MATH-UA 264.001 – CHAOS AND DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS Spring 2021 Lectures: Monday, Wednesday, 11:00–12:15PM ET Recitation: Friday, 12:30–1:45PM ET Objectives Dynamical systems theory is the branch of mathematics that studies the properties of iterated action of maps on spaces. It provides a mathematical framework to characterize a great variety of time-evolving phenomena in areas such as physics, ecology, and finance, among many other disciplines. In this class we will study dynamical systems that evolve in discrete time, as well as continuous-time dynamical systems described by ordinary di↵erential equations. Of particular focus will be to explore and understand the qualitative properties of dynamics, such as the existence of attractors, periodic orbits and chaos. We will do this by means of mathematical analysis, as well as simple numerical experiments. Our motivation is policy analysis with panel data, particularly through the use of “synthetic control” methods. Wavelet Entropy Energy Measure (WEEM): A multiscale measure to grade a geophysical system's predictability Ravi Kumar Guntu and Ankit Agarwal Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Hydrology, Roorkee, India ([email protected]) Model-free gradation of predictability of a geophysical system is essential to quantify how much inherent information is contained within the system and evaluate different forecasting methods' performance to get the best possible prediction. We conjecture that Multiscale Information enclosed in a given geophysical time series is the only input source for any forecast model. In the literature, established entropic measures dealing with grading the predictability of a time series at multiple time scales are limited. Therefore, we need an additional measure to quantify the information at multiple time scales, thereby grading the predictability level. This study introduces a novel measure, Wavelet Entropy Energy Measure (WEEM), based on Wavelet entropy to investigate a time series's energy distribution. From the WEEM analysis, predictability can be graded low to high. The difference between the entropy of a wavelet energy distribution of a time series and entropy of wavelet energy of white noise is the basis for gradation. The metric quantifies the proportion of the deterministic component of a time series in terms of energy concentration, and its range varies from zero to one. One corresponds to high predictable due to its high energy concentration and zero representing a process similar to the white noise process having scattered energy distribution. -

This is an example from classical physics which nevertheless demonstrates some of the essential features of coupled degrees of freedom in quantum mechanical problems and a general approach for removing such coupling. An S-Matrix for Massless Particles Holmfridur Hannesdottir and Matthew D. Schwartz Department of Physics, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Abstract The traditional S-matrix does not exist for theories with massless particles, such as quantum electrodynamics. The difficulty in isolating asymptotic states manifests itself as infrared divergences at each order in perturbation theory. Building on insights from the literature on coherent states and factorization, we construct an S-matrix that is free of singularities order-by-order in perturbation theory. Factorization guarantees that the asymptotic evolution in gauge theories is universal, i.e. independent of the hard process. Although the hard S-matrix element is computed between well-defined few particle Fock states, dressed/coherent states can be seen to form as intermediate states in the calculation of hard S-matrix elements. We present a framework for the perturbative calculation of hard S-matrix elements combining Lorentz-covariant Feyn- man rules for the dressed-state scattering with time-ordered perturbation theory for the asymptotic evolution. With hard cutoffs on the asymptotic Hamiltonian, the cancella- tion of divergences can be seen explicitly. In dimensional regularization, where the hard cutoffs are replaced by a renormalization scale, the contribution from the asymptotic evolution produces scaleless integrals that vanish. A Gentle Introduction to Dynamical Systems Theory for Researchers in Speech, Language, and Music. Talk given at PoRT workshop, Glasgow, July 2012 Fred Cummins, University College Dublin [1] Dynamical Systems Theory (DST) is the lingua franca of Physics (both Newtonian and modern), Biology, Chemistry, and many other sciences and non-sciences, such as Economics. To employ the tools of DST is to take an explanatory stance with respect to observed phenomena. DST is thus not just another tool in the box. Its use is a different way of doing science. DST is increasingly used in non-computational, non-representational, non-cognitivist approaches to understanding behavior (and perhaps brains). (Embodied, embedded, ecological, enactive theories within cognitive science.) [2] DST originates in the science of mechanics, developed by the (co-)inventor of the calculus: Isaac Newton. This revolutionary science gave us the seductive concept of the mechanism. Mechanics seeks to provide a deterministic account of the relation between the motions of massive bodies and the forces that act upon them. A dynamical system comprises • A state description that indexes the components at time t, and • A dynamic, which is a rule governing state change over time The choice of variables defines the state space. The dynamic associates an instantaneous rate of change with each point in the state space. Any specific instance of a dynamical system will trace out a single trajectory in state space. (This is often, misleadingly, called a solution to the underlying equations.) Description of a specific system therefore also requires specification of the initial conditions. In the domain of mechanics, where we seek to account for the motion of massive bodies, we know which variables to choose (position and velocity). -

A PRIMER ON SUBSTITUTION TILINGS OF THE EUCLIDEAN PLANE NATALIE PRIEBE FRANK Abstract. This paper is intended to provide an introduction to the theory of substitution tilings. For our purposes, tiling substitution rules are divided into two broad classes: geometric and combi- natorial. Geometric substitution tilings include self-similar tilings such as the well-known Penrose tilings; for this class there is a substantial body of research in the literature. Combinatorial sub- stitutions are just beginning to be examined, and some of what we present here is new. We give numerous examples, mention selected major results, discuss connections between the two classes of substitutions, include current research perspectives and questions, and provide an extensive bib- liography. Although the author attempts to fairly represent the as a whole, the paper is not an exhaustive survey, and she apologizes for any important omissions. 1. Introduction d A tiling substitution rule is a rule that can be used to construct infinite tilings of R using a finite number of tile types. The rule tells us how to \substitute" each tile type by a finite configuration of tiles in a way that can be repeated, growing ever larger pieces of tiling at each stage. In the d limit, an infinite tiling of R is obtained. In this paper we take the perspective that there are two major classes of tiling substitution rules: those based on a linear expansion map and those relying instead upon a sort of \concatenation" of tiles. The first class, which we call geometric tiling substitutions, includes self-similar tilings, of which there are several well-known examples including the Penrose tilings. -

For example, X could be the unit interval [0; 1], a circle, a torus, or something far more complicated like a Cantor set. Let T : X ! X be a function that maps X into itself. Let x 2 X be a point. We can repeatedly apply the map T to the point x to obtain the sequence: fx; T (x);T (T (x));T (T (T (x))); : : : ; :::g: We will often write T n(x) = T (··· (T (T (x)))) (n times). The sequence of points x; T (x);T 2(x);::: is called the orbit of x. We think of applying the map T as the passage of time. Thus we think of T (x) as where the point x has moved to after time 1, T 2(x) is where the point x has moved to after time 2, etc. Some points x 2 X return to where they started. That is, T n(x) = x for some n > 1. We say that such a point x is periodic with period n. By way of contrast, points may move move densely around the space X. (A sequence is said to be dense if (loosely speaking) it comes arbitrarily close to every point of X.) If we take two points x; y of X that start very close then their orbits will initially be close. However, it often happens that in the long term their orbits move apart and indeed become dramatically different.
