Many of these Republican-leaning Catholics are displaying a more outspoken, culture-war oriented form of Catholicism that has been dubbed Evangelical Catholicism. Through their forceful disciplining of pro-choice Catholics and treatment of abortion in their quadrennial voting guides, as well as their emphasis on “religious liberty”, the U.S. bishops have played a major role in the rise of these Evangelical Catholics. Keywords: U.S. Catholic bishops; abortion; Republican; Democratic; voting 1. Introduction While the Catholic Church is associated with opposition to legalized abortion, a review of the historical record shows that the anti-abortion movement was largely fomented by the Catholic hierarchy and fueled by grassroots Evangelical opposition to abortion [1]. Lay Catholics have largely tracked general public opinion on abortion, with just over half of white Catholics saying it should be legal; polls have consistently found that only about 13% of Catholics support the position of the Catholic Church that abortion should be illegal in all circumstances [2,3]. As a result, Catholic voters have been comfortable supporting candidates who favor abortion rights, adding to their reputation as swing voters who have backed both successful Republican and Democratic presidential candidates. However, a substantial subset of white Catholic voters now appears more firmly committed to the Republican Party. -

I. The Bishop as Pastor and as Theologian I am sure that you are well aware of the controversy in the United States as to whether politicians who profess to be Catholic, yet support abortion as a reproductive right of women, should be refused Holy Communion. Let's leave aside the question of refusal of Holy Communion and ask about the actions of the politicians in question. It would seem to me that these politicians who disagree fundamentally and publicly with the clear and traditional teaching of the Church on so important a matter put themselves outside the community of the faithful. The claim to be Catholic and a supporter of abortion is a contradiction in terms. This is true of all those who claim to belong to the community of faith, whether they be bishops, laypeople, persons in public life or private citizeRs. -

Peters N HIS REVIEW OF GEORGE WEIGEL’S Evangelical Catholicism for Commonweal in April 2013, William Portier declared: It is time to admit that the “Americanist” tradition…inherited from I [John Courtney] Murray…is dead. If there was ever a harmonious fit between America and the Catholic natural–law tradition, there certainly isn’t now. Catholics will not save America, as Murray dared to hope in 1960. Neither City on a Hill nor pagan cesspool, the United States is just our country.1 While there is much to Portier’s statement, his claim that the “Americanist tradition” is dead stands out. For if he is correct, we are at an important historical moment in U.S. Catholicism: the end of an almost two-hundred year old argument (dating back at least to Orestes Brownson) that America is good for Catholicism and that Catholics are good for—and can even save—America. This is the bold assertion that has formed the way generations of Catholics have engaged with U.S. society and culture. And the demise of this belief has left many Catholics lost in a very real “moral wilderness”—to borrow a phrase from MacIntyre—searching for a new way to understand America.2 In order to address this new found predicament for American Catholics, I have broken my article into three parts. First, I look at some of the more recent discussions surrounding the idea that the Americanist proposition is no longer viable. -

1 ISTITUTO PATRISTICO «AUGUSTINIANUM» Via Paolo VI, 25, 00193 ROMA October 9, 2010 CATHOLIC ORTHODOXY; ANTIDOTE AGAINST THE CULTURE OF DEATH By Archbishop Raymond Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura Introduction It is clear that we are presently experiencing a period of intense and critical struggle in the advancement of the culture of life in the world. Many governments and international organizations openly and aggressively follow a secularist, anti-life and anti-family agenda. Even though religious language may be used and the name of God invoked, programs and policies are proposed for the people without respect for God and His Law, in the words of the Venerable Pope John Paul II, "as if God did not exist" (Pope John Paul II, Post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Christifideles laici, "On the Vocation and the Mission of the Lay Faithful in the Church and in the World," 30 December 1988, no. 34). Now more than ever, the world needs the consistent witness to the truth, expressed in the Sacred Scriptures and in Tradition, which is the condition of the possibility of a culture which respects fully the gift of human life and its origin in procreation, that is, in the cooperation of man and woman with God through the conjugal union and through education in the home which they have formed by marriage. In his Encyclical Letter Caritas in veritate, "On Integral Human Development in Charity and Truth," given on June 29th of 2009, Pope Benedict XVI teaches us that the development for which God has created man is achieved through the establishment of the culture of life: "Hence charity and truth confront us with an altogether new and creative challenge, one that is certainly vast and complex. -

Landry Church of Our Savior, Manhattan October 16, 2003 25th Anniversary of JP II The Vision of Pope John Paul II 25 Years Contemplating Christ and Man (notes) Introduction • Context of so many focusing on the incredible array of things JP II has done in his 25 years (9131 days): • The great teacher of the Gentiles: He has written 14 encyclicals, 14 apostolic exhortations, 11 apostolic constitutions, 42 apostolic letters and 28 Motu proprio in addition to hundreds of other messages and letters. • The globe-trotting evangelist: 102 foreign trips; 143 trips within Italy, 301 parishes in Rome. Altogether Pope John Paul II has reached the 1,163,865 kilometer mark (698,310 miles), that is, just over 28 times the earth's circumference or 3 times the distance between the earth and moon. • 1,106 Wednesday general audiences • 1,324 Blesseds in 140 ceremonies and 477 Saints in 51 ceremonies • Done so much in foreign affairs, including big contributions to the fall of Communism, to the promotion of world peace • Perhaps more than any other pope in history, he has nourished the Church’s understanding of the Great News about Marriage, Family and Sexuality • Perhaps more than any other pope in history, certainly on a world scale, has a pope interacted and inspired so many young people • His commitment to interreligious dialogue has had no parallel. He was the first pope to visit the Synagogue of Rome. He has had an outreach even to Muslims. • Ecumenical affairs, with the Lutherans, with the Orthodox. • Push for human rights and religious freedom.
