largest basal family of leptosporangiate ferns and comprises around 600 species (Iwatsuki, 1990). Members are easily distin- guished by their usually single-cell-thick laminae, and the monophyly of the family has not been questioned. The intrafamilial classification of the family, on the other hand, is highly controversial – several fundamentally different classifications are used by indi- vidual researchers and/or areas. Traditionally, only two genera – Hymenophyllum with bivalved involucres and Trichomanes with tubular involucres – have been recognized in this family. Currently, there are 13,600 species of pteridophytes around the world, and is the second most dominant plant group. In India, there are 1200 pteridophyte species with 70 families and 192 genera. The pteridophyte hotspots in India are the Himalayas, Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, Central India, and Andaman and the Nicobar Islands. The Western Ghats occupies only 6% of the Indian landmass and still holds a pteridophyte diversity of 383 species. Fern and fern allies are highly sensitive to changes in their natural habitat, thus habitat ABSTRACT destruction, anthropogenic influences, climate change, etc., are causing a fast decline in their population. Epiphytic species are easily destroyed due to the felling of trees and because of this at present 41- 43% of epiphytic pteridophytes in India are reported to be threatened. It necessitates the frequent analysis of the pteridophyte flora of a region to ensure the existence of its species diversity. The potential of in-vitro and ex-situ conservation techniques can be explored for the conservation of threatened pteridophyte species. -

Phytoestrogen emerged as a potential alternative of estrogen with minimum side effects. Green clover (Marsilea crenata Presl.) is a typical plant in East Java which suspected contains estrogen-like substances. The aim of this research was to report the phytochemical properties of M. crenata using GC-MS as a preliminary study. M. crenata leaves were dried and extracted with n-hexane, then separated using vacuum column chromatography to get four fractions, after that the n-hexane extract and four fractions were identified with GC-MS. The results of GC-MS analysis showed some compounds contained in M. crenata leaves like monoterpenoid, diterpenoid, fatty acid compounds, and other unknown compounds. The results obtained in this research indicated a promising potential of M. crenata as medicinal plants, especially as antiosteoporotic agent. WET FOREST SYSTEM WFs57 Southern Floristic Region Southern Wet Ash Swamp Wet hardwood forests on mucky or peaty soils in areas of groundwater seepage, most often on level stream or river terraces at bases of steep slopes. Community is uncommon and often present as small inclusions within larger forest areas. Vegetation Structure & Composition Description is based on summary of vegetation data from 32 plots (relevés) • Ground layer is characterized by raised peaty hummocks, with open pools and rivulets in seepage areas. Wetland species such as common marsh marigold (Caltha palustris), touch-me-nots (Impatiens spp.), and fowl manna grass (Glyceria striata) are common in wet areas, with Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus spp.), jack-in-the-pulpit (Ari- saema triphyllum), wood nettle (Laportea canadensis), wild geranium (Geranium mac- ulatum), common enchanter’s nightshade (Circaea lutetiana), tall coneflower (Rud- beckia laciniata), and other mesic or wet- mesic forest species present on hummocks. Skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus), false mermaid (Floerkea proserpinacoides), brome-like sedge (Carex bromoides), and smooth-sheathed sedge (C. laevivaginata) are sometimes abundant in seepage zones and in Minnesota are essentially restricted to this community. • Shrub layer is sparse (5-25% cover). Black ash seedlings or saplings are almost always present, often with wild black currant (Ribes americanum), chokecherry (Prunus virginiana), and nannyberry (Viburnum lentago). • Subcanopy, when present, is patchy to interrupted (25-75% cover) and generally not well differentiated from canopy. • Canopy is patchy to interrupted, with trees often absent from localized areas of groundwater discharge and in some instances limited to margins of the community around open peaty upwelling zones. -

Morphological and anatomical adaptations to dry, shady environments in Adiantum reniforme var. sinense (Pteridaceae) Di Wu1, Linbao Li1, Xiaobo Ma1, Guiyun Huang1 and Chaodong Yang2 1 Rare Plants Research Institute of Yangtze River, Three Gorges Corporation, Yichang, China 2 Engineering Research Center of Ecology and Agriculture Use of Wetland, Ministry of Education, Yangtze University, Jingzhou, China ABSTRACT The natural distribution of the rare perennial fern Adiantum reniforme var. sinense (Pteridaceae), which is endemic to shady cliff environments, is limited to small areas of Wanzhou County, Chongqing, China. In this study, we used brightfield and epifluorescence microscopy to investigate the anatomical structures and histochemical features that may allow this species to thrive in shady, dry cliff environments. The A. reniforme var. sinense sporophyte had a primary structure and a dictyostele. The plants of this species had an endodermis, sclerenchyma layers and hypodermal sterome, reflecting an adaption to dry cliff environments. Blades had a thin cuticle and isolateral mesophyll, suggesting a tolerance of shady environments. These characteristics are similar to many sciophyte ferns such as Lygodium japonicum and Pteris multifida. Thus, the morphological and anatomical characteristics of A. reniforme var. sinense identified in this study are consistent with adaptations to shady, dry cliff environments. A unique entry is generated for the specific name of each taxon in a specific publication. Taxonomic treatments cover all novelties at the rank of family, genus, species, subspecies, variety, form and named hybrid taxa, new name changes (new combinations and new names), new records, new synonyms and new typifications for vascular plants reported or recorded from China. Detailed information on the place of publication, including author, publication name, year of publication, volume, issue, and page number, are given in detail. Type specimens and collects information for the taxa and their distribution in China, as well as worldwide, are also provided. The bibliographies were compiled from 182 journals and 138 monographs or books published worldwide. In addition, more than 400 herbaria preserve type specimens of Chinese plants are also listed as an appendix. This book can be used as a basic material for Chinese vascular plant taxonomy, and as a reference for researchers in biodiversity research, environmental protection, forestry and medicinal botany. -

The history of the HUCP had its beginning in the middle of the 1970s with the foundation of the Biology Museum that gathered both botanical and zoological specimens. In April 1979 collections were separated and the HUCP was founded with preserved specimens of algae (green, red, and brown), fungi, and embryophytes. As of October 2016, the collection encompasses nearly 25,000 specimens from 4934 species, 1609 genera, and 297 families. Most of the specimens comes from the state of Paraná but there were also specimens from many Brazilian states and other countries, mainly from South America (Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Colombia) but also from other parts of the world (Cuba, USA, Spain, Germany, China, and Australia). Our collection includes 42 fungi, 258 gymnosperms, 299 bryophytes, 2809 pteridophytes, 3158 algae, 17,832 angiosperms, and only one type of Mimosa (Mimosa tucumensis Barneby ex Ribas, M. -

Osmundaceae Royal Fern Family A family of large coarse plants, these are our largest pteridophyte species. Stipes arise from rhizomes Page | 70 covered in persistent frond bases. Stipes are pubescent but without scales, bearing stipules at their bases. Fertile fronds may be separate from vegetative fronds, or fronds divided between sterile and fertile portions. Sporangia are not arranged in sori, but in short stalked clusters. Osmunda L. royal ferns A single genus finds its way to eastern North America; three species grow in Nova Scotia. All have pinnate or bipinnate fronds. Key to species A. Fronds twice-pinnate; fertile pinnae carried at the top. Osmunda regalis aa. Fronds pinnate; sterile fronds deeply divided, lobes nearly entire. B B. Fertile pinnae near the middle of sterile fronds; no woolly O. claytoniana pubescence at the base of pinnae. bb. Fertile fronds on separate stipes; pinnae with a tuft of pubescence O. cinnamomea in the axils. Osmunda cinnamomea L.
