FEATURED HERO Colten Moore has been hunting literally almost all his life, accompanying his father on hunts since he was 2 years old. At ages 3 and 4 he had already spent nights with his father hunting wild hogs from a box blind. Colten bagged his first white-tailed deer when he was only 7. Using his mom’s .243-caliber rifle (which he had never shot), with the butt positioned above his shoulder and braced by his father, he dropped the buck from 140 yards away. “Wow — you got him,” his astonished father said. “I know, “ he replied proudly. The following season he demonstrated a developing hunting sensibility both by announcing that he wanted to take a bigger buck and by passing on a dawn low- light shot. His patience and maturity were rewarded later in the day when he took two deer — one from 170 yards away. The next season, Colten, then 9 years old, took the long-tined eight-pointer pictured after passing on a less-mature spike.
