Writers have frequently taken up their pens to preserve a record of human cruelty and endurance. In this course we will study works of literature from (or about) some dozen countries that range chronologically from the first half of the twentieth century to the present time. The first four units are organized geographically by continent and consider themes common to the grouping. The final two units bridge geographical regions. Most of the issues under discussion (colonialism, racism, genocide, regimes of terror, environmentalism, native rights) require some knowledge of historical and political context: a weekly lecture or film will provide such a background for the reading. We will approach the texts, however, with the tools of literary analysis. In a broader sense, this means an exploration of how memoirs, poetry, short stories, plays, and novels written by victims of- and witnesses to-some of the twentieth century's most repressive political systems facilitate survival, disseminate information, and insist upon remembrance. In terms of reading, this means that we will pay attention to a writer's narrative strategies, to the texture of language, and to the use of imagery and symbolism. In other words, how does each writer use language, and why? One goal of the course is to improve each individual's skills as a reader, thinker, and writer about literature.

    Jonathan Demme Has Died At 73; Director Extraordinaire Won Oscar For ‘Silence Of The Lambs’ Associated Press Jonathan Demme, the Oscar winning director, producer and screenwriter and screenwriter, has died at age 73. I am still trying to get the cause of death and will build on the post today. This is a terribly sad day for Hollywood and especially New York, where Demme lived and where his production banner Clinica Estetico was for so long a catalyst for many memorable films. His death comes as an episode he directed of the new series Shots Fired airs this evening. I’ve learned the cause of death was complications from esophagus cancer. Demme and his wife Joanne Howard have three children — the youngest is Jos, with Brooklyn in the middle and Ramona the oldest, who’s married to James Molloy. They were all with Demme when he died this morning at 3:30 AM in his Manhattan apartment. The family will organize a private family funeral with a memorial possible, but the family is dealing with so much right now, those details will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Jonathan’s cherished charity Americans For Immigrant Justice, which is based in Miami. Born in Baldwin, Long Island, Demme has had one of the great filmmaking careers of his era, rising to prominence in the 1980s with his comedy films Melvin and Howard (1980), Swing Shift (1984), Something Wild (1986) and Married to the Mob (1988). He won his Oscar for directing The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and later helmed the acclaimed films Philadelphia (1993) and Rachel Getting Married (2008), along with many seminal documentaries such as the Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense, and Neil Young: Heart of Gold.

Murfin 2017 All Rights Reserved 3 ABSTRACT This dissertation narrates the circulation and institutionalization of an emergent category of talk performance within the late-twentieth century US avant-garde through the career trajectories of three artists from disparate disciplinary backgrounds working in and around the 1970s: theatrical monologist Spalding Gray, poet David Antin, and dance artist and filmmaker Yvonne Rainer. All established themselves through more obviously discipline-coherent work before turning to extemporaneous talk as a performance strategy within the shifting critical and cultural environments of post-1960s avant-gardes. Undertaking a comparative study collecting these practices under the label talk performance, this project uncovers the processes by which these artists both resisted and relied upon disciplinary structures, and the media technologies and formats that attend those structures, to configure their work within particular arts discourses. Talk performance becomes a provocative site for understanding how minimalist interventions into formal disciplinary categories helped define the reapportionment of the overall art situation in the aftermath of the 1960s along lines of rhetorical and institutional distinction that still persist. Employing newly available multimedia archives and a historiographic approach to the various narrow disciplinary accounts of the late-twentieth-century American avant-garde that have become standard, this project recuperates traces of an unacknowledged, interdisciplinary set of talk performance practices.
