I år valde jag att fokusera på Hans Christian Andersens mottagande i Danmark under hans livstid. Ämnet var utmanande men också intressant och lärorikt. Inledning 1. Syfte och frågeställning Författaren Hans Christian Andersen (2 april 1805 – 4 augusti 1875) föddes i Odense, Danmark, som en fattig pojke men mot slutet av sitt liv var han och hans litterära verk känd i nästan hela Europa och i en del av Förenta staterna. Hur han etablerade sig i den litterära världen var en lång och komplicerad process som jag kommer att analysera. I dag känner vi Andersen framför allt för hans sagor men han skrev också många dikter, pjäser, reseskildringar, självbiografier och romaner. Det var Hans Christian Ørsted (1777-1851), fysiker och kemist men också en fadersfigur för den berömda författaren, som sammanfattade Andersens litterära karriär på ett bra sätt. Jag citerar ur ett brev från mars 1835 där Andersen redogör för sin väninna, Henriette Wulff, hur Ørsted upphöjde hans verk. Enligt Jens Andersens biografi, Andersen: en biografi (2003), hade den danska författaren vid denna tidpunkt precis publicerat sin roman Improvisatoren och hans första sagosamling var på gång.1 Hans Christian Andersen berättar: ”Dernæst skrevet nogle Eventyr for Børn, om hvilke Ørsted siger, at naar Improvisatoren gjør mig berømt, gjør Eventyrene mig udødelig.”2 Ørsteds förutsägelse gick i uppfyllelse: romanen gjorde Andersen berömd men hans sagor gjorde honom odödlig. Men så fort och direkt som Andersen här framställer det gick det ändå inte. Olika danska kritiker och författare bedömde Andersens verk negativa och det tog tid innan han etablerade sig som vedertagen författare i Danmark. Uppsatsens syfte är därför att analysera Andersens mottagande och etablering i den danska litterära världen från 1830 till 1870 med särskilt hänsyn till de danska kritikerna som bedömde hans verk. Med andra ord kommer jag att fokusera på olika viktiga recensioner och personer som bidrog till Andersens mottagande och framgång. Andersens mottagande som författare har varit ett populärt forskningsämne fram till i dag. Först och främst vill jag framhäva vikten av de många biografierna som skrevs över Andersens liv eftersom de är oumbärliga i forskningen om Andersens mottagande i den litterära världen. En av de första biografiförfattare som skrev om Andersen var Helge Topsøe-Jensen. Denna viktiga Andersenforskare publicerade bland annat Mit eget Eventyr uden Digtning. En Studie over H. C. Chapter 2, “Disability,” theorizes that Kierkegaard later spurned Byron as a hedonistic “cripple” because of the metonymy between him and his (i.e., Kierkegaard’s) enemy Peder Ludvig Møller. Møller was an editor at The Corsair, the disreputable satirical newspaper that mocked Kierkegaard’s disability in a series of caricatures.     Hans Christian Andersen between a culture of meaning and a culture of presence Mogens Davidsen, Associate Professor, University of Southern Denmark Abstract The article opens with questioning what kind of “community” Hans Christian Andersen as an artist can be said to have been a part of, considering that the community of Andersen’s upbringing was radically different from the one he was socialized into through his literary career. With the point of departure in Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht’s distinction between literature displaying “presence in language” and “presence achieved against language”, the article suggests that part of Andersen’s work (with Søren Kierkegaard’s critique of the novel Only a Fiddler in focus) can be seen as examples of presence achieved against language. With the two presence categories which Gumbrecht typologically distinguishes as a “presence culture” and a “meaning culture” in mind, the presence categories are ascribed to an oral culture of Andersen’s social background, and the elitist intellectual culture of the Danish Golden Age. Inspired by Kierkegaard’s characterization of Andersen’s novel in musical terms, the article further presents a possible understanding of presence, the implications of which reaches far beyond the harmonic paradigm of the Golden Age and into the musical modernism of Arnold Schönberg in the twentieth century. Introduction What kind of community can Hans Christian Andersen rightly be said to have been a part of, if such a community also has to be detectible in his work as formal or thematic aspects of his literature? This is not an altogether easy question to answer, taken into consideration that Andersen came from the very poorest part of society and was socialized into the cultural and artistic norms of the elitist circles of the Danish Golden Age of the late absolute monarchy.

Thus, Nun begins to carve out a space in which to address the authorships of Thomasine Gyllembourg and Mathilde Fibiger and the acting of Johanne Luise Heiberg, all three infl uential and important fi gures in their own right.

    Hans Christian Andersen and his Social Reception in Austria Sven Hakon Rossel Professor, University of Vienna Abstract This article documents Hans Christian Andersen’s gradual development from being a young unknown Danish writer to becoming socially accepted and acknowledged as an integral part of Austrian social and artistic life. The point of departure is his second novel Kun en Spillemand (Andersen, 1837/1988; Only a Fiddler) of which two chapters are set in Vienna. This process of so-called acculturation, i.e. the appropriation of various social, psychological and cultural elements of the country visited, begins with Andersen’s first stay in Austria in 1834 – the first of altogether six visits – and finds its climax in 1846, when he is invited to give a reading of his fairy tales at the imperial castle in Vienna. It is noteworthy that this process to a large degree was the result of a planned strategy on Andersen’s behalf. Before arriving in Vienna, he procured letters of recommendation and upon arrival he systematically made friends with the city’s most important artistic and intellectual personalities. Another strategic move, of course, was to choose Vienna as a partial setting for his most successful novel in the German-speaking world. Introduction: Only a Fiddler In Hans Christian Andersen’s second novel, Kun en Spillemand (Andersen, 1837/1988; Only a Fiddler), a Bildungsroman like his other five novels, one of the characters, a Danish physician living in the Austrian capital Vienna, compares Austria with Denmark and arrives at this conclusion: The inhabitants of Vienna possess so much, both that which is good and that which is petty- minded, they have this in common with the inhabitants of Copenhagen, the difference being that the Viennese possess more liveliness.
