V Praze dne 3.ledna 2018 3 Abstrakt Jakob Steinhardt (1887-1968) se řadí mezi nejvýznamnější německo-židovské umělce 20. století. Proslavil se díky svým dřevorytům s židovskou tematikou jako např. Svou pesachovou Hagadou a byl významným představitelem tzv. židovské renesance. Cílem této práce je zasadit jeho osobnost do kontextu německo-židovských dějin v prvních třech dekádách 20. století. Práce se snaží o rekonstrukci jeho okruhu umělců analýzu židovských konstrukcí identity. Metodologicky práce vychází z konceptu kulturního transferu, opírá se rovněž o historickou analýzu sociálních vazeb a práce z oblasti tzv. Visual turn. Pramennou základnu tvoří výtvarná díla umělců, knihy hostů Jakoba Steinhardta, jeho deníky, vzpomínky Minni Steinhardt a dobový tisk. Klíčová slova: židovství, identita, sionismus, židovská renesance, expresionismus, Jakob Steinhardt Abstract Jakob Steinhardt (1887 – 1968) has been ranked among the most significant German-Jewish artists of the 20th century. He became famous for his woodcuts depicting Jewish motives such as his Pessach-Haggada. He was also an important representative of the so-called Jewish Renaissance. The aim of this thesis is to present his persona in the context of German-Jewish history in the first three decades of the 20th century. The thesis tries to reconstruct his circle of artists and to analyse the Jewish constructions of identity. Methodologically, the thesis is based on the concept of cultural transfer; at the same time it also draws from historical analyses of social bonds and from the Visual Turn writings. The primary sources consist of individual pieces of visual arts, Steinhardts` guest books, his diaries, memoires of his wife and the then press. Key words: Judaism, Identity, Sionism, Jewish Renaissance, Expressionism, Jakob Steinhardt Abstract Jakob Steinhardt (1887-1968) zählt zu den bedeutendsten deutsch-jüdischen Künstlern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er wurde durch seine Holzschnitte zu jüdischen Themen, wie zum Beispiel seine Pessach-Haggada bekannt und war ein wichtiger Vertreter der sog. jüdischen Renaissance. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit besteht darin, seine Person in den Kontext der deutsch-jüdischen Geschichte der ersten drei Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhundert zu setzen. Es wird versucht,seinen Künstlerkreis zu 4 rekonstruieren und jüdische Identitätskonstruktionen in ihm zu analysieren. Als Quellengrundlage werden die Werke der Künstlern benutzt, genauso wie Steinhardts Gästebücher, seine Tagebücher, Erinnerungen von Minni Steinhardt und die zeitgenössische Presse.     HERMANN STRUCK The Art of Etching 1876-1944 April 11 – July 31, 2016 Opening reception: Monday, April 11th, 6-8pm Image: Hermann Struck, Self Portrait, 1928, Etcing 7.5 x 9.7 cm Some years ago, I was fortunate to inherit a part of the estate of Hermann Struck, who was my great uncle. Growing up in my parent’s home I was surrounded by his work, which played a large and formative role in my interest in art and aesthetics. It is with great pleasure that I organized this exhibition of works from my personal collection. Struck’s art manifested itself in an unusual world with a duality between two cultures: German and Israeli/Palestinian. In the course of his artistic career, Struck became involved with the activities of the Zionist movement in Europe in the early 20th century and became one of it’s most active and strongest supporters. In 1903, he took his first trip to Palestine, where he drew and painted the landscape and its people. He continued his artistic activities with great success in Berlin, where he wrote the important and ultimate book “Die Kunst des Radierens” on the art of the etching in 1908. He worked with and formed close friendships with many important artists of his time including: Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Lesser Ury, Edward Munch, Marc Chagall, Jacob Steinhardt, Joseph Budko, and Josef Israels. He also corresponded with and drew portraits of the senior Jewish intelligentsia of his time including: Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Martin Buber, Hermann Hesse, Theodor Herzl, and Arnold Zweig.

    Archetype and Adaptation: Passover Haggadot from the Stephen P. Durchslag Collection The week-long, springtime Jewish holiday of Pesach, or Passover, is beloved for its symbolic meaning and joyous customs. Passover marks the freeing of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, a narrative with universal appeal as a paradigm for collective and, according to some traditions, personal liberation. The Haggadah (plural: Haggadot), or “telling,” is the collection of prayers, legends, and stories recited on the eve of Passover. The basic text derives from the biblical instruction to retell the story of the Exodus each year during Passover in conjunction with a ritual meal called the Seder, or “order” (Exodus 13:8). Over the centuries songs and illustrations have been added to engage children, to whom the story was to be told, and some passages are given added prominence when they resonate with contemporary concerns. Illustrations in medieval manuscripts depict scenes from Exodus, the life of Moses, and Jewish Patriarchs. Many of these scenes continue to appear in early printed Haggadot, but the emphasis shifts to passages drawn directly from the text. The Haggadah has shown remarkable stability and flexibility: thousands of editions in all languages testify to its central role in Jewish life and its ability to incorporate new themes and respond to changing conditions. This exhibition is drawn entirely from the private collection of Stephen P. Durchslag, the largest known collection of Haggadot in private hands. “Archetype and Adaptation” explores the enduring influence of early printed Haggadot as well as the ability of modern versions to reflect political and social developments such as the Holocaust, Zionism, gay rights, and feminism.

I describe the distinct aesthetics of this art and explain its role in the Zionist nation-building project. Although Jerusalem’s art scene participated significantly in creating a Jewish–Israeli national identity, it has been accorded little or no place in the canon of national art. Adopting a historiographic approach, I focus on the artist Mordecai Ardon and the activities of the New Bezalel School and the Jerusalem Artists Society. Examining texts and artworks associated with these institutions through the prism of migratory aesthetics, I claim that the art made by Jerusalem’s artists was rooted in their diasporic identities as East or Central European Jews, some German-born, others having settled in Germany as children or young adults. These diasporic identities were formed through their everyday lives as members of a Jewish diaspora in a host country—whether that be the Russian Empire, Poland, or Germany. Under their arrival in Palestine, however, the diasporic Jewish identities of these immigrants (many of whom were not initially Zionists) clashed with the Zionist–Jewish identity that was hegemonic in the nascent field of Israeli art.

Efron, Chair This dissertation examines the successful merging of two highly divergent and developed historical and linguistic traditions into an organic and varied cultural matrix, under the twin conditions of Empire and nationalism. Specifically, this project discusses the linguistic, cultural, communal and organizational attempts of Hungarian Jewish community leaders to synthesize the Hungarian nationalist narrative, and Jewish religious and cultural traditions, into a meaningful whole, at a time when the Kingdom of Hungary, as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, experienced rapid industrial development, urbanization and population growth. It is in the Dualist Period (1867-1914) that the literary output and the community-building efforts of Jews living in Hungary reached the highly organized stage of development which warrant us ascribing to them a national signifier, distinguishing them from Jews living in other linguistic spheres. Thus it is in this period that we can begin to speak of “Hungarian Jews,” who came to identify nationally, culturally and linguistically with the Hungarian people and their language. I use archival and print sources to argue that Jews in Hungary became Hungarian out of political necessity and in order to secure their economic well-being within the Kingdom of Hungary.

Soltes Center for Jewish Civilization, Georgetown University, Washington, DC 20057, USA; [email protected] Received: 4 November 2019; Accepted: 10 January 2020; Published: 6 February 2020 Abstract: Mieke Bal’s concept of “migratory aesthetics” and the observation by Saloni Mathur and Anne Ring Peterson that “traditional notions of location, origin and authenticity seem obsolete and in urgent need of reconsideration” perfectly encompass the phrase “Jewish art”, and within that difficult-to-define subject, Israeli art (which, among other things, is not always “Jewish”). As Hava Aldouby has noted, Israeli art presents a unique inflection of the global condition of mobility—which in fact contributes to the problem of easily defining the category of “Israeli art”. Nothing could be more appropriate to the discussion of Israeli art, or to the larger definitional problem of “Jewish art” than to explore it through Nicolas Bourriaud’s botanical metaphor of the “radicant”, and thus the notion of “radicant art”. The important distinction that Bourriaud offers between radical and radicant plants—whereby the former type depends upon a central root, deep-seated in a single nourishing soil site, whereas the latter is an “organism that grows its roots and adds new ones as it advances ::: ” with “ ::: a multitude of simultaneous or successive enrootings”—is a condition that may be understood for both Israeli and Jewish art, past and present: Aldouby’s notion that the image of the Wandering Jew offers the archetypal radicant, informs both the “altermodernity” concept and Israeli art.   • A Gift to Biro-Bidjan, Chicago, 1937: from Despair to New Hope,” by Nathan Harpaz
    Title of presentation as announced in Program Book: “A Gift to Biro-Bidjan, Chicago, 1937: From Despair to New Hope,” by Nathan Harpaz. was the former director of an art museum in Tel Aviv, Israel and an instructor at the Tel Aviv University. He moved to Chicago in 1987. He received his Master degree in Art History from Tel Aviv University and he is currently working on his doctoral dissertation on the Idealism and Pragmatism of Zionist Architecture and Town Planning in Early 20th Century. Since 1998 Harpaz is the manager and curator of the Koehnline Museum of Art at Oakton Community College, Des Plaines, IL and he also teaches art history and museum studies. Description: In 1937 fourteen Chicago area artists created a folio of woodcuts as a fundraising project for the Jewish autonomy Biro-Bidjan in the Soviet Union. These artists were also active in the Works Progress Administration during the Depression era. The woodcuts reveal scenes of oppression and despair against images of ―new hope‖ and optimism. Some of them reflect the hardship of the Depression in the United State or the persecution of Jews in Europe and others express the expectations of the New Deal program or Stalin’s solution for a Jewish homeland. This presentation will explore the process of the study of these rare woodcuts from the acceptance of the portfolio to the research and publication.
