Bower This exploratory and descriptive study illuminates the lives of African American female teachers who lived in the upper Ohio River Valley between 1875 and 1915. Existing current research depicts teachers in the South and urban North during this period. This study highlights teachers from northern, small to midsized cities in order to bring them into the historical record and direct attention to their contributions to education. The focus of this historical, intrinsic, embedded, single-case case study was on the social profile, educational opportunities, teaching experiences, and support networks of Pocahontas Simmons Peyton, Susie Simmons (Jones?), Bernadine Peyton Sherman, Mary Peyton Dyson, Anna Stevens Posey, and Elizabeth Jennie Adams Carter.

  • Jennie Carter and the Performance of African American Womanhood in Reconstruction-Era California Vanessa Attia
“A Ladylike Employment”: Jennie Carter and the Performance of African American Womanhood in Reconstruction-era California Vanessa Attia College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, University of Florida This essay illustrates how Reconstruction-era journalist Jennie Carter borrowed the popular tropes of her eastern contemporaries and the cult of True Womanhood to legitimate her public voice as both an activist and a black woman. Conditions in the West allowed for her to break out of some of the more restrictive eastern traditions of black respectability, such as the reliance on rhetoric about light skin, desexualization, and overall rebuttals to plantation writing. Instead, Carter was able to extend her use of the respectability discourse to discuss temperance and to mobilize community activism around local politics. In other respects, Carter replicated the eastern tropes of black respectability that were most reliant on the cult of white True Womanhood—namely, the ideals of domesticity articulated in the figure of the maternalistic schoolmarm. INTRODUCTION black writer a chance to rise into the same academic discourse that more well-known figures like Frances Ellen On Independence Day in 1868, an African American Watkins Harper and Ida B. Wells have been circulating for woman from Nevada County, California set down to paper years. This essay will insert Jennie Carter into this her earnest plea to resurrect the black public school of San historical discussion by comparing her methods of public Francisco after a city decree that all “except the colored self-representation with that of Maria W. Stewart and school” would open two days later. “How long must we Frances Ellen Watkins Harper.

  • Birthright Citizens
i Birthright Citizens Birthright Citizens tells how African American activists transformed the terms of citizenship for all Americans. Before the Civil War, col- onization schemes and raced- based laws threatened to deport former slaves born in United States. Birthright Citizens recovers the story of how African American activists remade national belonging through battles in legislatures, conventions, and courthouses. They faced for- midable opposition, most notoriously from the US Supreme Court decision in Dred Scott . Still, Martha Jones explains, no single case defi ned their status. Former slaves studied law, secured allies, and conducted themselves like citizens, establishing their status through local, everyday claims. All along they argued that birth guaranteed their rights. With fresh archival sources and an ambitious reframing of constitutional lawmaking before the Civil War, Jones shows how, when the Fourteenth Amendment constitutionalized the birthright principle, black Americans’ aspirations were realized. Martha S. Jones is the Society of Black Alumni Presidential Professor and Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University. She was for- merly a Presidential Bicentennial Professor at the University of Michigan, and was a founding director of the Michigan Law School Program in Race, Law & History. She is the author of All Bound Up Together: The Woman Question in African American Public Culture, 1830– 1900 (2007) and coeditor of Toward an Intellectual History of Black Women (2015). The course will examine how the West came to be settled by European and Asian immigrants, defined, and ultimately viewed as distinctive. Students will understand how geology, topography, and climate—aridity in particular—have shaped the region’s history, development and public policies. Aridity accounts in part for the fact that the federal government is the region’s largest landlord, controlling more than 50 percent of the West’s surface area. In addition, Western governance is complicated and distinctively shaped by its populist culture, direct democracy options, and highly fractured system of local jurisdictions.
