The purpose of the SKS is to encourage study and discussion of the thought of Søren Kierkegaard in all its dimensions and ramifications, including its sources and influences. Affiliated with both the AAR and the APA, the Society alternates its annual business meeting between AAR and APA conventions. The Society encourages scholarship on Kierkegaard at the national and regional meetings of the AAR and APA through an Executive Committee which includes members of both organizations. For more information see http://libnt.4.lib.tcu.edu.staff.bellinger.SK_Society.htm. Søren Kierkegaard Society (U.S.A.) and the APA The Society currently plans to hold sessions at 2 out of 3 APA meetings each academic year. During the 07-08 academic year, the Society will run sessions at the Eastern APA in Washington, D.C. and the Pacific APA in San Francisco. During the ’07 and ’08 academic year, sessions will run concurrently with the Eastern APA and the Central APA. This rotation should continue every other year. For further information on deadlines for paper submissions etc. please use the following website posted by John Davenport. www.fordham.edu/philosophy/department/skconferences.htm. 4 Søren Kierkegaard Society Dinner and Presentation – submitted by Andrew Burgess AAR Kierkegaard, Religion, and Culture Group – San Diego, November 16-21, 2007 This year the AAR convention had three Kierkegaard sessions, the first two on Saturday-one a panel about Kierkegaard in dialogue with non-Christian religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Chinese religions, Japanese religions, Judaism, and Islam), and the other about resources in Kierkegaard's works for approaching the issue of religious pluralism (drawing on such concepts as the universally religious, absolute difference, mysticism, suffering, and revelation). Then on Saturday the Kierkegaard, Religion, and Culture Group co-sponsored together with the AAR Schleiermacher Group a short session on the relationship between Kierkegaard and Schleiermacher, drawing upon the recent work by Richard Crouter (Carleton College). The information in the AAR Program Book about the first Saturday session is incomplete. You can access the complete, updated schedule on our web site with the AAR, if you are a current member of the AAR, at (http://www.aarweb.org/Meetings/Annual_Meeting/Program_Units/PUCS/Website/main.asp?PUNum=AARP U033), or, whether or not you hold a membership in the AAR, you can access a fuller description of the events than that at the KRC's own site (http://home.uchicago.edu/~ddp/aarkrc.html). • Hans Christian Andersen Between a Culture of Meaning and a Culture of Presence
Hans Christian Andersen between a culture of meaning and a culture of presence Mogens Davidsen, Associate Professor, University of Southern Denmark Abstract The article opens with questioning what kind of “community” Hans Christian Andersen as an artist can be said to have been a part of, considering that the community of Andersen’s upbringing was radically different from the one he was socialized into through his literary career. With the point of departure in Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s distinction between literature displaying “presence in language” and “presence achieved against language”, the article suggests that part of Andersen’s work (with Søren Kierkegaard’s critique of the novel Only a Fiddler in focus) can be seen as examples of presence achieved against language. With the two presence categories which Gumbrecht typologically distinguishes as a “presence culture” and a “meaning culture” in mind, the presence categories are ascribed to an oral culture of Andersen’s social background, and the elitist intellectual culture of the Danish Golden Age. Inspired by Kierkegaard’s characterization of Andersen’s novel in musical terms, the article further presents a possible understanding of presence, the implications of which reaches far beyond the harmonic paradigm of the Golden Age and into the musical modernism of Arnold Schönberg in the twentieth century. Introduction What kind of community can Hans Christian Andersen rightly be said to have been a part of, if such a community also has to be detectible in his work as formal or thematic aspects of his literature? This is not an altogether easy question to answer, taken into consideration that Andersen came from the very poorest part of society and was socialized into the cultural and artistic norms of the elitist circles of the Danish Golden Age of the late absolute monarchy.

Andersen and the Heibergs1 by Colin Roth t must have been exciting for the ballet historian, Knud Arne Jür Igensen, to discover a Bournonville manuscript in the Royal Library’s collection which opens with what is clearly a reference to Søren Kier ke gaard.2 Though not mentioned by name, Kierkegaard is readily identifiable because his Master’s degree dissertation on ‘The Concept of Irony’ is explicitly referred to in the first sentence. It was right that the discovery was quickly shared with researchers at the Søren Kierke gaard Research Centre at Copenhagen’s University. This article is a study of the document, its context and especially of the references con cealed within it. A complete transcription of the Danish original and a new English translation appear as appendices, one of which should, ideally, be read first.

  • KIERKEGAARD's APOPHATIC THEOLOGY by Peter Kline
PASSION FOR NOTHING: KIERKEGAARD’S APOPHATIC THEOLOGY By Peter Kline Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Vanderbilt University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in Religion May, 2016 Nashville, Tennessee Approved: Professor William Franke Professor Ellen Armour Professor Laurel Schneider Professor David Wood ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Writing this dissertation has been, if not an act of faith, then certainly some kind of leap or abandon. It is not a little astonishing to me to that I have finished it. There has been the struggle to work through a complex subject matter, of course. But more than anything, there has been the struggle to find my voice, to feel out what kind of theological, philosophical, and spiritual music I am capable of and to wonder, often anxiously, whether it is worth playing. There are those in the academy who would have the dissertation be simply functional, one last requirement on the way to the desired goal, The Degree (followed by The Job and The Career). I have never been able to approach my writing in such a teleological fashion. I seem to be unable to approach writing otherwise than as a practice of what Foucault called “the care of the self.” Learning and putting into practice such self-care in this dissertation has been a difficult pleasure. Thankfully, Kierkegaard was an unfailing companion and guide in this task even as he was my subject matter. There are many along the way who supported me with care and made this dissertation possible. I’d like to name a few of them here.

Copenhagen: Museum Tusculanum Press, 2013. 196 pp. Reviewed by Nate Kramer Katalin Nun begins her book Women of the Danish Golden Age: Literature, Theater and the Emancipation of Women with the obligatory remarks about the signifi cance of the Danish Golden Age, but moves quickly to her main thesis: that the women who were also a part of that golden age have been overlooked, forgott en, or rendered impor- tant only because of the towering fi gures (men, of course!) of the pe- riod. Thus, Nun begins to carve out a space in which to address the authorships of Thomasine Gyllembourg and Mathilde Fibiger and the acting of Johanne Luise Heiberg, all three infl uential and important fi gures in their own right.
