Cause Papers Project Standardization
1 Cause Papers in the Diocesan Courts of the Archbishopric of York, 1300–1858 Editing and Standardisation in the Cause Papers Database The Cause Papers project provided an on-line searchable catalogue of more than 13,000 cause papers relating to cases heard between 1300 and 1858 in the Church Courts of the diocese of York, the original records for which are held at the Borthwick Institute for Archives at the University of York. The project aimed to pioneer a new standard of excellence in data accuracy and standardization. Cataloguing such a large and varied number of records posed numerous challenges in these areas, including the problem of how to incorporate spelling and language variations of surname and place names. The following document provides information on the methods used by the project team in compiling, editing and standardizing the data. It is split into the following sections:- 1) Information provided by the database 2) List of standard reference works used by the project team 3) List of types and sub-types of cases commonly used in the database 4) Standardization of Forenames 5) Standardization of Surnames – Part A 6) Standardization of Surnames – Part B 7) Problematic Place-names – Identification and Standardization Please note that this text is not intended as a guide to on-line catalogue. Users requiring assistance with searching the catalogue should consult the on-screen help text. 2 Editing and standardisation for the Cause Paper Database 1) Information provided by the database Owing to the volume and complexity of manuscript material involved, it was not possible to provide full transcriptions of the cause papers. -

Rye, Eleanor (2016) Dialect in the Viking-Age Scandinavian Diaspora
1 Dialect in the Viking-Age Scandinavian Diaspora: The Evidence of Medieval Minor Names ELEANOR RYE MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy SEPTEMBER 2015 2 3 Abstract This thesis investigates the Scandinavian contribution to medieval microtoponymic vocabulary in two areas of northwest England, Wirral, part of the historic county of Cheshire in the north-west Midlands, and an area of the county of Cumbria, the West Ward of Westmorland Barony. It is shown that there was far greater Scandinavian linguistic influence on the medieval microtoponymy of the West Ward than on the medieval microtoponymy of Wirral. This thesis also assesses what conclusions can be drawn from the use of Scandinavian-derived place-name elements in microtoponyms. Scandinavian influence on microtoponymy has previously been interpreted, at one extreme, as evidence for Scandinavian settlement, and, at the other extreme, only as reflecting widespread Scandinavian influence on the English language and English naming practices. The relationship between Scandinavian settlement and Scandinavian influence on naming micropotonymy is explored by considering the microtoponymic evidence in the light of evidence illuminating the circumstances of Scandinavian settlement in the case-study areas, and by considering the evidence from the case-study areas within the wider context of Scandinavian influence on English naming practices. The substantial Scandinavian substantial influence on major place-names in both areas confirms that Scandinavian had been spoken in Wirral and the West Ward. However, the Scandinavian contribution to toponymic vocabulary as recorded in the late-medieval period was very different in the two areas, hinting at the indirectness of the link between Scandinavian settlement and influence on later microtoponymy. -

Dragomans and Crusaders: the Role of Translators and Translation in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean, 1098-1291
Dragomans and Crusaders: The Role of Translators and Translation in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean, 1098-1291 By William Stephen Murrell, Jr. Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Vanderbilt University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in History June 30, 2018 Nashville, Tennessee Approved: David J. Wasserstein, Ph.D Leor Halevi, Ph.D William Caferro, Ph.D Richard McGregor, Ph.D To Rachel ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many people and institutions have contributed to this project. First, I would like to thank the Vanderbilt History Department for its generous support for conference and research travel and summer language study. Additionally, my first year of writing was supported by a fellowship from the Andrew W. Mellon Sawyer Seminar at the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities. Thank you to Tony, Samira, and David for organizing the seminar and for inviting me to participate. The fellowship also funded research at the Heberden Coin Room at the Ashmolean. My thanks to Julian Baker for your guidance and patience as I played the numismatist for a few days. I would like to thank Jim Toplon and the entire staff at the Vanderbilt library for tracking down obscure medieval texts and defunct European numismatic journals. In that vein, I would also like to thank Samu Niskanen for double-checking St. Catherine’s College MS 3 for a few crucial terms and saving me another trip across the Atlantic. Though I have worked mostly outside of the crusade studies guild, several giants in the field have helped me along the way.
