No matter the tigh schedule he has allowed me to sit by his side (literally) reviewing a script at the computer, calculating the probaility of plasmid recircularization or deriving a statistical formula at the white board but also helping me to prepare and electroporate a bacterial library in what seemed a contraction of space-time. I want to thank the community of the CRG, always ready to discuss science and life in the corridors, the data seminars, symposiums, the beer sessions or following a mail asking for advice or materials. The number of translational scientific discoveries and technological innovations derived from the center’s research labs over the course of the past three decades has been remarkable. Equally remarkable have been the number of scientific awards and honors, including Nobel prizes, received by Beckman faculty and the number of young scientists mentored by Beckman faculty who have gone on to prominent positions in academia, bio-technology and related fields. This year we include several featured articles on these accomplishments. I would like to thank the Nobel Assembly of the Karolinska Institutet for the opportunity to describe some recent work on RNA-triggered gene silencing. First a few disclaimers, however. Telling the full story of gene silencing would be a mammoth enterprise that would take me many years to write and would take you well into the night to read. So we’ll need to abbreviate the story more than a little. Second (and as you will see) we are only in the dawn of our knowledge; so consider the following to be primer... the best we could do as of December 8th, 2006. And third, please understand that the story that I am telling represents the work of several generations of biologists, chemists, and many shades in between. I’m pleased and proud that work from my labo- ratory has contributed to the field, and that this has led to my being chosen as one of the messengers to relay the story in this forum. At the same time, I hope that there will be no confusion of equating our modest contributions with those of the much grander RNAi enterprise. Awarded the 2014 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine
PRESS RELEASE Geneva, January 21, 2014 2014 LOUIS-JEANTET PRIZE FOR MEDICINE The 2014 LOUIS-JEANTET PRIZE FOR MEDICINE is awarded to the Italian biochemist Elena Conti, Director of the Department of Structural Cell Biology at the Max-Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich (Germany) and to Denis Le Bihan, the French medical doctor, physicist and Director of NeuroSpin, an institute at the French Nuclear and Renewable Energy Commission (CEA) at Saclay near Paris. The LOUIS-JEANTET FOUNDATION grants the sum of CHF 700'000 for each of the two 2014 prizes, of which CHF 625'000 is for the continuation of the prize-winner's work and CHF 75’000 for their personal use. THE PRIZE-WINNERS are conducting fundamental biological research which is expected to be of considerable significance for medicine. ELENA CONTI is awarded the 2014 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine for her important contributions to understanding the mechanisms governing ribonucleic acid (RNA) quality, transport and degradation. In order to function properly, our cells need to degrade macromolecules that are faulty or no longer needed. The biochemist deciphered at the level of atomic resolution how faulty RNAs are recognized and eliminated. Notably, her group deciphered the three-dimensional architecture and molecular mechanisms of the exosome, a multiprotein complex that recognizes and degrades RNAs. The work revealed that several principles of the mechanism of this essential nano-machine are conserved in different forms of life. Elena Conti will use the prize money to conduct further research into the structure and regulation of the exosome. DENIS LE BIHAN is awarded the 2014 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine for the development of a new imaging method that has revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of strokes. -

But not all sugars are bad for you. Consider fucose, an essential sugar the body needs. Without it, neurons can’t communicate, kidneys can’t filter blood, and skin can’t stay hydrated. Chemical biologist Carolyn • Bertozzi and her group are trying to learn more about the role of fucose in www.hhmi.org development. To do this, they injected modified versions of fucose into live, single-celled zebrafish embryos. As the embryos developed, the altered fucose molecules were incorporated into the sugars that coat cell surfaces. Using a simple chemical reaction, the team attached a labeled probe molecule to the altered fucose so they could visualize its location in the developing embryo. In this image of a 19-hour-old zebrafish embryo, labeled fucose (red) glows in the peripheral cells. Just one of many ways chemistry is helping answer biological questions (see “Living Chemistry,” page 12).
