“Aunt” Clara Brown
“Aunt” Clara Brown Often called the “Angel of the Rockies,” Clara Brown reflects the richness of the African-American experience. She faced enormous challenges and reached wonderful heights in her nearly eighty-five years. Turning her back on her life in slavery, she looked west for the children she had lost. She then became one of the first African-American women to settle in Colorado. Clara was skillful in business ventures and investments that earned her thousands of dollars. She also gained a reputation for community care. She helped people of all races, but she worked especially hard to bring black people out of poverty and enslavement. Enslaved Clara Brown was probably born into slavery in Virginia around 1800. Wealthy white southerners who “owned” Clara often auctioned her to the highest bidder as if she were a horse to be sold. Each time she was bought, she would have to move, sometimes even to a different state. Clara married when she was eighteen, and later gave birth to four children. Tragically, all of her children and her husband were sold to different people across the country. She vowed to work for the rest of her life to reunite her shattered family. Clara worked as a domestic servant until 1856 when her “owner” at the time, George Brown, died. Fortunately, his family helped Clara achieve her freedom, and she could begin the search for her missing children. Heading West Hearing that one of her daughters, Eliza, may have moved to the West, Clara headed in that direction. She had money to travel, but black people at the time were forbidden from buying stagecoach tickets. -

'DEPRIVED OF THEIR LIBERTY': ENEMY PRISONERS AND THE CULTURE OF WAR IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA, 1775-1783 by Trenton Cole Jones A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2014 © 2014 Trenton Cole Jones All Rights Reserved Abstract Deprived of Their Liberty explores Americans' changing conceptions of legitimate wartime violence by analyzing how the revolutionaries treated their captured enemies, and by asking what their treatment can tell us about the American Revolution more broadly. I suggest that at the commencement of conflict, the revolutionary leadership sought to contain the violence of war according to the prevailing customs of warfare in Europe. These rules of war—or to phrase it differently, the cultural norms of war— emphasized restricting the violence of war to the battlefield and treating enemy prisoners humanely. Only six years later, however, captured British soldiers and seamen, as well as civilian loyalists, languished on board noisome prison ships in Massachusetts and New York, in the lead mines of Connecticut, the jails of Pennsylvania, and the camps of Virginia and Maryland, where they were deprived of their liberty and often their lives by the very government purporting to defend those inalienable rights. My dissertation explores this curious, and heretofore largely unrecognized, transformation in the revolutionaries' conduct of war by looking at the experience of captivity in American hands. Throughout the dissertation, I suggest three principal factors to account for the escalation of violence during the war. From the onset of hostilities, the revolutionaries encountered an obstinate enemy that denied them the status of legitimate combatants, labeling them as rebels and traitors. -

Susannah Kearny, was born at Newark, New Jersey, August 30, 1794. He lived in New Jersey until he matricu lated in Columbia University in 1809. While here the na tional crisis of 1812 brought his natural aptitudes to the forefront. When a call· for volunteers was made for the War of 1812, Kearny enlisted, even though he was only a few weeks away from a Bachelor of Arts degree. In the early part of the war he was captured at the battle of Queenstown. But an exchange of prisoners soon brought him to Boston. Later, for gallantry at Queenstown, he received a captaincy on April 1, 1813. After the Treaty of Ghent the army staff was cut' as much as possible. -

Fungi Introduction Part 3.1 of this chapter describes landscape-scale vegetation patterns. Part 3.2 describes the vegetative structure, function, and composition of old forest ecosystems, while Part 3.3 describes hardwood ecosystems and Part 3.4 describes aquatic, riparian, and meadow ecosystems. This part focuses on botanical diversity in the Sierra Nevada, beginning with an overview of botanical resources and then presenting a more detailed analysis of the rarest elements of the flora, the threatened, endangered, and sensitive (TES) plants. The bryophytes (mosses and liverworts), lichens, and fungi of the Sierra have been little studied in comparison to the vascular flora. In the Pacific Northwest, studies of these groups have received increased attention due to the President’s Northwest Forest Plan. New and valuable scientific data is being revealed, some of which may apply to species in the Sierra Nevada. This section presents an overview of the vascular plant flora, followed by summaries of what is generally known about bryophytes, lichens, and fungi in the Sierra Nevada. Environmental Consequences of the alternatives are only analyzed for the Threatened, Endangered, and Sensitive plants, which include vascular plants, several bryophytes, and one species of lichen. 4.6.1. Vascular plants4.6.1. plants The diversity of topography, geology, and elevation in the Sierra Nevada combine to create a remarkably diverse flora (see Section 3.1 for an overview of landscape patterns and vegetation dynamics in the Sierra Nevada). More than half of the approximately 5,000 native vascular plant species in California occur in the Sierra Nevada, despite the fact that the range contains less than 20 percent of the state’s land base (Shevock 1996). -

Summer 2020 Newsletter of The Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation From the Executive Director Welcome to the first edition of Beacon, the official newsletter of The Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation. On behalf of everyone involved with our organization, I hope that you, and those who you care about, are healthy and safe. This foundation began in 2013 when the First African Methodist Church of Los Angeles (FAME) and other community friends�recognized the serious lack of a broad range of services for foster youth exiting the foster care system in Los Angeles. The initiative began by creating and hosting events specifically designed for foster youth and has grown to offering�scholarships�to further education. We started with collaborative partnerships with the Los Angeles Department of Children & Family Services and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and we are a founding Board of Directors member of the 3FN Faith Foster Families Network. Over our seven years, our list of partners has grown to include schools, colleges and other agencies that provide Chairman and support to foster youth. President of the Board Rev. J. UNSUNG HEROES AND HEROINES Spanning the period from the Gold Rush to the post-9/11 era, the exhibition tells the hidden stories of unsung heroes and heroines throughout California who stood up for their rights in the face of social hostility, physical violence, economic hardship, and political stonewalling. Stories of personal struggle demonstrate the ongoing fight and provide a framework through which current controversies can be debated. The central themes of the exhibition are: • Civil liberties are essential for democracy. • Civil liberties struggles repeat over time while targeted groups change. • Civil liberties are perpetually in flux. Each generation must fight to preserve them. • Although our constitution enumerates rights, it is the people who must fight for equality and justice to make them meaningful. A HISTORY O F CIVIL LIBERTIES OUR SHARED CIVIL LIBERTIES IN CALIFORNIA Using personal stories and building on the exhibition themes, civil liberties can relate to a range of museum goers, library patrons, and students, elementary through college, as well as docents who may share this content with visitors. We hope this exhibition will spark personal connections to civil rights and that visitors will leave the exhibit with a wider perspective about our shared civil liberties. RESOURCE GUIDE This guide seeks to provide visitors and students opportunities to investigate and research areas of their own personal interest and the evolving nature of democracy. This resource guide was developed to enhance The Resource Guide is divided into sections by exhibition topic and lists a variety of interpretation of California’s civil liberties’ history resources addressing past civil liberties fights and current issues.
